With beautiful blue skies and a slight breeze, we kicked off the 87th Anniversary Celebration of our Intracoastal Waterway at 10am Saturday, September 19th. Our Mayor welcomed the gathering crowd and introduced Mr. Brad Pickle, Exec Director of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Mr. Pickle had many good things to say about our community and especially about this Celebration. The Blessing of the Boats and the Boat Parade followed with several nice antique boats, more modern boats and a row boat named “Swee Pee” with Captain Bill Wilson (aka Popeye manning the oars). At 11am, the Children’s Theater entertained young and old with stories and character presentations. Our Chowder Down East event was a major attraction with over 270 ticket holders showing up to sample some really great chowders prepared by 15 different local restaurants and organizations. While the patrons sampled the various chowders they were entertained by the Ocracoke Sirens playing a mixture of bluegrass and country music. The hugh crowd also shopped amongst 17 artists and craft vendors and heard from 5 coastal water groups about our valuable rivers and sound and how to preserve and protect them. Several of our restaurants were so busy that 45 minute waits for food was not untypical (we’ll work on that for next year). As the Chowder crowd ate their fill of all kinds of seafood mixtures, the Sand Sounds Band from Greenville cranked up with beach music and oldies but goodies. Due to an extremely hot afternoon, it was decided to close things down at 3pm to the disappointment of the many ladies and men who had donned their best 1920’s attire for the Fashion parade. We did get most of them together for several great photo shoots. One was featured in a recent Washington News article following up on our ICW Celebration!!!! Each year the display has become larger and more charming. The display has attracted many hundreds of people from throughout Eastern North Carolina who have delighted in the action with the sights and sounds of trains and trolleys running over 200 feet of track. The trains and trolleys are made of cast iron and steel; some are nearly 100 years old. Some are modern reproductions of trains of the pre-WWII era. Mr. Don Stark heads up this amazing display that has delighted young and old alike. The display, as in years past, will be set up in the Old Town Hall, 215 E. Main St. If you have attended in the past, you know how wonderful this exhibit is and you probably also remember how “squeezed for space” they are. While we can’t change the space we do hope to better manage the crowds expected to show up again this year. Special viewing times can be arranged for school groups which will also require that we have enough volunteers to assist everyone and give all an ample opportunity to enjoy the trains. If you would be interested in being a volunteer for this wonderful exhibit, please call Don Stark at 724 263 4062 or Diana Lambeth at 252 943 3770 to sign up. Helping others to enjoy this fabulous attraction is in itself a real blessing. So call and sign up to help — thanks Belhaven Caboose Restoration Background In days-gone-by railroads were an important factor in the commercial development of Belhaven. The local spurs were connected by small railroads. But the long haul traffic was carried by the great Class1 companies such as the Southern Railroad and the Norfolk and Western. Due to economic realities these two railroads merged in 1980 to become the Norfolk Southern of today. The Caboose concept had gone out of style for business. Norfolk Southern donated a caboose with Southern Railroad markings to the town of Belhaven to be displayed next to the Chamber of Commerce building (the former railroad depot). Recently the Chamber of Commerce has become concerned that the exterior of the caboose is rapidly deteriorating. Fortunately the Caboose interior is in good condition. Remediation Plan and Execution The Chamber initiated a study to determine whether it was feasible to remediate the caboose and how such a project could be funded. A study group was authorized. During 2015 contacts were made with the Norfolk and Western Historical Society and the Roanoke Transportation Museum. We consulted archives and books by enthusiasts that provided details about the Southern fleet and the history of railroading in Eastern Carolina. Local experts on remediation techniques, regulatory issues, public relations and fund raising were contacted. The remediation plan and time line were presented to 'Small Town Main Street Project' and the Town Council by Chamber of Commerce representatives in early August. Plan approval was granted. Private benefactors have agreed to fund the remediation. Work is scheduled to begin soon. When completed, the refurbished caboose will be a reminder of the role railroads played in the commercial history of our town. Before and After Pictures
