As we head towards the liturgical season of Easter 2016, plans have been afoot for some time to tap into the current
passion for commemoration to engage students and all members of the school community in an examination of life as
lived at Mount Anville a hundred years ago. This will happen closer to the historic date of the Rising on 20 April. In
preparation for this event, the History Department is ensuring that students are au fait with the background and 2nd
Year students have taken the lead in a team teaching initiative to brief 1st Years.
The expertise of the Society’s archivist has been engaged in the planning of an exhibition of photographs and
documentary evidence designed to stir the inner historian in all. Running parallel with this, some 1st Year students will
be recreating the flavour of the times in an exhibition of food and fashion while short plays will be performed to
further bring the period to life. Modern interpretations of Mise Éire and the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, prepared
by students, will be read at a school event on 20 April. In addition, there will be a reading of the winning entry of the
Senior Debate on 1916, some ‘surprises’ and guest appearances.
Parents who would like to participate or contribute memorabilia to the Exhibition should contact our librarian Ms. Foley

French Debating
Congratulations to the Senior French
Debating Team, Rachael
McLaughlin (Captain), Molly
Gray, Holly Healy O'Connor
and Isabelle Tierney who won their
debate against Loreto Balbriggin in the
quarter-final of the Alliance Francaise
National French Debating Competition.
The motion was, "Life is good for young
people in Ireland today", and the Mount
Anville team were arguing for this motion.
Holly Healy O'Connor also won best
speaker on the night.
The team competed at the semi-final
against St. Columba's College, and the
motion was, "Big sporting events no
longer represent anything". The Mount
Anville team were arguing for this motion.
Unfortunately we did not win, however
the team were superb on the night and
were the true winners in our eyes!
Congratulations to the team on reaching
so far in the competition. You were
fantastic.

IAMTA Applied Maths Quiz
Well done to Portia Healy O'Connor,
Ellen O'Reilly, and Kate Williams who
made it through the regional finals to
represent us in the national final on 12
March 2016 in Portlaoise.
The top 12 regional winners from across
the country battled it out to bring home
the trophy. After 4 rounds our team tied
for second place, but when the entire 6
rounds had taken place, we came in a
respectable 4th place.

Well done to the following Senior English
debaters who debated against Muckross
Park – Ria Reddy, Sarah McGee, Claire
Boyd & Ella Kearns. They opposed the
following motion – ‘Sustainable
Development Goals are doomed from the
start’.
On 4 March, the Junior Choir took part in
the Wesley Music Festival held in Wesley
College. In the weeks leading up to the
competition, we practised with Ms
Minnock every Tuesday and Thursday
morning at 7:45am. We competed
against ten other schools throughout
Ireland. We took to the stage and sang
the song ‘Hallelujah, Get Happy’. We
then watched the remainder of the
performances and nervously awaited the
judge’s verdict. We were delighted to
come in second after narrowly losing out
to Holy Child Killiney, and we were
complimented for our enthusiasm and
vocals. It was a very enjoyable day.
Classical Studies
On 25 January, 5Y physics students
attended the annual Tyndall lecture in
UCD, The title of the lecture was 'Defying
Gravity' and the girls really enjoyed the
whole experience.
Gemma McCarthy came in to talk to TY
and senior Physics students about her
career as an Engineer on 1 March . She
gave the girls a great insight into the life
of an engineer and the qualities needed
to pursue such a career.
Transition Year
The Wiz
This year, TY students performed a
musical production of The Wiz. The
enthusiastic girls dived straight in to
preparations with Ms. Minnock
orchestrating the music, Ms. Molloy
directing the actors and Mr. Rice and his
team adding a splash of colour to
everything we did.
The Ides of March Table Quiz took
place in Mount Anville on the 14
March 2016. 9 schools took part,
making up 33 teams in all. Stratford
College was the lucky winner but a
great night was had by all.
Ms. Rally and her team of budding TY
designers co-ordinated costumes. From the
Wiz and Dorothy to the Winkies and
Munchkins, all the students were decked
out in fierce style. The cast had learnt
their lines and the songs were drilled into
everyone’s heads.
Groundlings & Drama news
On our first night, the Sophie room was
filled with excitement, nerves and
anticipation. We had put in so much time
and effort, we wanted our show to be the
best that it could be.
A Groundlings splinter group went to see
'Way Beyond the Blue' in the Theatre
Upstairs, written, performed and directed
by Nessa Matthews. This gripping one
woman show brought us on a journey
through small town America, witnessing
the heartbreak and triumphs of a young
girl. We also enjoyed the luxury of sitting
with the writer in this intimate
theatre after the show to ask her about
the writing process and the inspiration for
her work.
Many 1Y and 2Y students have written
and performed dramas on the theme of
Page 3
The spirit levels never dropped during the
performances. The show ended on
Thursday night with all of us exhausted,
but delighted with our performance. As
the final curtains closed we were sad it
was over, but knew the musical is a TY
memory we will have forever.
It was a real team effort and it was a
huge success. Well done to all involved!

This year the criteria was higher than

candidates applying for this programme
met the criteria. Here at Mount Anville
we had five students who met the criteria
