Continue to involve the families and neighbors of your center and don’t forget to get creative! Explore reading BOOK RESCUES Have the children pretend that the books are in danger and that they must rescue them and take them home. BOOK EXPLORERS Books let you explore new and fantastic worlds! You can have an explorer’s party! The children can dress up as any type of explorer from sailor to astronaut in search of a great story. TEDDY BEAR PICNIC Have the children bring in their favorite stuffed animal. The toys can join the children in a picnic and help them pick out books. Afterwards the children can practice reading to the toys. THANKSGIVING Invite friends and family for an early Thanksgiving Dinner. HAND PRINT TURKEY Trace your hands and your feet and make a fabulous fun Thanksgiving Turkey! What you need: • construction paper • scissors • crayons • glue What you do: • Trace your hands with your fingers apart on different colors of construction paper and cut the handprints out. These will be your turkey feathers! • Next trace your feet with your shoes on and cut out your footprints. These will make your turkey’s body. • Glue the two footprints together matching the tops (the heels) and spreading out the bottoms to make sort of a pear shape. • Overlay the handprints around the turkey’s body for feathers. • Now you can draw on a beak, wattle, and feet or cut them out of construction paper scraps and FIRE FIGHTER’S HAT Have you ever wanted to be a fire fighter? Well here’s your chance! Create your own brightly colored fire fighter hat and go racing off the the next fire! What you need: • red construction paper • scissors • tape • glue • white paper • crayons What to do: • To create a fire fighter hat, take a piece of red construction paper and cut an oval in it. Be sure leave one side of the oval intact. You can do this free hand or use the template on the last page. • Next pull the oval up towards you to create the front of the hat. This will leave a space for your head and allow you to wear your hat. • Next trim the edges of the red construction paper so they are rounded. • Now decorate your hat with black stripes, paper designs, crayons, and other materials. • Add a symbol to the front of the oval you pulled up. They create tiny tunnels through the pages like termites in a piece of wood. A way to keep bookworms from eating books is to keep using them. So open a book today and read!
