Cannizzo, Executive Director New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. Just about the time you read this, the Genting Resorts World New York Casino will be opening its doors for business at Aqueduct. It only seems fitting to take this opportunity to reflect on the monumental significance of this development— and to celebrate. The opening of the Aqueduct casino ushers in what is nothing less than a completely new era for the New York Thoroughbred industry. At last—after ten years of waiting—New York’s breeders, owners, and horsemen will reap the benefits of a steady, reliable stream of significant revenue from video lottery terminals. First and foremost, you may have already heard the exciting announcement from the Breeding and Development Fund about the 50% increase in breeders’ awards and hike in award caps. JEFFREY A. If you have followed the fortunes of New Yorkbred yearlings in the 2011 sales, you have seen double-digit increases in the average price, median price, and clearance rate over last year. It would be astonishing if the same across-theboard improvements did not carry over into the weanling, short yearling, and two-year-old markets in 2012. Additionally, there was the recent announcement by NYRA that total purses for the 2012 winter/spring meeting at Aqueduct will increase by approximately $8.6-million, or 36%. Here are the nuts and bolts of the projected purse hikes for state-bred races: Condition Maiden special weight, sprint Maiden special weight, route Allowance N1X, sprint Allowance N1X, route Allowance N2X, sprint Allowance N2X, route Even before this big news from the Fund, you have already seen two other important benefits of the effect of the Aqueduct casino at work, namely a dramatic increase in the value of the horses you have bred and a hike in the New York Racing Association 2012 (NYRA projection) $50,000 55,000 52,000 57,000 54,000 59,000 2011 $38,000 39,000 40,000 41,000 42,000 43,000 Aside from the obvious direct benefits to winning owners, increased purses will mean larger awards for breeders, owners, and stallion owners, and larger fields, which in turn will increase the daily handle on which Fund revenue is based. I fully expect that the first quarter of 2012 will continue to bring nothing but good industry news for the foal crop of 2012 that you will be bringing into the world, and for the foal crop of 2013 that you are planning right now. As part of a reorganization, the Vinery New York stallions will be based at Sugar Maple Farm in Poughquag and will be joined for 2012 by newcomer Giant Surprise. By Storm Cat out the A.P. Indy mare She’s a Winner, Bluegrass Cat ranked fourth on the THOROUGHBRED TIMES list of leading second-crop sires on October 10 with $3,759,634 in 2011 progeny earnings. His leading earner with $559,096 is 2010 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes winner Kathmanblu, who subsequently finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G2). At three, the filly finished third in the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1). “We identified Bluegrass Cat as a top stallion and approached WinStar with the idea of partnering. We wanted to give the New York breeders another reason to stay home, and have the type of stallion that Kentucky breeders will follow,” Vinery President Tom Ludt said. “At only eight years old, Bluegrass Cat has it all—race record, looks, and one of the best pedigrees in the stud book. Already at stud, he has several current graded stakes runners, big books, and a lot of foals in the pipeline. So we feel like everything is in place for him to be the leading sire in New York for many years to come.” Bred and raced by WinStar, Bluegrass Cat stood the 2011 season for a $25,000 live-foal fee at WinStar in Versailles, Kentucky. No fee has been announced for the 2012 breeding season. On the racetrack, Bluegrass Cat was a graded stakes winner at two and three. In his third career start, he won Belmont Park’s 2005 Nashua Stakes (G3) and then scored in the Remsen Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct. At three, he finished second in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) to Barbaro and was second in the Belmont Stakes (G1). In his next start, he won the Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park by seven lengths and concluded his career with a second-place finish behind Bernardini in the Travers Stakes (G1). WinStar bred all-time leading New York-bred earner Funny Malloy reigns again as TOBA’s breeder of the year The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association has crowned Vivien G. Malloy, owner of Edition Farm, as its New York state breeder of the year for 2010. She previously had won the TOBA award in 2007. TOBA announced its 2010 state awards in September. Malloy and Edition were represented in 2010 by A Shin Forward, who won a Group 1 race in Japan late last year and became the second-leading New York-bred earner with career purses of $3,399,788. Edition has two properties, Edition