Farewell, Henry Moehring
By Mac McCullough, Diamond
O
n March 2nd, in a memo
to all residents and associates, Henry Moehring
announced his resignation as Executive Director of Asbury Methodist
Village to become the Chief Executive Officer of the Alpha 1 Foundation. This was not an easy decision
for him to make, but one he feels
good about.
The Alpha 1 Foundation’s fourfold purpose is to educate, advise,
fund and do research. Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency is a genetic disease that attacks the liver and lungs
for which no cure has been found.
It affects about 100,000 people in
the United States. Henry was diagnosed with it in 1997. The Foundation is headquartered in Miami,
Florida, but Henry says he will be
spending a lot of time traveling and
he will continue to live nearby.
When asked what he felt his greatest contribution to Asbury has been,
he replied, “Getting the cappuccino
machine in the Blue Note Bistro.”
On a more serious note, Henry said
it was building relationships, getting away from the “we vs. them”
to a “we.” This applied not only to
relationships here at Asbury Methodist Village between associates
and residents, but between staffs
at AMV and those in the Germantown corporate office. He feels the

use of Partnership Advisory Councils (PACs), Committees,Task Forces,
and Advisory Groups all helped in
bringing people together to solve
any problems that came up.
He also mentioned he has put a
lot of energy into the various renovation projects during his nine
years at Asbury. He said he wanted
to make Asbury feel like a place you
are happy to call home. The Hefner and Diamond renovations are
examples of this. He also sees progress in improved services across the
campus, particularly in the area of
health care.

You can even get it in pink.
After a pizza lunch, WAP Mobile
Life Special Interest Group Chairman Roy Wagner talked about
mobile devices. A confessed crossover from the PC world, Wagner
showed outright enthusiasm, complete with athletic bounce and
good humor as he talked about
the virtues of the iPad and iPhone
and AppleWatch and how they all
interconnect. A salesman he did not
pretend or claim to be. But I came
away wanting one of everything, if
I could just figure out how to use
them all.
Part of making this project work
was perhaps pure serendipity. Ken
Goldman, WAP president and a selfdescribed “Tech Geek,” describes his
efforts on helping bring about the
joint meeting this way:“As computer
users groups are shrinking and their
demographics are getting older, one
of my goals as WAP president has
been both to try to slow the shrinkage of our club, and also to start
working more cooperatively with
other computer clubs. Jim Utterback had approached me a while

All was secure on the seventh floor.
No intruder could find a way
To come along and decide to stay.
But I was wrong, as wrong could be,
When I awoke, oh dearie me,
I looked in the mirror and what did I see?
A stranger was standing in front of me.
She grinned at me and said, “I’ll stay.”
I groaned at her and said, “No way.
I liked myself the way I was,
Then you’re in front the mirror’s fuzz.”
She dyed my hair and thinned my crown, She

essential ingredient in human
development. All music, of
any variety, must have three ingredients: 1. Melody, 2. Harmony, and
3. Rhythm. Even in today’s raucous
21st century music, these three elements still be present despite crashing and pounding. Once a month, in

The concept of a symphonic concert at Park View evolved gradually over the past several years. Two

As springtime arrives, especially
with Mother’s Day in the offing, it’s
time to plan family activities for this
welcome time of year. Of course,
for musicians the planning has long
since been underway. Think back to
early January, and that is when we,
the Asbury Encore Chorale, started
rehearsing to offer our gift of show
tunes to you, our audience. Once
again, we have been guided by our
excellent director, Bob Johnson, and
supported by our superb pianist,
Mary Beth Gowan.
The spring concert will be full
of lush and lovely music of the theater that will delight and amuse you.
We are presenting the program in
conjunction with the newly formed
ent of an extensive Blu-Ray collection of recordings. The result is a
monthly symphony program that
follows traditional format. Each concert lasts only about an hour and
is complete with an overture and
several main bodies of music whose
composers span more than two
centuries.
The next concert will be on
Wednesday, April 20 at 4:00 p.m.
with the refreshment bar open at
3:45 p.m.The program includes Rossini’s Overture—Barber of Seville;
Schubert’s Symphony No. 8; Bizet’s

The Asbury Encore Chorale is Ready for Spring!
Frederick Encore Chorale. For last
winter’s program, the Asbury Chorale joined forces with the Frederick
Chorale for a combined Encore concert in Frederick. It was such a success that this spring the Asbury and
Frederick Chorale will be singing
together both at Asbury and in Frederick. It should be fun for everyone!
Come join us on the day before
Mothers’ Day, Saturday, May 7, 3:30

