Accompanying seasonal
migration to prevent conflict
and improve adaptation to
climate risks
AFD is implementing the ‘Water for peace’ pastoral water
distribution system, which includes building wells, marking out
seasonal migration corridors and building a bridge to improve
coexistence between sedentary farmers and nomadic herders.

BACKGROUND
In Chad, one of the biggest countries in
central Africa, herding accounts for 18%
of GDP and sustains 40% of the rural
population.
For as long as anyone can remember, the
northern herders have migrated their livestock to the south. The spread of agriculture, caused by population pressure, has
led to tensions between sedentary farmers
and nomadic herders. Furthermore, rainfall
that varies widely between regions and the
lack of water infrastructure means herders
are exposed to considerable climate risk.
For 20 years, AFD has supported Chad’s
pastoral water programme to improve water
supplies for herds and livestock farmers
and secure access to pastures. In 2002,
Chad launched a water and purification
masterplan to tackle these issues by 2020.
THE PROJECT
Via an €11 million grant, AFD is contributing
to 40 new wells in the centre of Chad
and the rehabilitation of 40 others. The
project also includes marking out 300 km
of seasonal migration corridors, negotiated
and defined in concert with herders and
farmers.
These new water points and migration
corridors will enable new pastures to be
opened up, delaying the arrival of herds
onto cultivated areas and thus diminishing
tensions between communities.
