welcome
The Goethe-Institut and the German Embassy have assembled thoughtprovoking and stimulating new cultural programs and language courses.
Herzlich Willkommen!
Now that we have settled into our new location in downtown Washington at
1990 K St. NW, the staff of the Goethe-Institut are opening the doors for an
Open House Sommerfest on Friday afternoon, Aug. 26. Join us and bring others
who love German language and culture for fun, food and drink, and a chance to
check out the space and discover what is being planned.
Issues of common concern worldwide permeate many of our fall programs. The
manmade barriers being created or proposed both in Europe and the United States
are one such example. In 2,000 Miles: Divided Land, Common Humanity, two German
artists present perspectives on the U.S.-Mexican border.
What does privacy mean to you? Artistic responses to this pressing question are the
core of the transatlantic theater project P3M5; our P3 Game Arcade provides a chance
to interact with this question in a new way.
We’re excited to announce our new Goethe Book Club, a chance to read and respond to
contemporary literature from Germany.
The affinity between art and science is the oeuvre of German conceptual artist Tim Otto
Roth, who fascinates with shadowgraphs in the exhibition Light from the Other Side.
Why is German for you? High school and college students are invited to join us for
#germanforsuccess, a day to explore opportunities for studying and working in Germany
while networking with staff from a number of leading German businesses and exchange
programs. For adults learning or brushing up on their skills, we offer German courses
at all levels during regular and intensive sessions.
Our annual Film|Neu festival Nov. 4-6 brings a stimulating weekend of the newest in
films from Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
Finally, should you encounter a very large, electric blue rooster in Washington this fall,
fear not: The reopening of the National Gallery of Art’s East Building, following a three
year renovation, introduces new gallery spaces and a Roof Terrace featuring the sculpture Hahn/Cock (2013) by renowned German artist Katharina Fritsch. Find works by
many famous German Modernists throughout the galleries.
Visit our websites, www.goethe.de/washington and www.germany.info, for more events
and to sign up for our newsletters. Bis bald!

the Mexican Cultural Institute, which is exhibiting a related show entitled Delimitations September 28, 2016 - January 28, 2017. (Opening
reception with artists Marcos Ramírez Erre and

This exhibition aims to contribute to our ongoing conversation about walls, borders and
people.
Until recently, the idea of separating territories
and peoples via manmade borders seemed an
outdated relic from the past. New political

developments, however, including the creation of barriers at the European Union’s borders, have made such controls a topic of
heated debate once again. Germany’s own
past in this regard serves as inspiration for
two German artists, Daniel Schwarz and
Stefan Falke, who take a close look at the geography and the cultural and social commonalities on the two sides of the U.S.-Mexican border.

West with the Pacific Coast’s
urbanized area between San Diego
and Tijuana, the books extend
eastward to the Colorado River
Delta and Sonoran Desert, through
the Chihuahuan Desert, and then
proceed along the course of the Rio Grande to
the Gulf of Mexico in the East.
In the photography project LA FRONTERA:
Artists along the US Mexican Border, Stefan
Falke focuses on artists who live and work
along the U.S.-Mexico border, documenting
their individual stories and their arts’ positive influence on their societies. LA FRONTERA
functions as a counter-narrative, giving a
face to the vibrant culture, cultural expression and artistic exchange of this little-known
border region which is disproportionally
portrayed by the media through the lens of
violent crime.

with aspects of control and power structures,
state authority and cartography, have been
exhibited and performed at MassMoCA in
New York, Sónar Festival Barcelona and the
Venice Film Festival.

The Other Side of the Wall
C
artoonist and author Simon Schwartz
was born in Erfurt, Germany in 1982,
at a time when the repressive Socialist Unity Party controlled the region, a
part of history he captures in his autobiographic debut graphic novel drüben!
(The Other Side of the Wall). Recently
honored with the Independent Publisher Book Award (2016), the novel tells
the narrative of the protagonist’s willingness to leave the communist side
of the Wall in search of freedom.
Based on his own parents’ painful personal experiences of reprisal and alienation in East Germany after announcing their intention to
leave for the West, The Other Side of the Wall eloquently depicts the challenges faced by those
whose State once inspired but ultimately turned on them. A new life on the western side of the
Wall meant not only freedom, but also uncertainty and the fragmentation of relationships with
family and friends.
Simon Schwartz studied illustration at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW).
He taught editorial illustration at HAW and the BTK University of Art & Design, Berlin, and
works as a freelance illustrator for several well-known magazines, newspapers and agencies.
Schwartz is the winner of several awards, including the Max and Moritz Prize (2012) and the
ICOM Independent Comics Award (2010).