Several Wallace residents were concerned
recently when they learned that a new resident
was planning to bring a pet Vietnamese skunk
named PHEW into her apartment. However, all
concerns were put to rest when the resident produced a skunk genealogy which showed that the
pet skunk was a direct descendant of a long line
of skunks that had been specially bred to have
nonfunctioning scent pouches. To further assure
Wallace residents, a small sign will be hung on
the skunk’s tail which reads “OUT OF ODOR.”

id you know that:
1. Before Quince Orchard
was a road or a library or a
high school, it was an actual community with its own school and
churches?
2. Many of the undocumented
refugees who flee to Montgomery
County have seen their children
threatened and coerced to join
gangs as early as kindergarten in
their home countries?
3. The biggest issue that Muslim
high school students in Montgomery County face is bullying both in
and out of school?
These are issues that involve
our neighbors and they have been
recent topics at Beloved Community
Advisory Committee meetings. On
February 5, Jason Green, the son of
Reverend Dr. Gerard Green,Asbury’s
Staff Pastor for Residential Living,
spoke about the Quince Orchard
Project that he and his sister, Dr.
Kisha Green Davis, along with others, are involved in to preserve the
history of Quince Orchard, just one
of Montgomery County’s AfricanAmerican communities of a bygone
era. The school, which was founded
by his great grandfather for the education of African-American children,
operated until the 1970s. Participating in the project are high school
students from Quince Orchard High
An Open Invitation
School who gain new appreciation
for their history.
On March 4, Celia Rivas, a lawyer
and Immigration Services Coordinator with Catholic Charities, here
in Gaithersburg, outlined the various laws to enable those fleeing
violence and abuse in their home
countries to become legal residents
of the USA. Many involve long waits
and much paperwork so people
need professional assistance in navigating the system. In the meantime, especially in today’s political
climate, many live in fear of deportation, even though most of them
will not be deported. Celia credits Montgomery County police for
doing a good job of informing immigrants of their rights and where to
go to receive help.
On January 8, Nouf Bazaz of the
International Cultural Center (ICC),
located in Montgomery Village, told
the group that Muslim students
have reported an increase in bullying incidents with the advent of
anti-Muslim rhetoric in political
speeches. This is particularly troubling since students who feel marginalized are more susceptible to
extremist groups who make them
feel welcome. On Super Bowl Sunday (before the big game) several
members of the Beloved Community Initiative (BCI) attended a mostinformative session at the ICC entitled, “Who Is Recruiting Our Kids?”
The BCI has created a task force to
explore ways that it can work with
the ICC in addressing the situation.
BCI Advisory Committee Meetings are open to all who are
interested. They are held at 9:15
a.m. the first Friday of the month
in the Human Resources wing of
the Administration Building and last
approximately an hour in order to
allow attendees to fulfill other commitments. If you wish to know
the topic of each meeting, contact

Have You Met George Stosur?
By Peter Cascio,
Courtyard Homes
Y
ou have undoubtedly
seen him around. Formerly President of
the Computer Club, George is
currently Dean of the Keese
School of Continuing Education. Few people realize how
much time is involved with
selecting speakers, confirming
George
dates, meetings, having dinner
with speakers and the general
follow-up if there are last minute schedule changes. And remember, this
happens twice a week. George loves and
hates the job – he loves the people he meets
but hates the endless telephone calls, emails
and last-minute changes or cancellations.
George grew up in Poland and graduated
from the University in Krakow with a degree
in mining engineering. Fascinated by a poster at his school advertising a year of study in
Sweden, he applied and was accepted. Little
did he know that, far away in Rhode Island,
his future wife was looking at the same
poster and they met in Sweden.
George arrived in the U.S. in
1963, attended the University
of California at Berkeley, then
LSU, rounding this up with a
PhD from his Polish University
in Krakow.
Unofficially, he is Courtyard
Homes’ photographer for our
social events; that is, if he is in
residence. Otherwise he may
well be serving as guest speakStosur
er for any one of several cruise
lines. He and his wife, Roxanne, have enjoyed 18 wonderful cruises to
some exotic parts of the world. The best part
of all? When passengers tell him that the
lectures were the highlight of their vacation.
George was awarded the title of “Distinguished Lecturer” by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and has delivered more than
300 lectures on every continent except Antarctica; filling that square is only a matter of
time.
His career includes 22 years with the U.S.
Department of Energy in Washington, D.C.
where he managed the oil and gas research
and development program. He was responsible for DOE sponsored research conducted
at several universities, national laboratories,
the National Petroleum Technology Office
and joint R&D undertakings with several
countries. His non-government experience
with both Chevron and Shell was mostly
concerned with R&D on Enhanced Oil
Recovery techniques on heavy oil production problems and the stimulations of ultralow permeability gas formations, including
the first attempts to use nuclear explosives
to fracture ultra-low permeability formations. His work at DOE and in the private
sector has involved authoring 86 papers,
two textbook chapters and parts of a fivevolume encyclopedia on hydrocarbons.
Having grown up on a farm in Poland,
George puts his farming experience into his
garden plot which explodes with tomatoes,
butter- nut squash, other veggies and flowers. (Full Disclosure: We have benefited from
his abundant tomato crop and her gorgeous
dahlias.)

