Lesson 11/module 3
Aim: Absolute value – magnitude and distance
Opening exercise:
Record two different rational numbers that are the same distance from zero. Plot them.
4.5 and 4.5
6 and 6
What is the relationship between each pair of numbers? How do each pair of numbers relate to zero?
Discussion: Absolute value – of a number is the distance between the number and zero on a number line.
Absolute value of 5? Absolute value of 5? Why? Both 5 and 5 are the same distance from 0.
Absolute value of 1? Absolute value of 0? There is another way to write absolute value, using a symbol. Example 2
Magnitude – of a quantity is found by taking the absolute value of its numerical part.
Exercises 48
Exercises 4 9; 12 19 (don’t do #’s 10 and 11)
Closing:
I am thinking of two numbers. Both numbers have the same absolute value. What must be true about the two numbers? Can the absolute value of a number ever be a negative number? Why or why not?
No. Absolute value is the distance a number is from zero. The number of units is its absolute value. 1