Farm in WacVIVIEN MALLOY cabuc, where Malloy lives, and Edition Farm North, a 180-acre property in Hyde Park. 8 NEW YORK BREEDER November 2011 BLUEGRASS CAT Cide, and its executives are looking forward to making another big impression in the Empire State. “We’re ready to make a big splash in New York,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar’s president and chief executive officer. “It’s a market we’ve looked at with great interest for some time now because of the unlimited potential. Going into New York with a top-caliber stallion like Bluegrass Cat and partnering with an established forerunner in New York like Vinery fit the bill for us.” He said WinStar planned to breed as many mares to Bluegrass Cat in New York as it did in Kentucky. “Here is an example of the excitement already in New York: In five seconds [owner-breeder] Mike Repole said he was in,” Walden said. Repole, who campaigns current top three-year-olds Uncle Mo and Stay Thirsty, will be sending his Giant Surprise to the Vinery operation at Sugar Maple. A two-year-old by Giant’s Causeway out of Twisted Sis, by A.P. Indy, Giant Surprise won his only career start, a 41⁄4-length victory in a Saratoga Race Course maiden special weight race. He sustained a nondisplaced condylar fracture in his left foreleg and was retired. Giant Surprise will stand for $3,500 in 2012. “He has a great pedigree and would have had unlimited potential,” Repole said. “I will support him with my own mares and am very excited about the future of the New York breeders program. I am so excited about the future prospect of racing in New York and in the New York breeders program that I’ve also become a minority partner in Bluegrass Cat.” Vinery will be consolidating its New York stallion operation at Sugar Maple in 2012. Joining Bluegrass Cat and Giant Surprise there will be current leading New York sire Posse, Frost Giant, and Friendly Island. Empire Stud, where the Vinery stallions had been based, will be utilized for boarding. Dan Hayden, longtime manager of Sugar Maple, has been named Vinery’s general manager of New York operations. Howard and Susan Kaskel’s Sugar Maple became a part of the Vinery operation in February. He was 32 and spent the final years of his life at Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue in Pawling after being pensioned from stud duty in 1998. By Secretariat and out of Canadian Horse of the Year and champion broodmare Fanfreluche, D’Accord was bred in Virginia by Bertram and Diana Firestone, who raced him. He was a full brother to Canadian champion Medaille D’ACCORD d’Or and a half brother to two-time Canadian Horse of the Year L’Enjoleur, multiple Canadian champion La Voyageuse, and stakes winner Grand Luxe. On the racetrack, D’Accord won half of his ten career starts, including a71⁄2-length victory in the 1981 Breeders’ Futurity (G2) at Keeneland Race Course. He earned $163,368. D’Accord spent most of his stallion career in New York. From 15 crops, he sired 219 winners from 284 starters, with progeny earnings of $15,307,000. His best was multiple Grade 2 winner North East Bound, whose ten career stakes victories include the 2000 Meadowlands Cup Handicap (G2) and the 2001 Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes (G2). North East Bound finished a close second in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Churchill Downs. His leading New Yorkers were the fillies Lady D’Accord and Warfie, both of whom were bred by John Hettinger and raced by his Akindale Farm. Lady D’Accord won the Bed o’ Roses Handicap (G2) in 1992 and ’93, and Warfie won the 1989 Long Island Handicap (G2). 10 NEW YORK BREEDER November 2011 The new purse structure pays a premium to horses racing over a distance of ground. Overnight stakes, the highest level outside the stakes schedule, went for $60,000 this year. Next year, distance overnight stakes will be offer $80,000, a onethird increase, and sprints will go for $75,000, a 25% increase. The increases include New York-bred racing. Maiden special weights for New York-breds will increase to $55,000 from $39,000 for route races, a 41% jump, and sprints will go from $38,000 to $50,000, a 31.6% boost. At the first allowance level, New York-bred distance races will grow from $41,000 to $57,000, a 39.2% increase, and sprints will rise 30%, from $41,000 to $52,000. Second-level allowances will have similar increases, from $43,000 to $59,000 for distance races (37.2%), and from $42,000 to $54,000 for sprints (28.5%). In all categories, the New York-bred purse will be $10,000 less per race than its open counterpart. McClain named NYRA’s chief operating officer Ellen McClain, who has been the New York Racing Association’s senior vice president chief financial officer since July 2009, has been promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer. McClain succeeded Harold G. “Hal” Handel, who retired at the end of the Saratoga Race Course meet. In her former position, McClain restructured NYRA’s financial operation to