False Alarm
A totally false rumor concerning possible lead contamination of the
Asbury water supply was quickly put to rest when the truth became
known, but unfortunately not before a few residents picketed the administration building with signs that urged “HENRY, PLEASE GET THE LEAD
OUT! It turned out that what had happened was somebody accidently
dropped several Number 2 lead pencils into the Crawford Dining Room
coffee urn. They were quickly retrieved, the coffee urn thoroughly rinsed
and tested negative for lead.
For those craving an extra jolt in their java, Stephanie Sabine has a few
coffee flavored pencils if anyone wants them. First come, first served…

You Got It All, Grandma!
Z-Notes
I
By Phyllis W. Zeno, Wallace
arrived in Manhattan in a state of euphoria…82 years-old, newly engaged and excited beyond belief! My first outing was to
the Veterans Administration with my fiancé, and
I was practically floating on air when I passed
through security. Of course, my metal implants
set off the alarms immediately, and a very intimidating guard asked me to step aside while he
passed his wand over me.
“What have we here?” he asked, when all parts
of me beeped.
Not to be deflated, I did a little shimmy while I
pointed to the guilty parties.
“I gotta knee, and I gotta hip, and I gotta watch,
and I gotta ring…”
The guard looked at me in amazement, and
then he grinned, “Looks like you got it all, grandma!” and he waved me through.
Now, eight years later, I marvel at how many
times I think of that guard and his magical
phrase…”You got it all, grandma!”
By Phyllis W. Zeno, Wallace
Who could have imagined that at 82 I would
have met the love of my life on Match.com and
married him? Me, with a condo on Clearwater
Beach, and Harvey, with an apartment on the 15th
floor of a building on 10th Street in Greenwich
Village, with a wraparound balcony that looked
out on the Empire State Building?
What stroke of fate brought us through Maryland on our semi-annual commute from New
York to Florida for a visit to my daughter in Maryland? And what made us give up sunset over the
Gulf of Mexico for sunrise over the parking lot
of Sears and Lord and Taylor’s? An apartment in
Asbury Village, of course.
Sadly, life as a honeymoon couple at Asbury
only lasted two years, and Harvey passed on in
October, 2013. But what friendships we formed
in that brief period! And what comfort has sus-
tained me over the last few years.
Of course, having my daughter and her family
nearby has been a constant source of joy. But oh,
the myriad other pleasures!
The friendships that resulted from sharing dinner tables with so many different residents. Monday nights with the Snowdens, with George and
Harvey forever plotting croquet matches that
never came to pass because fire law restrictions
never allowed access to the wickets outside the
dining room doors.
Wednesday nights when show business aficionados Luther Saxon and Doreen Sexton came
over from Trott to join Irene Stuart and me to
reminisce about Luther’s days on Broadway. Or
those shared Birthdays once a month with the
McCullohs and the Melzers and the Forbes and
the Greens. And knowing how addicted I was to
hot cherry pie, the homemade cherry pie that
Vera brought to my door for my birthday.
And the special surprise party that Barbara
Barnard and Gail Flanagan planned for my 90th
birthday.
And of course, the continuing friendships
made through producing three years of resident
musicals. What hidden talents have been discovered through those shows… Carmine Castellano… Frank Tietze… Tony Barnard…and Agatha
Sigmond.
When I try to list the limitless blessings we all
have at Asbury,I can’t help thinking of that security guard in New York…And this grandma really
does have it all at Asbury.
And Speaking of the SHOW…
Save the Date!

sbury’s 90 anniversary is upon us. Since most of us were
either too young, or probably not even born, it’s hard to appreciate the depth of our roots. Hamburgers cost 25 cents, (the
cheeseburger had just been invented and cost 40 cents). Gasoline was about 20 cents/gallon, and a self-built Dutch Colonial
home could be had for $1,300. It is in this context that the purchase of 106 acres
from Walter Magruder was made for $25,000. That’s less than $250/acre in Montgomery County, slightly more than what those of us on a meal plan are allocated
for food each month.
While you wrap your mind around those figures ,enjoy a few of the early pictures of Asbury, reproduced from old lantern slides by Jim Utterback and Dave
Reiser of the Villas. Really makes us appreciate how far we have come.

