With nine hundred years of history, it is one of the oldest houses in the country and moreover one of the only houses in England to have remained in one family’s ownership for its entire existence. Haddon Hall was originally the home of the Vernon family, passing into the ownership of the Manners family in the 1500’s when Sir George Vernon died leaving the Hall to his daughter Dorothy and her husband Sir John Manners, second son of Thomas Manners, the 1st Earl of Rutland. The secret of Haddon’s uniqueness is the Hall having remained empty for nearly two hundred years from the 1700’s, the family preferring to live in their main seat, Belvoir Castle. This absence left the house unaltered during the modernising period of the Georgians and Victorians, which is why venturing into Haddon is like stepping back in time. The Tudor banqueting hall remains furnished with its original dais table, behind which is a tapestry gifted by Henry VIII to the family as a thank you. The parlour boasts a glorious painted ceiling of Tudor roses. Exquisite fifteenth century frescoes adorn the walls of the Norman chapel, which retains its original Saxon font. The extravagant first floor Elizabethan rooms present wonderful Bombée Venetian glass windows culminating with the 110 ft Robert Smythson designed Long Gallery; reputed to be one of the most beautiful rooms in England. www.haddonhall.co.uk 4 The terraced walled gardens are Elizabethan and cascade down to the River Wye. Recently re-designed by Chelsea award winning gardener, Arne Maynard, these make an equally important element of any visit to the Hall. (01629) 812855 5 The Hall and gardens are open to the public between 8th April and October, and for 20 days in December. Haddon is an exquisite and valuable venue for any tour company wishing to provide an intriguing insight into early England’s historical, architectural and social past. Personal photography is permitted throughout the Hall and gardens. We hope this document provides you with all the information you require to determine what tour you wish to book and a deeper insight to all that Haddon can offer. GENERAL EXHIBITIONS Exhibitions within the Hall that visitors can explore, with a leaflet, in their own time including: Shadows and Whispers, a sculpture exhibition by Nik Ramage. 1st August to 30th September daily An exhibition of mechanical sculptures by Nik Ramage, to be found throughout the public spaces of Haddon, peep into the Hall’s living past. Some are in plain sight, others are tucked into corners or nestled into nooks, all of them adjusting to their historic temporary surroundings. Just as Haddon is composed of buildings from different eras, Ramage’s contraptions are assembled from various times, contemporary and antiquated co-exist, altering our perception of the present and the future. Nik Ramage’s sculptures celebrate the uncertain and the odd and throughout Haddon you will find these misaligned machines and wonky contraptions, each comfortable with their respective quirks, running on Haddon Time. Allowing your imagination to run wild with curiosity and enjoy the freedom to contemplate the unknown and the unexpected. www.nikramage.com www.haddonhall.co.uk 6 Easter Exhibition by Dr. Patrick Harding 8th April to 1st May The intricate fifteenth-century carvings on the Nottingham alabaster reredos in the Chapel depict the Passion and Resurrection of Christ as told in the Gospels, and set the scene for this exhibition on the origins and customs of the Easter festival. We explore the traditions of Easter – from Lent to Maundy money, Haddon’s hares to Easter bunnies, simnel cakes, hot cross buns and eggs – and their links to Christian and pagan beliefs down the centuries. Dr Harding’s talk at Haddon on Saturday 15 April at 12.00 noon will delve more deeply into the history and folklore of Easter. The Hall will be decorated with Easter lilies and chocolate eggs. (01629) 812855 7 Flowers - 1st June to 30th September Floral representations are displayed throughout the rooms at Haddon Hall; on the plasterwork, frescoes, art and tapestries. This exhibition explores the symbolic value and the messages they were intended to portray; demonstrating not only the skills of medieval craftsmanship, but key points in history including royal and religious symbolism and fashion statements of the period. GENERAL HALL TOURS Lasting approximately an hour and fifteen minutes, our most popular tour explores the 900 year architectural, social and family history of the Hall Within this tour, an expert guide will explain how the family lived within Haddon, how the Tudor kitchens functioned, the interpretations of the frescoes of the chapel walls, the importance of the Tudor and Elizabethan rooms, the history of the tapestries and the importance of Haddon’s outstanding early English furniture, and much more… This tour is ideal for any visitor seeking a general and insightful overview of the history of the Hall and the family who have lived in it. Visitors are welcome to enjoy delicious food in our restaurant, roam the gardens and visit our gift shop. www.haddonhall.co.uk 8 GARDEN TOUR The ‘General’ tour of Haddon can be extended to include a tour of the award winning Haddon Tudor terraced gardens, recently re-designed by the Chelsea Gold medalist gardener, Arne Maynard Discover the history of the garden, which began life as a‘ hutyard’; an orchard and general productive area with poultry, developing into (01629) 812855 9 magnificent Tudor walled gardens. It has recently been uncovered that our gardens were designed by the celebrated Elizabethan mason, Robert Smythson. to the present day where visitors will enjoy borders awash with colour and structure throughout the season, thanks to their recent redesign by Arne Maynard. Learn about the garden’s Elizabethan revolution, in which Robert Smythson introduced the fountain terrace to sit beautifully with the Long Gallery, adding the balustrade and steps in a physical aesthetic to reflect the couch level of the Long Gallery. Jump forward A knot garden of specialist plants with Elizabethan association and a small banqueting pavilion are all available for visitors to discover. Garden Tour only: 1hr General Hall and Garden Tour: 1hr 30mins SPECIALIST