IOP COUNSELOR
DEFINITION:
Under the supervision of the Clinical Director, provides professional substance abuse
counseling to Regular and Intensive Outpatient clients with co-occurring mental health
and substance use disorders. Maintains linkages with other providers to ensure
comprehensive multi-disciplinary care for clients through an IOP service team. Conducts
individual, and group, and family counseling with SFMC clients under the structured
framework of state and federal law, the Counseling Code of Ethics, and SFMC evidence
based practices (EBP) and policies and procedures. Utilizes the Seven Challenges EBP
for Intensive Outpatient Treatment.

WORK PERFORMED:
1. Perform assessment on clients utilizing ASAM levels of care, a psychosocial
assessment and other evaluation tools as assigned.
2. Assist clients in development and implementation of their personalized, individual
treatment plans, which address their self-identified co-occurring treatment
issues. Client treatment plans will be executed using various treatment
techniques and therapeutic counseling skills associated with established
national treatment standards for treatment of co-occurring disorders.
3. Provide individual, group, and family therapy utilizing Seven Challenges Model,
psycho-education cognitive/behavioral methods, motivational methods, CRA,
or other therapeutic modalities as assigned.
4. Operate from a harm reduction philosophy.
5. Prepare and maintain complete case files on all assigned clients, making sure that
all required services, forms, and reports are included and complete.
6. Enforces and maintains policies, procedures, rights, rules, regulations, guidelines
and adherence to and compliance with client service delivery, confidentiality,
and ethics.
7. Complete reports to Resource Agencies as required.
8. Record client progress notes that are reflective of the treatment goals and
objectives.
9. Provides intake/admission services.

Assists other staff in management of clients in emergencies according to
SFMC policies and procedures and in accordance with training.

Responsible for creating and maintaining a therapeutic and safe environment
for clients.

Provides and coordinates referral services for clients to other agencies for
services not provided by SFMC as part of an IOP service team. Maintains

monthly contact with other providers in the IOP service team. Documents
initial and monthly contact.
Performs other related duties as required by Executive Director, Clinical
Director or Clinical Supervisor.
Must be licensed at time of hire, and continue licensure throughout
employment.
Attends all mandatory Staff Meetings/Trainings.
Participates in initial and ongoing training on the Matrix Model and other
EBP’s utilized for client service delivery. Maintains fidelity to the EBP’s
being utilized.
Coordinates with all Program staff to assure that all requirements of the
Program are being met and client services are integrated with other services
provided by SFMC.
Maintains confidentiality in accordance with State and Federal law, the
counseling code of ethics and SFMC policies and procedures.
Participates in bi-weekly supervision with Clinical Director.

Actively licensed in the state of New Mexico as a mental health/substance
abuse Counselor or Therapist, LMSW, LMHC, LPA, RMHC, LADAC,
LPAT.
Two years experience working with clients with co-occurring mental
health/substance abuse diagnoses. Providing individual and group
psychotherapy.
In the case of a recovering alcoholic/addict, he/she must have successfully
maintained a two (2) year period of uninterrupted abstinence from alcohol
and/or drugs.
Must be computer literate in order to effectively maintain compliance with
BHSD Standards and requirements for use of computerized client
assessments, data systems, etc.
Must have and maintain current, valid NM Driver’s License. Must also have
and maintain clean driving records, as well as auto insurance.
Bi-lingual/Bi-cultural preferred. (English/Spanish)
