Some polynomials need to be factored more than once to be
completely factored. This week we will explore the different
methods to factor completely.
We begin the topic
Factoring Completely
using GCF and D2PS factoring.
Factor: 2x2 - 50
Example 1
1) Look for the greatest common
factor and factor the binomial:
2(x2 - 25)
2) Notice (x2 - 25) is the difference
of two perfect squares. Bring down
2(x + 5)(x - 5) the 2 and factor (x2 - 25) .
3) 2x2 - 50 is now factored completely.
The answer has 3 factors!
4) Multiply to check.

Example 2
Factor: 2x2 - 18y2
1)Find the GCF and factor the
binomial.
2(x2 - 9y2)
2) Factor the difference of 2 perfect squares.
(Remember to bring down the 2.)
3) You're finished. The answer has
2(x + 3y)(x - 3y)
three factors.
4) Multiply to check.
Example 3
1) Find the GCF and
Factor:
16y2 - 16
16(y2 - 1)
factor the binomial.
2) Bring down the 16.
Factor the difference
16(y + 1)(y - 1)
of two perfect squares.
3) Multiply to check.
