OVER A HUNDRED HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL
PARTICIPATE IN ANNUAL ANTELOPE VALLEY
CLEAN UP AND SCAVENGER HUNT
On Saturday, April 26, 2008, Generation Earth, a program of the County of Los Angeles, will be
conducting the “2008 Scavenger Hunt”. This project is a cooperative effort between the County
of Los Angeles, The City of Lancaster, Antelope Valley Schools and Youth organizations with
additional support provided by Waste Management of Antelope Valley. It is being conducted
with Middle School and High School students, from area schools and youth organizations.
Who:
A Representative of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich (5th District)
County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works
150 High School and Middle School students from the Antelope Valley
Representatives from Clear Channel Stadium, home of the Lancaster Jet Hawks
What:
Student teams will be cleaning up area sites (L.A. County Public Right of Ways)
that have been overwhelmed with Illegal Dumping. Each team will be assigned
an area to clean up and to record the items found. All participants will be
recognized at a BBQ and awards ceremony at Clear Channel Stadium.

Why:
Generation Earth is an environmental education program of the Los Angeles
County Department of Public Works. The program provides educational
opportunities for students to take an active role in solving environmental
problems and understanding their actions have a real impact on the environment.
In past “Antelope Valley Scavenger Hunts” participants collected over 16 tons of
materials dumped illegally on open space areas. Items that are usually found
during these clean up events are: couches, chairs, boats, cars and car parts,
tires, TV’s, computers, paint cans, used motor oil, paint ball game materials,
plastic bags, Styrofoam, concrete, wood, bottles, cans, refrigerators, stoves,
plastic toys, clothes, and other commonly used household items.
