I sincerely thank you for recognizing this accomplishment. As we approach the Florida Standards Assessment window for this school year, I want to share with you a quote from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, “Correction does much, but encouragement does more.” At each of our School Advisory Enhancement Council meetings we have fifth grade student representatives provide us adults with a student perspective or insights on a given topic. In February our student representatives addressed the following, “The Florida Standards Assessment, FSA, is almost here. What can teachers and parents do to help you be prepared, confident and ready to show what you know?” Each of our student representatives shared that they understand that it is important that they take their time, check over their work, use their strategies and do their very best. Then they added that they don’t want their parents and teachers to stress about it, don’t make major changes to their routines like start sending them to bed 2 hours early, don’t talk about failing rather believe in me, encourage me, make sure I keep doing my homework and studying for tests, when I don’t understand something explain it to me, and listen to me and my concerns. What an amazing group of students with such powerful insights. Dalai Lama had the same perspective saying that a positive vision is carried out by a positive action. Although it is natural for all of us to feel some stress when faced with a challenge because we want to achieve our very best, know that giving consistent, positive support and words of encouragement partnered with the support and focus of our teachers on mastering grade level standards is what propels our students, your children, to feel encouraged and empowered to show what they know with enthusiasm. Together we can achieve more! With great pride for our CSE students and staff, Jennifer Hetland During the Test: 1. Relax! Take slow, deep breaths. 2. Follow directions. 3. Read each question. 4. Mark neatly. Erase completely. 5. Move on if you do not know an answer. 6. Review! 7. Make sure all questions are answered. After the Test: 1. Plan something fun to do after the test! Tidwell’s mAth Tip Many board games involve patterns and probability. Play games that you loved from your childhood that require your child to count and keep score. Try schoolyard games such as jump rope, hopscotch, and jacks. Games require children to use strategies and number sense to make decisions, solve problems, and develop an understanding about numbers and how to use them, and computational skills. Another important thing to keep in mind when you play games with your child you are teaching them many valuable lessons, such as: following rules, sharing, taking turns, and being a good sport.
