Abstract
Beauty is one aspect in human life that is inherent in every woman's self.
In literary works, George Gordon Byron wrote poems related to the beauty
entitled “She Walks in Beauty” and “There be None of Beauty’s Daughters”. The
purpose of this study is to gain the concept of beauty lies in those two Lord
Byron’s poems according to the respondents. In this study, the writer uses reader
response approach because it is a very precise method to be applied to gain the
concept of beauty from the respondents based on their knowledge and experience.
In this study, the writer took those two Lord Byron’s poems to be analyzed using
the English Department students of Faculty of Humanities of Universitas
Airlangga as the respondents. The collection of the data uses open questionnaire
that consisted of five questions. Furthermore, in analyzing the data, the writer uses
descriptive interpretative method. As the result, the writer found some different
concepts of beauty laying in those poems according to the respondents. As the
result, the writer categorizes the concept of beauty that lies in the poem “She
Walks in Beauty” into natural beauty, pure beauty, physical beauty, beauty as life
enjoyment, beauty as an idol, indescribable beauty, pleasurable beauty, elegant
beauty and beauty in the eye of the beholder. Furthermore, the writer categorizes
the concept of beauty that lies in the poem “There be None of Beauty’s
Daughters” into natural beauty, physical beauty, non-physical beauty, beauty as
an idol, pleasurable beauty, and irreplaceable beauty.