A commemorative gift is a
meaningful way to honor
friends and loved ones. It
is a way to express gratitude
for acts of kindness,
recognize joyous occasions
such as birthdays and
anniversaries, or express
condolences to the family
of a deceased relative,
friend or acquaintance.

It is in response to several
newcomers, in particular, who are
surprised that their radio reception
is abysmal. They describe their radio

listening. It recalls those ads from
last century that showed the happy
American family-- father, mother,
Junior and Sis-- smiling as they too
seem hunched around their full
bodied tube radio.
AVTV’s Eric Thornett explains that
radio signals aren’t all that strong
and when filtered through our sturdy walls, can provide limited audio
experience. Many of us, however,
are “wired” to our radios and want
to continue the listening experience throughout our apartments.
So, what’s a girl to do? First of all,
go to your computer (yes you need
a computer) and Google your favorite radio station. Mine is WAMU,
but there are lists of others on the

programs so that you can hear them

who may be facing new challenges,
steer the best possible course for
meeting those challenges.

Concern Report forms are available through the concierges, who

quicker response. One can also call

Who should make a referral?
Residents, who feel they need help
but are unsure of how to find it,
may call. Family members, friends
or neighbors, who are concerned
about another resident, may also
make a referral. In the latter case,

Erika cautions that while people making referrals often want to

know what action was taken, HIPPA
laws prohibit the sharing of much
information. However, Erika does
respond to her phone calls. She also

awande has little to say
about the so-called Independent Living components of CCRCs, except for the
story about Alice. However, excessive administrative control in
CCRCs has been the subject of
several articles in the press recently. Unnecessary restrictions led
residents to sue the communities
for relief. In one case a resident
had enjoyed her bridge playing
group for a number of years in
the independent living sector.
When she moved to the assisted
quarters, she wasn’t permitted to
return to the independent living
area to play with her group. In
another community, when one
spouse of a couple required a

enjoyed. In both cases restrictions were removed only after seeking legal redress.
How Does this Apply
to AMV?
I am told that originally men had
to wear coats and ties in the AMV
dining rooms. I’m certainly glad
this is no longer true, although
probably the rule change only
reflected the switch to less formal
dress in our larger society. But
there still are many AMV rules and
regulations that constrict our daily
living. Before moving here I had
no idea that, presumably for consideration of the safety of all, burning
candles or having a live Christmas
tree were not allowed. Those of us

dining room hours as to determining when we eat dinner and by a
Atul Gawande
menu as to what we would like to
eat for dinner.
Some decisions seem unnecessary and even downright silly. For
example, my legal name is John, but
I have always used Jack. I was first
listed as John in the AMV resident
directory, which led to some confusion. When a caller asks for John
I tend to respond coolly, thinking
it’s an unwanted solicitation. When
the directory was being re-issued
we had the opportunity to make
corrections. I asked that John be
changed to Jack. First I was told
by one associate that they were
required by law to use legal names.
[This is a classic ploy – blame the
lawyers.] A second administrator
acknowledged that there was no
legal barrier, but at that time due
to the freshly printed version
they wouldn’t change my listing to Jack because: “If we do it
for you, we will have to do it for
1300 other people tomorrow.” So
I remained John in the directory. A
year later a newly hired associate
took three seconds to change my
name to Jack, and the confusion has
lessened, although some folks still
refer to me as John because of the
original listing.
Hope for the Future
Rules made by administrative officials inevitably are made from their
own perspective, but it might be
possible for an attitudinal shift to
occur, as happened in some nursing homes. I know that our associate staff members are eager to be
responsive and helpful, and there
are many attempts by administration to receive resident input. There
has been growing recognition by
administration that sometimes resi-
dents have experience and knowledge that associates lack. All of these
factors suggest it might be possible
for residents to be involved early in
the decision making. A good beginning would be to begin dialogue
between administers and residents
discussing the concepts found in
Being Mortal.
The series of conversations
among residents have proved helpful for some of us. For example, I am
pleased to have been able to modify
my approach to medical care. For
most of my life I have strived to be
compliant, always following “Doctor’s Orders.”6 Now if a test or
imaging study is recommended, I am
comfortable discussing whether, at
my age, the time and effort required
are really warranted. I have developed a truly collaborative relationship with my doctor, discarding my
previous mode of blind obedience.
For me it’s doctor’s suggestions, not
doctor’s orders.
H2O No!
The March issue of Village Life contained an interesting article on the importance of
hydration in elderly persons. In order to facilitate increased water consumption by residents
with limited mobility, The Shoppe is offering
6-packs of evaporated bottled water, marketed as X-WATR. Although a bit more expensive
than regular bottled water because of the
increased cost of production, X-WATR has the
advantage of being much lighter and easier
to carry and can be rehydrated at any of the
numerous water fountains and Splash stands
located on the Asbury campus. X-WATR is not
recommended for putting out fires.