streamline financial reporting, cash management, and compliance. “In her two years with NYRA, Ellen has become a key member of the senior management team and has developed a deep appreciation ELLEN MCCLAIN and knowledge of Thoroughbred racing,” NYRA President Charles Hayward said. “Her superlative analytical abilities and management skills will help us take advantage of the great opportunities we have to transform the business and result in the best racing experience for all industry stakeholders.” Before joining NYRA, McClain had 20 years of experience in media finance and operations, including board membership with the Media Financial Management Association and the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters. She holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration (1993) and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Brown University (1986). “Now that long-term funding from video lottery terminals will soon be available, NYRA is in a position to pursue its growth strategy and make substantial improvements and investments in the racing program,” McClain said. Adam Coglianese/NYRA photo The New York Racing Association announced in late September that purses for Aqueduct’s winter-spring meeting will increase 36% over the comparable meet this year. New York-bred purses also will rise in a total increase that NYRA estimated at $8.6-million. The meet will be the first one benefiting directly from gaming revenue from the new Resorts World New York Casino at Aqueduct, which was scheduled to open on October 28. “The 2012 winterspring meet marks a new era for our purse structures,” said NYRA President Charles Hayward, who noted that purses receive 6.5% of gross win from the video lottery terminals in the first year. “Increased purses will help bring more top owners, trainers, and horses to our tracks, create larger fields for our customers to wager on, and generate higher handle for our races.” Average daily distribution will be approximately $375,000, an increase of $100,000 from last year’s meet. Aqueduct’s winter-spring meeting in 2011 paid an average purse of $33,085 over 663 races. David Alcosser/NYRA photo GIANT VICTORY New York-bred Giant Ryan picks up his first Grade 1 victory on a sloppy track in the Vosburgh Invitational Stakes on October 1 Two days, two Grade 1 wins New Yorkers also rack up Grade 2 and Grade 3 victories in eight-day span by Don Clippinger New York-breds achieved one of the finest weekends in memory in early October when they won two Grade 1 races and added a Grade 3 victory for good measure. That spree followed a Grade 2 victory on the preceding weekend. Giant Ryan scored his first Grade 1 victory with a brilliant upset victory in the historic Vosburgh Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park on October 1. The following day and a continent away, twoyear-old filly star Weemissfrankie won her second Grade 1 race when she prevailed in the Oak Leaf Stakes at Santa Anita Park. Also on October 2, Flying Zee Stable’s Pure Gossip crushed her opponents in the Miss Grillo Stakes (G3) at Belmont. (For more on Pure Gossip and the Miss Grillo, please turn to the Pedigree Profile on page 14.) Two New Yorkers won as longshots—Pure Gossip at odds of 23.10-to-1 in the Miss Grillo and Future Prospect at odds of 18.20-to-1 when winning the $200,000 WinStar Kentucky Cup Stakes (G2) at Turfway Park on September 24—while Weemissfrankie was favored at 9-to-5 in the Oak Leaf. A Giant victory Giant Ryan carried a big winning streak into the $350,000 Vosburgh, but the conditions appeared to be against him. Heavy rains in the 24 hours prior to the race had made the track muddy, and horsemen said it became more holding as the gray afternoon progressed. Bettors into Belmont’s huge national wagering pool (more 12 NEW YORK BREEDER November 2011 than $1.9-million in play on the Vosburgh alone) also concluded that conditions were stacked against Giant Ryan. He was dismissed at odds of 12.20-to-1, the fifth-longest odds among seven pari-mutuel interests, despite carrying a streak of five victories heading into the historic six-furlong sprint. In his previous start, Shivananda Parbhoo’s five-year-old New York-bred had won a free pass into the $1.5-million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) with a neck score in the Smile Sprint Handicap (G2) at Calder Race Course on July 9. Giant Ryan certainly quieted the naysayers, however, with a brilliant half-length Vosburgh victory that propelled him into serious consideration for the Breeders’ Cup race at Churchill Downs on November 5. Ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, Giant Ryan went to the lead at the start from the fifth post position, set a solid pace, and easily repelled the dogged challenge of Force Freeze to collect his first Grade 1 victory. The Freud horse set honest fractions throughout—:22.10 for the first quarter-mile and :44.36 for the half—before winning in 1:09.10 under moderate right-handed pressure from Velasquez. Giant Ryan’s Vosburgh score was the third Grade 1 victory of the year for New York-bred runners, following Mission Approved in the Woodford Reserve Manhattan Handicap in June and Weemissfrankie in the Del Mar Debutante in September. Several factors probably were involved in the thinking of bet- Giant Ryan certainly quieted his naysayers with a brilliant half-length Vosburgh victory that propelled him into serious consideration for the $1.5-million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs on November 5. Giant Ryan also likes to run on or near the pace, and that also figured into Giant Ryan’s Vosburgh game plan. “If he couldn’t lead, he’d sit second,” said Shivananda Parbhoo, who spells his last name differently than his father. Giant Ryan’s quick start paid off as trouble developed behind him. Trappe Shot, breaking from the seventh starting position, had a moderate early bump. Euroears, leaving from the three hole, was bumped by Calibrachoa and then herded the horses inside him toward the rail, forcing 15.10-to-1 Apriority to take back. Trappe Shot finished fourth, while Euroears never was a factor and finished eighth. Giant Ryan opened a 11⁄2-length lead over Force Freeze through the first quarter-mile and maintained that advantage to the furlong pole. “I had a lot of horse at the top of the stretch,” Velasquez said. “It’s been a long time since he’d run, but he tries hard every time.” Paco Lopez, aboard Force Freeze, made his move in the middle of the track and outside Giant Ryan’s range of vision, but the leader maintained his pace to the finish line while completing the final quarter-mile in :24.74. The Vosburgh always had been on the Parboo family’s radar as a steppingstone to Churchill Downs. Benoit & Associates photo tors, who effectively threw Giant Ryan out of pari-mutuel considerations. He had gone exactly 12 weeks without a start, but that was by design. The Vosburgh was to be his eighth start of the year, with the five-race winning streak preceded by two unplaced finishes at Gulfstream Park to open the year. Trainer Bisnath Parboo, the owner’s father, said Giant Ryan needed a break after the grueling schedule, which included wins in the restricted Hamlet Stakes at Aqueduct on April 6, an optional-claimer at Belmont on May 4, and the open Ponche Handicap at Calder, his home track, on June 11, followed by the Smile. Another factor certainly was the competition. Giant Ryan had won the six-furlong Smile by a neck in 1:11.34 on Calder’s main track and had not generated an especially impressive speed figure. In the Vosburgh, he was facing opponents who had posted fast speed numbers in their previous starts. Favored at 1.05-to-1 was Mill House’s Trappe Shot, who had been beaten a nose in Saratoga Race Course’s Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) in his previous start on August 7 after a runaway victory in Belmont’s True North Handicap (G2) on June 11. Second choice at 2.15-to-1 was James and Marilyn Helzer’s Euroears, who was shipped east after winning Del Mar’s Bing Crosby Handicap (G1) on July 31 for trainer Bob Baffert. The third choice was Force Freeze at 7-to-1, and the Mike Repole entry of Caixa Eletronica and Calibrachoa was fourth in the mutuel pools at 11-to-1. One factor that did not weigh heavily was Giant Ryan’s ability on an off track. He had won the Smile on a track rated as good, and the track for the Belmont optional claimer in May had been sloppy. “My horse likes the sloppy track,” Velasquez said. WEEMISSFRANKIE New York-bred Sunriver fully kicks home late to win Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes “This was to see if he could compete with the best horses,” Shivananda Parbhoo said. “I will keep him here [at Belmont] for a week or two, and then he will ship directly to Churchill Downs. He will leave three weeks before the Breeders’ Cup.” A $100,000 supplemental payment will be made to pre-enter Giant Ryan if all continues according to plan. Giant Ryan certainly has done enough to pay his way into the race. He earned $210,000 in the Vosburgh to raise his 2011 earnings to $559,490. Bred by Becky Thomas and Lewis Lakin, Giant Ryan was foaled at their former farm in New York and was sold as a weanling for $14,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s 2006 fall mixed sale. He did not reach his reserve price on a final bid of $25,000 at the OBS March 2008 selected sale of twoyear-olds in training but was sold to Shivananda Racing for $27,000 at the subsequent OBS June sale of two-year-olds and horses in training that year. A two-time winner at Aqueduct late in 2008, he was briefly on the 2009 Triple Crown trail and was unplaced in the Gotham Stakes (G3), his final start of the year. He also was winless in his only 2010 start before beginning his current streak with an optional allowance score at Aqueduct on March 4. A native of Trinidad, Bisnath Parboo resettled his family in Florida in 2009 after many years in New York. An owner since 1982, he took out his trainer’s license at the end of