The Monkey’s Paw
Please read AND PRINT W.W. Jacobs short story, “The Monkey’s Paw.”
While reading the poem, have a pencil and highlighter in hand. I want you to
annotate while reading. Remember the examples I showed you of 7th, 9th,
and 11th grade annotation? I want
The Monkey’s Paw to be marked up
just as much.
Examples of what to annotate:

Vocabulary words (circle them and define them in the margins)

Ask questions on the side of the page. You need to have at least 4
questions to ask in class.

Underline main topic, or key ideas

See if you can identify the mood of the poem

Put a ? in spots where you don’t understand what’s going on.
These are just some examples. There are plenty of other annotation tools
you can use.