O
n a visit to Machu Picchu, Peru, in 2007, I
found the place abuzz
with joyful celebration. This country’s preeminent monument made the list of
a world-wide initiative
called New 7 Wonders
of the World. Begun in
the year 2000 by the
New 7 Wonders Foundation based in Zurich,
Switzerland, this nonprofit millennium project listed 200 existing
monuments and invited the world to vote for
seven top ones through
the internet or by telephone. Multiple voting
was possible through
the telephone, but only
one vote per person for
seven monuments in
the Internet. This system of voting made it possible for
countries to promote their particular monument by vigorous campaigns urging their citizens to
vote. UNESCO and other polling
organizations deemed this process unscientific and distanced
themselves from the initiative.
Nonetheless, a polling organization from Utica, NY called this
“the largest poll on record” with
more than 100 million votes cast.
In 2007 voting ended and these
were the winners:
Great Wall of China
Taj Mahal—India
Colosseum—Italy
Petra—Jordan
Machu Picchu—Peru
Christ the Redeemer statue—
Brazil
Chichen Itza—Mexico
An inveterate list-maker, I was
intrigued by this poll and quickly
found myself going over the list to
see how many I had seen. To my
surprise and delight, I had already
seen five of the monuments. As
the wife or a corporate executive
involved in international travel,
I had the privilege and luck to
have seen these monuments in
the course of accompanying my
husband in some of his trips. So
then I made up my mind to see
the last two on the list as soon as
possible.
In 2009 I took a tour of Egypt,
which included a post trip
to Petra in Jordan. One more

monument off the list. The last
remaining one, Chichen Itza in
the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico,
could wait. In my mind, it was
only a three-hour plane ride to
the country and I could even do
it on a weekend. Anyway, fate put
a hold on my finishing the list.
In 2011 when we moved to the
Courtyards from New Jersey, my
husband had a massive stroke
that made him disabled. For the
next three years I barely left the
confines of Asbury to care for
him. I took short trips later, but
none took me near the Yucatan.
Then late last year, a good friend
in Asbury asked me if I want
to go birding with her in the
Yucatan in February. Though not
a birder, I quickly agreed to go
because included in this trip was
seeing Chichen Itza among other
Mayan temples on the tour. On
the third day, the tour group visited Chichen Itza, two hours away
from Cancun, Mexico. At last my
quest had ended! And unfortunately, so was the trip because
my friend fell ill and we had to
travel back to the United States
immediately.
For Asbury travelers, you may
come up with similar lists to do.
I know of one neighbor who has
also seen all seven. How many
of you readers have also been
this fortunate? Please call me so
we can have tea sometime and
share travel stories and even start
a travel club of lists. There are
two other programs of this Foundation: New 7 Wonders of Nature
and New 7 Wonder Cities. Shall
we get started?

A native Californian, Ruth Marquis came to
Asbury on January 12, 2016 by way of Cambodia, Iran and Bethesda. When Ruth was
twenty-one and just out of school, the Agency
for International Development came to California recruiting and Ruth signed up. She
spent two years (1956-1958) in Cambodia
and three years (1959-1962) in Iran, two very
different experiences. They were wonderful
adventures, she says, and she got to see parts
of the world that she never would have seen
otherwise.
Upon returning to the US, she relocated to
the DC area where she co-owned an employment agency in the District; was Personnel
Assistant for an R&D firm in Rosslyn, Virginia and Assistant to the Personnel Director
of the Air Lines Pilots Association. In 1981
she returned to working for the government
at the USA Physical Disability Agency, Walter
Reed Army Medical Center, From which she
retired in 2002. Along the way she met her
husband Earl, and acquired three stepchildren
who live in Colorado Springs, Albuquerque,
New Mexico, and Espoo, Finland.
Ruth attended two open houses at Asbury
and liked what she saw and heard. She was
particularly impressed by the number of
activities and she has already made inquiries
about a couple of them. She is active in her
church and sang in the choir for many years.
She is also a faithful walker, having walked
every day since she moved to AMV, even the
snowy days! She is very grateful that she no
longer has to shovel snow and with all the
time saved, she is planning to write a family
genealogy.