PRIVACY
P3M5: Privacy on Stage
T
he Goethe-Institut, together
with European and American
partners, is currently building a
transatlantic dialogue about the value of privacy: P3M5.
The impulse for P3M5 has been the transatlantic discord over privacy and data protection.
The tensions surrounding the so-called NSAScandal in Europe, and the amazement on
this side of the Atlantic about the European
Union’s Court of Justice confirmation of the
Right to be Forgotten, a watershed moment in
privacy protection, have revealed that: “There
is no privacy - there are only privacies.” Thus,
P3M5 examines the plurality of privacy and
promotes mutual understanding on both sides
of the Atlantic.
P3M5 is an artistic approach to the plurality
of privacy. Renowned playwrights from Europe
and the US are writing five minute pieces for
reading, staging, and filming. These playlets
will be available online as short films and as
texts to be used in artistic and educational
contexts. The theater becomes the stage for
the conversation about this important topic
in the transatlantic relationship: the value
of privacy. The pieces themselves articulate
a variety of perspectives on privacy in the
digital age.
A new project website will accompany the
process of the project and serve as a source
of information and exchange.

hadows underscore the beauty of nature
and escape the captivity of their surfaces
in the shadowgraphs created by German conceptual artist Tim Otto Roth. Usually referred
to as photograms, these highly-differentiated
records on light-sensitive surfaces are created
in a process similar to an X-ray. The images in
this exhibition provide a glimpse into Tim Otto
Roth’s fifteen years of research and development in this medium.
The plants and flowers whose shadows are
captured on color slide film in the series flora
domestica, making its US debut in this exhibition, appear to be backlit or illuminated from
within, evoking the atmosphere of a window
in a Gothic cathedral. The precise placement
of a source of light in the darkroom creates a
new way of seeing space and color, underscoring the secret beauty in the shadow world
of flowers.
kulturvergnügen | fall | 2016
In sterea skia, Roth’s 3D shadowgraphs are
partially computer simulated, partially generated by red and blue lighting on Polaroid film.
With the use of stereo glasses, the spatial
shadow figures leave the pictorial plane and
step behind or in front of the surface. This
captures a core theme of the concept artist’s
work: the exploration of space in different
ways, whether by translating objects into
shadows, creating sound environments or
capturing a fascination with the nocturnal
firmament.

Washington, DC, organized by the American
Turkish Association of Washington, DC
throughout September 2016.
Driven by a long-term
policy that dates back
decades, Germany is
spearheading a transition to a renewable energy-based economy.
Yet the Energiewende
(energy transition) is
not as exceptional as
most take it for; other
countries are actually
transitioning faster to renewables. Nevertheless, it is remarkable in a way that is often
overlooked: Germany is perhaps the only
country in the world where the switch to renewables is a switch to energy democracy.
Arne Jungjohann will discuss the origins of
the Energiewende movement in Germany
and will offer evidence that the transition
to renewables is a one-time opportunity to
strengthen communities and democratize the
energy sector – in Germany and around the
world.
Arne Jungjohann is an author, consultant and

advisor for the Minister President of BadenWürttemberg and in the German parliament.

Where Is Europe Going?
A German Perspective
The European Union’s most popular achievement, the Schengen Agreement, abolished
border checks and harmonized visa policies,
thus giving citizens more freedom to choose
where to work and live. But such successes
and symbols of European unity have been
challenged by nationalism, fear of immigration and a firmly embedded perception of a
disconnect between the European Commission

Baltimore Artists in Berlin
Baltimore artists have been invited to participate in Berlin’s big city light festival. Their
works will be projected onto Berlin landmark
buildings such as the Brandenburg Tor (Gate).
The theme for this cooperation is migration,
a topic both of joint history, since many German
immigrants came to the US through the port
of Baltimore, and of presence, because inclusiveness is a cultural concern we share across
the Atlantic. Cooperation between the cities will
jointly be organized by Berlin leuchtet, Light
City Baltimore and the Goethe-Institut.

Among the highlights: Greetings from Fukushima (Grüße aus Fukushima), the newest
award-winning film by German director Doris
Dörrie. Set in Fukushima in the aftermath of
the 2011 disaster, it tells the story of Marie, a
young German woman touring the region, and
Satomi, an obstinate elderly Japanese geisha
with whom she becomes friends as they each
confront the ghosts of their respective pasts.