TOURS A compilation of tours to cater for visitors with more specialised areas of interest Aside from Haddon’s extra -ordinarily long architectural and social history, within the walls are many fascinating and important collections and attributes that require further study. We have compiled a series of specialist tours to cater for and expand our visitor’s knowledge. These include a detailed tour of the Early English furniture reputed to be one of the greatest collections in England, the tapestries that are internationally important and extraordinary, the study of the celebrated architect Robert Smythson and his design of the Long Gallery, the house and its royal guests. We hope that these provide tour operators with an exciting and varied tour offering for their more discerning clients. www.haddonhall.co.uk 10 GLASS, GA RGOYLES & GRAFFITI TOUR As Haddon Hall developed from a semi-fortified medieval dwelling to a fine country residence over a period of 400 years, the architectural materials used – and marks of the men who used them – provide an intriguing insight in to the history of this ancient site. This tour studies Haddon’s architecture; the curious and ancient gargoyles; the signatures and mason marks of the builders (01629) 812855 11 and the poetic verse etched into the window panes, inscribed using diamond rings by the romantic Elizabethans. Haddon’s eight gargoyles were added in the 16th century by Sir George Vernon to illustrate Haddon’s status for supreme hospitality and include representations of a carver, minstrel, jester, servant, cook and musician. Out in the gardens, the tour takes visitors to see the building’s sparkling windows, made out of Venetian Bombée glass and built with deliberate opulence, an utter luxury in Medieval architectural terms from which Tudor lords and ladies would have viewed the landscape. The windows are still breath-taking and unusual for a modern visitor to see. This tour offers the visitor a chance to encounter the architecture of Haddon in a fun and unusual manner, by studying the materials of the past. Tour Length: 1hr 15mins THE CHAPEL TOUR – ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CHAPELS IN ENGLAND A study of the Chapel at Haddon and its impact on its community and worshippers Once the Parish Church of Nether Haddon, the Norman and Medieval Chapel has an extensive array of 15th century fresco wall paintings and stained glass, as well as a very rare decorative Nottingham Alabaster reredos found by the 9th Duke of Rutland in Reykjavik during his restoration of the Hall. The Italian marble effigy is a copy of the original which is located in Belvoir Castle and is of Robert Charles John Manners, Lord Haddon, the son of the 8th Duke of Rutland who died aged 9 in 1894. Moving forward into the 21st century is one of the ceramic poppies created by Derbyshire born artist, Paul Cummins and Tom Piper for the major art installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at The Tower of London’. The chapel gives us an insight into a time when religion played a huge part of everyday life. This tour explores the religious practices of Pre-Reformation man and woman, and looks at how they used church buildings. In 2015, after careful architectural study and a review of the family archives, Pevsner Architectural Guides confirmed that the Long Gallery and fountain terrace of Robert Smythson is one of the most celebrated of the early Elizabethan architects and is responsible for Haddon’s neighbouring architectural joys of Hardwick Hall, Wollaton (01629) 812855 15 Hall, Bolsover Castle, and Welbeck Abbey’s stables. This is an essential tour offering for any visitor interested in Elizabethan Architecture. Tours Length: 1hr 15mins HADDON’S TAPESTRIES TOUR Haddon Hall houses a magnificent collection of English, Flemish and French tapestries. This tour is ideal for those with an interest in historic textile Haddon is home to some of England’s most important tapestries. One of the oldest tapestries in England hangs in the banqueting Hall - a fine example of French tapestry depicting the Royal Arms of England which was reputedly presented to the Vernon Family by King Henry VIII in thanks for looking after his elder brother, Arthur. The collection also contains the 17th century ‘Five Senses’ Tapestries woven in Mortlake, commissioned by Charles I. Following the King’s execution in 1649, the Council of State ordered that these be sold and the family bought them for a mere £270! The tour not only studies these and the other wonderful tapestries that shroud the walls but also delves into the tragedy of a fire in 1925 that destroyed nearly 60 exquisite pieces. FOR 2018, WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT OUR EXHIBITION ‘SHAKESPEARE AND HADDON – THE CONNECTION UNVEILED’ In 2018, Haddon Hall will present a new exhibition that sheds light on the suggestion that Roger Manners, the 5th Earl of Rutland, was in fact the secret author of Shakespeare’s plays, exploring and examining the reasons why he has been advanced as a candidate for authorship. Intriguingly close connections between Shakespeare and the Rutland family has focussed attention on Roger Manners and the exhibition draws closer attention to the coterie of playwrights and poets surrounding Elizabeth Sidney, the Countess of Rutland. Discussion surrounds the possibility that she herself may have written a feminine response to a masculine song that Shakespeare deployed in Twelfth Night and takes a closer look at tombs and a mysterious lost painting. It also explores the Shoreditch area where the Rutland family resided in London and, more significantly, where Shakespeare’s company premiered important plays. Perhaps no co-incidence? Did Shakespeare ever visit Haddon? The exhibition will examine all the evidence. Courtesy of The Duke of Rutland, Belvoir Castle Although the Manners case shares the weaknesses of all ‘antiStratfordian’ arguments – there may not be powerful reasons for thinking that Shakespeare wasn’t Shakespeare – it plunges us deep into the fascinating world of Jacobean Court intrigue and gives much food for thought. For tour groups that are interested in this exhibition, we will be providing preview tours for the operators from September 2017.