the 2007 racing season. He has approximately 20 horses based at Calder, all owned by family members, and Sherry Parboo was the leading owner for the Calder summer-fall meeting, which ended on September 30. Bisnath Parboo was second in the Calder standings with 26 wins from 108 starts, a 24% strike rate, and purse earnings of $583,854. Double for Freud Freud, who stands at Sequel Stallions New York, collected his second graded victory in a week when Giant Ryan flashed past the finish line in the Vosburgh. The Storm Cat stallion also sired Future Prospect, the WinStar Kentucky Cup winner who like Giant Ryan was bred by Thomas and Lakin. A seven-year-old gelding out of Devil’s Waltz, by Marshua’s Dancer, Future Prospect set most of the pace on Turfway’s continued on page 14 NEW YORK BREEDER November 2011 13 RACING ROUNDUP from page 13 Polytrack surface and won by three-quarters of a length over Grade 1 winner General Quarters. Trained by owner Dodson Skaggs, Future Prospect was accorded no respect despite a three-race winning streak in optional claimers at Churchill Downs and Presque Isle Downs. Ridden by Edgar Prado, Future Prospect ran the Kentucky Cup’s 11⁄16 miles in 1:44.71 on the synthetic surface. Future Prospect had won two restricted stakes in 2009, including the Funny Cide Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, but he went to the sidelines with a suspensory ligament injury. After a 17-month recuperation, he returned to the races with an optional-claiming victory at Turfway in March. Although Future Prospect is nominated to the Breeders’ Cup, Skaggs said he was uncertain whether he would take a shot at any of the Churchill Downs races. Still, he was thrilled by how well Future Prospect has returned to the races. “He’s run at seven different tracks, and he’s run well at all of them,” Skaggs said. “He doesn’t have to take his track or his jockey with him.” Prado was the fourth jockey during Future Prospect’s four-race winning streak. The Racing Hall of Fame jockey solicited the mount on the recommendation of Manoel Cruz, who had ridden him in a Churchill Downs victory but was unavailable for the WinStar Kentucky Cup. Standing tall in California Weemissfrankie had made the case that she was a big-time filly with her 11⁄4-length victory in the $250,000 Del Mar Debutante (G1) on September 3. That race and her debut victory were on Del Mar’s synthetic Polytrack surface, and the question for trainer Peter Eurton and the ownership group was whether her talent would translate to a dirt track. The $250,000 Oak Leaf on Santa Anita’s refurbished dirt track appeared to answer that question. Clearly, the New York-bred Sunriver filly was not happy with dirt hitting her in the face for the first time in a race, and she backed off by as many as five lengths from the pace of Self Preservation through the first half-mile. Jockey Rafael Bejarano, who has ridden her in all three starts, moved her into the clear leaving the clubhouse turn. “When I got to the top of the stretch I put her clear, and like always she showed me a big kick in the stretch. I gave her a little push in the end and she showed me an unbelievable kick,” Bejarano said. Indeed, Weemissfrankie trailed Candrea by 21⁄2 lengths at the furlong pole and won by a half-length. Named for the late actor and producer Frank Alesia, Weemissfrankie covered the Oak Leaf’s 11⁄16 miles in 1:42.98 on a fast track. Eurton confirmed that the next step would be to Churchill Downs, probably for the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on November 4, although he is giving some thought to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G2) on the same program. “It’s still a consideration, especially when you figure out who’s going and who’s not, but it’s probably going to be dirt,” he said. “It would be kind of silly [to run on the turf], but it’s just a thought. You have options. That’s the beauty part about it.” Weemissfrankie’s second straight $150,000 payday raised her career earnings to $337,800 in three starts. At Saratoga Race Course in August, his contributions to New York racing were recognized, and his widow, Viane, accepted Lizza’s award as leading owner of the 2011 Belmont Park spring-summer meeting. Lizza’s passion was racing, but that passion also had a strong breeding component. Its vitality is evident in Flying Zee’s two graded stakes winners this year: Street Game in the Hill Prince Stakes (G3) during Belmont’s spring meeting and Pure Gossip in the Miss Grillo Stakes (G3) on OcCARL LIZZA tober 2 at Belmont. Both were bred by Lizza’s Nustar Breeding LLC and are closely related. Pure Gossip is out of the Dixieland Band mare Dixieland Achiever, a half sister to Street Game, who is by Street Cry (Ire), out of Thunder Achiever, by Thunder Puddles. Lizza’s activity as a breeder reaches back to the early 1980s, just as he emerged as a presence on the national racing scene. The roots of Street Game’s and Pure Gossip’s family extend to Marathon Girl, a Fleet Nasrullah filly who