Employee self-service (ESS) is a Web
based application available via the
Internet
◦ View gross to net pay detail
◦ View calendar year-to-date information and
print tax Form W-2 and W-2 Information
sheet
◦ View leave accrual and leave usage
◦ View/Update teacher licensure and training
◦ View/Update personnel information such as
address, phone number, e-mail address,
dependents and emergency contacts

The Employee Self Service (ESS) web
application is included in the SMART
Systems Software package utilized by over
300 Minnesota School Districts.
ESS is maintained on a secure website.
A direct link to the ESS website will be available
through your district’s Intranet website.

CHAPTER 292 – Mandatory Direct
Deposit of Payroll
This Act was effective August 1, 2004.
 This Act provides that, notwithstanding
contrary provision of law, the governing body
of a municipality, including a school district,
may require direct deposit for all of its
employees who are being paid by its payroll
system.


Practices


This provision was effective August 1, 2006.
The Act amends the law relating to required
statements of earnings by an employer and
provides that at the end of each pay period, an
employer shall provide each employee an
earnings statement, either in writing or by
electronic means, covering that pay period. An
employer who chooses to provide an earnings
statement by electronic means must provide
employee access to an employer-owned
computer during an employee’s regular working
hours to review and print earnings statements.

ESS Front Page: Announcements
 The first page you see is the Announcements page. This works
similar to e-mail only you cannot respond to it.
 This screen was programmed to replace the paper payroll
“stuffers”.
ESS Front Page: Announcements
 The subject line of the message you click on is highlighted in
yellow and will no longer be BOLD once it has been read.
 Employees can delete messages they have read by clicking into
the box next to the message line to be deleted and then click
on the DELETE button above
 ESS announcements are sent by administrative office staff to
employees

To view previous pay periods click on the
‘View Old Pay Stubs’ link.
Click on the pay check date to open up the pay stub to view it

Select the year you want to view
My Benefits: TimeOff
If your district uses the TimeOff (leave) Module
in the payroll/hr software you will be able to view
leave balances for sick, personal, vacation
and other leave plans

Employees can click on the provider’s website link to
view their payroll elected flex benefit balances under
Section 125

To withdraw consent, do so at the District office
