BIOL 1120 – General Biology 2
Course Syllabus - - Spring 2015 Semester - -
Course Information
Course Description:
A survey of the animal kingdom including embryonic development, structure and function of organ
systems and behavioral concepts. A survey of the plant kingdom with emphasis on morphological,
physiological, and reproductive aspects of plants. 3 Hours lecture, 2 hours lab
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Classify organisms of the major taxa of the plant and animal kingdoms based on
characteristics unique to each taxon; including tissues, symmetry, body plan, organ
systems and alternation of generations.
2. Identify various changes that lead to modern biodiversity of plant and animal taxa.
3. Identify the structure and functions of the major organs and organ systems of the
plant and animal taxa.
4. Analyze and discuss the impact of biological discovery on human thought and
behavior
Prerequisites:
Successful completion of all learning support competencies: Reading Competency 1 and 2, Writing
Competency 1 & 2, and Math Competencies 1-5.
Course Topics:
In this course, we will…
1.
Classify organisms in the plant kingdom to phylum based upon characteristics of
structure and life history.
2.
Relate the structure and function of organs and organ systems of the plant kingdom.
3.
Describe the evolution and importance of alternation of generations in plant
reproduction.
4.
Characterize the importance of flowers and fruit to the evolution and diversity of
angiosperms.
5.
Classify invertebrate animals to phylum, based upon characteristics of symmetry, body
plan, organs and organ systems, and life history.
6.
Classify vertebrate animals to class based upon characteristics of body plan organs,
organ systems, and life history.

Assessment and Grading
Testing Procedures:
Exams may be issued as a combination of in class exams and take home exams and/or
projects
Exams in class will be closed note and closed book. Any resources that can be used will be
announced in advance and students must bring that resource to the exam
Take home exams will be open note, open book. Online resources and other individuals may
NOT be consulted for take home exams. Any questions regarding the exam should be
directed to the instructor.
If you will be unable to take an exam, or miss one for any reason, a make-up exam must be
taken in the Proctored Testing Center at the LRC. Make up exams will be online and closed
note, closed book. If the make-up exam is not completed within 5 school days a zero will be
given and no make-up exam will be allowed.
Any plagiarism will result in a zero for the entire exam. Plagiarism includes using unapproved
resources, copying answers from other students, discussing exams with other students, and
any other use of ideas and explanations that are not yours alone.
Grading Procedures:
Overall Grade for Biology 1110:
Lecture: 80%
Lab: 20%
To calculate overall grade:
(Lecture Grade x 0.80 ) + (Lab Grade x 0.20) = Final Grade
Your grade in lecture will be based on a point system.
This means that your grade will be calculated as follows:
Total Points Earned on All Assignments
x 100 = lecture grade
Total Points Possible on All Assignments
Your lecture grade will consist of:
**3 unit exams (100 points each) = 300 points
Online Chapter Discussions: 10 points each
Homework Assignments: 10 - 20 points each
Quizzes: 10 points each
Daily Note Check/Participation: 2 points each
**Cumulative Final Exam = 100 points
Your lab grade will consist of:
Weekly lab assignments = 10 - 50 points each
Mid Term Lab Practical = 50 pts
Final Lab Practical = 100 pts
**If your overall grade is a 90 or better, before the final exam, you will be exempt from the final
exam. If you do not have a 90 or better you will be required to take the final exam, however the
lowest exam grade (including the final) will be dropped from the final grade calculation. If you have a
zero for any exam, this will NOT be dropped from the final grade calculation.
Additional assignments may be added to the course at the instructor’s discretion.

General:
Students are expected to prepare for class by staying up-to-date on postings in the eLearn course
shell: assignments, assessments, and reminders will be posted there.
Working cooperatively on assignments that are not quizzes or tests is encouraged. You may contact
other students through eLearn, email, phone, or in person. You should never copy (including
copy/paste) work that is not your own. Any students who work together on an assignment must
still each submit the assignment written in their own words. Plagiarism will result in a grade of zero
for all participants. If you are uncertain if it is acceptable to work with another student on an
assignment contact your instructor.
If you miss a lab, and your absence is excused, you must complete an online lab to make up material
missed in lab. The labs will NOT be identical, but will help you learn that material that you have
missed. Lab make-ups will be due within five lecture days of the missed lab, or you will receive a zero.
See DSCC catalogue for specific rules regarding non-discrimination, harassment, safety and security,
and weapons policies.
