Truck lane restrictions

Truck lane restrictions
From 1 July 2010
All road users need to “share the road”.
From 1 July 2010, trucks over 4.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) will be restricted from the right-hand lane of selected
multi-lane freeways, starting with the Princes Freeway between Kororoit Creek Road, Altona, and Avalon Road, Lara.
Restrictions and penalties start from 1 July 2010.
Trucks will initially be prohibited from travelling in the right lane along Princes Freeway between Kororoit Creek Road,
Altona, and Avalon Road, Lara. Soon afterwards, lane restrictions will apply on Eastlink where it has at least three lanes.
The restrictions will apply 24 hours a day and truck drivers caught using the restricted lane will be subject to a penalty of up
to a maximum of $358.00.
The ‘Keep Left Unless Overtaking’ rule will still apply to all motorists.
This initiative will help all vehicles to share the road and improve efficiency and safety.
Q. Will truck lane
restrictions be rolled
out on all threelane freeways?
A. The next rollout
will be on Eastlink
and VicRoads is
investigating the
rollout on other
freeways with three
or more lanes that
have significant heavy
vehicle use.
Q. Is this initiative
an attack on truck
driver behaviour?
A. No – this is part
of a broader plan
to encourage all
road users to better
“share the road”,
making for a safer
and more efficient
driving environment.
Q. Where will the
restrictions start
and finish?
A. Signs will be
installed in both
directions, clearly
indicating the
start and finish of
the restrictions.
