Elements of Comedy Cheat Sheet

EA 1: Use what you learned about comedy to write an essay that
explains how an author creates humor for effect and uses it to
communicate a universal truth.
ELEMENTS OF COMEDY/HUMOR
(You’ll need to analyze the use of these):
Comic Characters/Caricatures: A pictoral, written, or acted
representation of a person that exaggerates traits for comic effect
Comic Situations: Characters in an unlikely situation or are victims of
circumstances with a comical reaction
Hyperbole: Extreme exaggeration used for emphasis and comic
effect
One Liners: single sentence joke
Puns: humorous use of a word that suggest another word with the
same sound or meaning
Universal Truth: a message conveyed via a humorous text that
teaches the audience a truth about life (you’ll mention this in your
intro and really explain it in your conclusion)
