Symbol of Beauty, Dignity,
and Perseverance
~
Honored as one of the oldest in Florida,
a century-old magnolia tree stands tall
among the lush vegetation and soaring
pine trees that encompass the serene
location of The Refuge. This beautiful
tree serves as a symbol of how nature
weathers even the toughest storms,
only to bloom once again after clouds
have parted. This icon is a beacon of
hope to all who come to The Refuge
for treatment as every client can learn
to persevere through life’s storms, heal,
recover from addiction and mental
illness, and become a healthy and
happy person.

Body, Mind, & Spirit
The Refuge, a 12-Step-oriented Residential Treatment Center,
recognizes the connection between mind, body, and spirit.
We have designed our approach to care such that individuals
battling a traumatic past, addiction, or mental health issues
can understand the full scope of what is at the core of
these concerns. We make a point to ensure the integrity
of our programming by bringing awareness to one’s body,
environment, emotions, and consciousness.
“I will always remain grateful for what The Refuge taught me and
how they gave me the tools to have a life beyond my wildest dreams.”
- Alum
In addition to various therapies, we offer recreational activities,
such as yoga, canoeing, fishing, and horseback riding. These
therapies create a mindful connection between physical and
emotional limitations. We will encourage you to confront and
overcome obstacles and fears so that you can fully realize your
potential to thrive.
We incorporate 12-Step workshops and meetings as part of our
care so as to foster a sense of camaraderie among clients who
are wrestling with similar concerns. We believe that the human
connection is integral in the formation of positive change.
Realizing that you are not alone can be a powerful concept,
and understanding that you are supported while receiving our
holistic care ultimately produces true healing.
Through the use of individual, group, and experiential therapies,
we aim to change your emotional landscape and help you form
an enhanced sense of self. Upon completing treatment, which
can also include holotropic breathwork, acupuncture, massage,
and mindfulness meditation, you will feel renewed and find an
inner strength that is a force to be reckoned with.
“Life just wasn’t going my way. But I wanted it to. The Refuge helped
me pick up the pieces. I feel so good now.
- Alum
Moving into the light of spirituality and learning how to give
and receive love is unavoidable when love and light are all
around you. Spirituality becomes a vibrant force as the beautiful
environment, caring professional staff, and the therapeutic
milieu interact to allow one to become connected.
a Healing Place… a Community of Caring…. a Path You Forge….
At The Refuge, people who are struggling with trauma,
addictions to drugs, alcohol, sex, or any process addictions will
find help. We also treat any number of other mental health
issues. It is here that you can begin to work on and receive
the healing care that will help you overcome these torments.
The calm setting in which treatment occurs brings a sense
of tranquility and peace that will strengthen you from the
moment you arrive. Set directly in the middle of a wildlife
refuge on the banks of the Ocklawaha/St. John’s Rivers, you
will intuitively know that you are protected and safe.
Throughout your stay, you will be given the guidance and
tools necessary to combat intense emotional pain, to conquer
addiction, and to break harmful behavior patterns that have
otherwise prevented a healthy lifestyle. You will build the
foundation for your own inner refuge, which includes both
improved self-esteem and newfound confidence that you may
not have known were possible.
“ You won’t see suffering in their faces because they’ve found a
new life, full of peace and hope. ”
-Judy Crane
Our experienced and qualified staff are there for you as pillars of
continuing support. Additionally, the holistic treatment provided
is focused on healing the mind, body, and spirit, all of which are
necessary for long-lasting healing and recovery.
“I had lost myself, and continued to ask myself, ‘what happened
– who am I?’ Here, not only did I find myself, but I was able to
evolve into an even greater being than I once was.”
-Suzanne H.
Upon completion of your treatment, you will no longer feel
tethered to the negative experiences and choices of your past.
You will have the tools necessary to live a life beyond your
wildest dreams.
“The Refuge was an amazing experience that got me to where
I am today. I am forever grateful for the help that allowed me
to leave the past where it belongs so that I could unlock a
beautiful future.”
-Alum
Joy, Happiness, Love
Life can entail many unexpected twists and turns that can derail
us from our path. Some of these experiences can bring about
joy and excitement, while others cause sadness, pain, and fear.
When faced with adversity, some of us have found false solace
in drugs, alcohol, or other unhealthy obsessions that never quite
fill that hollow void of unhappiness.
We sometimes turn to unhealthy ways of coping – especially
when our inner strength is put to the test. Known as Soul
Wounds, this unseen emotional pain can keep us from true
healing and prohibit us from connecting to true love, joy, peace,
and happiness. In order to break the chains of our past that have
kept us stuck in unhealthy patterns of behavior, true healing –
rather than just coping – must occur.
If you have a deep darkness within and you feel the pain of
isolation and hopelessness, there is a place you can go. The
Refuge is that place. The Refuge is where you can find hope,
relief, and comfort in knowing that there is the ability to heal.
“I will always remain grateful for what The Refuge taught me and
how they gave me the tools to have a life beyond my wildest dreams.”

confusion surrounding my trauma was treated, I kept repeating
the same patterns in my life, which resulted in the same despair
and confusion over and over again. The Refuge offered a loving,

Residential Treatment Program
As part of the superior care provided, The
Refuge offers an on-site, 12-bed, full medical
detoxification program for men and women
over the age of 18. Specially-trained addiction
physicians and nurses oversee every aspect
of this program and facilitate individualized
treatment for those who are working to recover
from an addiction to alcohol, heroin, morphine,
oxycodone, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or
other prescription or street drugs. The length of
stay for a client in this program averages between
7 to 10 days. However, it can be adjusted based
on an individual’s needs. Those requiring detox
services often complete this program and go on
to engage in our residential program to continue
the process of recovery.
The Refuge has secured its status as a leader
in trauma and addiction treatment by offering
premier residential care for individuals who are
struggling with trauma/PTSD, addiction, and other
self-destructive behaviors. Offered in a serene
environment that is conducive to healing, our
residential treatment program includes various
therapeutic interventions and modalities, all of
which are designed to treat the whole person.
Individual, group, and experiential therapies
occur daily and are administered by experienced
and qualified staff who are devoted to helping
every client succeed in overcoming the hurt and
emotional turmoil that results after a person
endures trauma. This program is tailored to meet
the needs of each client so as to ensure lasting
healing and recovery.
Family Week
Families can often be a powerful source of support
for a person entering treatment, but unfortunately
many family members are also struggling with issues
related to generational trauma and their loved
one’s substance abuse and mental health issues.
In order to encourage recovery in both individuals
and their families, we are proud to offer our Family
Week Program. This four-day program is designed to
help families address stress, generational pain, and
unhealthy relationship dynamics that can prevent
clients and families alike from finding true healing.
The Refuge Family Week Program, which occurs every
six weeks, includes psychoeducational presentations,
experiential groups, individual therapy sessions, family
therapy sessions, and large group sessions. Our goal is
to educate families on trauma and addiction, provide
clients with ongoing support, and begin the process of
healing the family as a whole. Family members who
participate in the program are able to work on their
own healing, giving both themselves and their loved
one a better chance at long-term recovery.
“The Refuge was a life-changing experience for me and my entire
family. We healed as a family and that is something I will always
be grateful for.” -Family
“The process group where my son and his group read stories was
the most impactful moment of my life. There wasn’t a dry eye in
the room. Real Healing! ” -Family
“During the family week, I watched over 100 people laugh and cry
as one big family. It showed me that our family wasn’t broken.” -Family