was bred in Kentucky by Mereworth Farm and raced for Flying Zee. The filly out of Miss Twist, by Prince John, won her first start, a 1979 maiden special weight for two-year-old fillies at Saratoga Race Course. In her next start, she finished third in the Spinaway Stakes (G1), five lengths behind eventual juvenile filly champion Smart Angle. By fall, however, Lizza and trainer Jose Martin had concluded that Marathon Girl would never be a stakes winner and kept her in allowance races, where she was competitive. Miss Twist 61 NYRA photo Noble Nashua In time, Lizza would have an appropriate mate for her, another Kentucky-bred named Noble Nashua. One of the best horses raced by Lizza in the Flying Zee silks, Noble Nashua finished second to eventual juvenile male champion Lord Avie in the 1980 Champagne Stakes (G1) and made a run at the Triple Crown with a thirdplace finish in the Gotham Stakes (G2) and a fourth in the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1). After being well beaten by Pleasant Colony in the Wood and Kentucky Derby (G1), followed by a fifth-place finish in the Pennsylvania Derby (G2) behind subsequent Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Summing, Lizza and Martin gave Noble Nashua a confidence booster in a Belmont allowance race and then went after the division leaders again. He won the Dwyer Stakes (G2) at Belmont and then shipped across the country to score a resounding victory in the Swaps Stakes (G1) at Hollywood Park. Returned to New York, he finished sixth behind the New York breeding industry’s first Grade 1 winner, Fio Rito, in the Whitney Handicap (G1) and then was fourth to Willow Hour in the Travers Stakes (G1) on a very sloppy track. Finishing ahead of him were Pleasant Colony and Lord Avie. Noble Nashua snapped back from his Saratoga defeats and had a memorable fall season at Belmont. He won the Jerome Handicap (G2) against three-year-olds and, after a misguided trip across the Hudson River for the Meadowlands’ Pegasus Handicap (eighth to Summing as the even-money favorite), he scored the biggest victory of his career in the Marlboro Cup Invitational Handicap (G1), which he won by 33⁄4 lengths over Amber Pass. Also in 1983, he finished second to eventual Horse of the Year All Along (Fr) in the Rothmans International (G1) and the Turf Classic (G1), then run at Aqueduct. Retired at the end of the 1983 racing season, Thunder Puddles began a long career at stud in New York. From 290 foals in 19 crops, he sired nine stakes winners and three graded stakes winners. Thunder Achiever PURE GOSSIP His top performer was Thunder Rumble, winner of the 1992 Travers (G1) and Jim Dandy (G2) Stakes. Another of his graded winners was Thunder Achiever, a 1993 filly out of Flying Zee’s Anthenian Girl. New York-bred Thunder Achiever possessed the durability of her damsire, Noble Nashua, and some of his talent, too. She won seven of 27 starts and capped her career with a victory in the 1996 First Flight Handicap (G2) at Aqueduct. She also won the 1995 New York Stallion Fifth Avenue Stakes and the East View Stakes. Retired after a winless 1997 racing season, Thunder Achiever began her career as a broodmare with some difficulty. Her first foal was unplaced in two starts, and her second foal to survive, Dixieland Achiever, never raced. Lizza retained Dixieland Achiever, however, and she repaid his loyalty. Her 2008 foal, the Tale of the Cat filly Lady Vi, won last year’s Lady Finger Stakes. Her 2009 foal is Pure Gossip, who pulled off a stunning 61⁄2-length victory in the Miss Grillo at 18 NEW YORK BREEDER November 2011 Adam Coglianese/NYRA photo PEDIGREE PROFILE from page 17 23.10-to-1 for Flying Zee and trainer Phil Serpe. Thunder Achiever’s hard luck at stud continued until 2005, when she foaled Multidude, a Fusaichi Pegasus colt who earned more than $100,000. Her 2008 foal is Street Game, who also is trained by Serpe and has earned $140,712. While New York racing has lost Carl Lizza, the family that he nurtured through Marathon Girl continues to win important races at the metropolitan tracks. Hidden Brook Farm will be the agent for the dispersals of Flying Zee, which is owned by the estate of Carl Lizza Jr., who died in July. The dispersal was to begin with 40 yearlings, all bred in New York, at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale in Lexington on October 26. The yearling-sale catalog containing the Flying Zee horses is available on the Fasig-Tipton website, www.fasigtipton.com. The yearlings are by such sires as Giant’s Causeway, Bernardini, Tapit, Lemon Drop Kid, Harlan’s Holiday, Speightstown, and Holy Bull. The group also includes several yearlings by Western Expression, who stands at Highcliff Farm, which was co-owned by Lizza and remains in operation under his family’s management in Delanson. The dispersal will continue with weanlings, broodmares, and horses of racing age scheduled for the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December mixed sale in Timonium, Maryland, on December 5.
