Nursing Home Week recognizes residents and patients in long term and
post-acute care settings, the dedicated staff who care for them, and
the value of care planning where everyone “pitches in” for optimal outcomes. Nursing Home Week started
May 12 and gave our staff and many
other facilities’ staff a reason and a
challenge to break out of the box.
From their heads to their toes, we
celebrated people, professionalism
and our patients.
“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of
leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in
fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life
was beginning over again with the summer.”
~ F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Oh, What a Tangled Web
On Friday, a man dressed as Spider-Man allegedly made off with $6,000
from a tour operator on Hollywood Boulevard, a place known to attract
various costumed people who usually pose for pictures in exchange for
tips.
As a result, Los Angeles Police officers have been detaining various men
dressed as Spidey for questioning. So far, none have been identified as the
thief. Apparently Spiderman swung into action when he saw an employee
of Starline Tours walking away from the company’s Hollywood Blvd.
location and helped himself to a paper bag filled with the cash. I mean,
obviously – because what else would a pretend super hero do?
Meanwhile, other people who dress up as superheroes -- including Superman, Batman and Catwoman -- have promised to keep their eyes out on
the Walk of Fame in hopes of capturing the rogue Spider-Man, But just
so you know, this isn’t the first time
a superhero on Hollywood Blvd.
turned out to be a super villain.

Plank Like a Pro
Are you looking for amazing abs this summer? Swimsuit woes got ya down because
you’ve got a little too much love on those love
handles? Here is the most amazing workout for
your abs you will ever find! Bonus: it sounds
super easy! Un-bonus: it’s not actually easy at
all. You might dread it. Your arms will be shaking, your legs might start quaking and after 10
seconds, you might be ready to quit. You may
have to start with doing it for 5 seconds – and
it might hurt your pride a little! Don’t worry,
you can work your way up on this one!
So here it is: Plank!
There are two ways to do it:
High Plank is basically the push up position
with your hands completely underneath your

High Plank
Thank You
Thank You to the

Your Referrals Last Month!
Fun ways to change it up –
Oblique Plank (or Side plank) – get up on your
side and have the arm that is not on the floor
stretching, lifting a weight or playing Rock,
Paper, Scissors.
Lift one foot at a time while planking high or
low.
shoulders and your feet shoulder width apart in
line with your hands.
Low Plank is where your forearms are on the
floor and your elbows are underneath your
shoulders. ALWAYS keep your back straight
and always engage your core – translation: Act
like you are trying on a swimsuit and looking
in the mirror – that thing you do where you
suck in your stomach and keep your back nice
and straight– do that while planking. If you
make sure to keep your abs engaged (or sucked
Low Plank
in) while working them out, that is what they
will remember and how the muscle will build!
If you let your stomach hang out while working out – you will build muscles shaped like a
pudgy belly.
So, in the beginning, it makes sense to just
work on building the amount of time that you
can plank. Start with 30 seconds and build every day with 10-second increments. Try going
for as long as your favorite song every morning
or while you read your daily Bible verses.
Maybe do it while checking your email – if
you can add it unsuspectingly to your day, the
elastic in your swimsuit will thank you!
You are probably thinking, “This is hard, but it
looks easy, ergo – I don’t want to do it.” But let
me explain to you the benefits! It strengthens
your back so that those crazy lower back pains
go away. It helps you stand straighter, which,
let’s be honest, makes you look much thinner.
It burns a ton of calories and builds muscles in
the most vulnerable part of your body. Basically, it’s the one-stop shop workout. If you
only had 2 minutes to get in some form of a
workout, it’s what I would recommend.
The Long Term Care Connection
“Walk the Plank” – by going back and forth
between high and low planks. This is a doozy,
but if you can do it for 2 minutes, you deserve
mega bragging rights!
High plank with a game – recruit a small child
to play patty cake with you while you are
planking. It’s hard and it will work your arms
like a cowboy works a mechanical bull…and
you’ve made a little kids day!
Give planking a try and don’t be discouraged
on the first day if you can only go for 12 seconds. Just try to add a few seconds each time!

Choosing the Right Words and Tone
to Build Patient Relationships
Words, phrases and
tone are critical in
day-to-day patient
communication.
What you say
to your patients
should be positive,
assertive, and
assumptive. You
should tell the person what they should do
based on your knowledge and expertise, all in
a positive tone. Automatically expect that the
patient will do what you suggest and follow
your instructions and make that assumption
known in your tone. This will command the
patient’s attention.
Example: “I’m going to do X and you’re going
to do Y.” Patients (customers) want you to tell
them what to do, but you must do it with the
right words, language and tone.
Stability Ball Plank
It is extremely important to pay attention to
your tone. If you’ve discovered that you need
to sound warmer and friendlier, put a smile
in your voice. It’s that easy! Just put a smile
on your face while you’re talking, whether
on the phone or in person. You can use the
old mirror technique to practice this if it feels
uncomfortable at first. You can actually stand
in front of mirrors at home so you can see how
you look when you speak.
Another excellent training technique is to
record your voice using common everyday

language to see how you really sound. Then,
take steps to fix what you don’t like.
To be effective using language for relationship
building you must use your entire body, not
just your voice and words. When you’re on
the phone, be there! Be present, focus on the
call, and tune out all other distractions. Speak
to others as if you’re their friend, like you’re
sitting in the living room with them.
