Welcome to St. John XXIII
I can recall when I was a kid, some of the older folks
would talk about Sunday afternoons in the summer as a
‘time to go a-visiting.’ That meant they would stop
over at neighbors’ houses, sit under the front shade
tree, and get caught up on everything important and not
-so-important.
I’ve discovered that many people still use
summertime Sundays as a time for visiting. Now many
will visit other churches on Sunday mornings. Why?
There may be many reasons, but high on the list is that
people want to check out the Mass experience as it is
celebrated somewhere else.
Knowing that some visitors are here today with
that in mind, we want to welcome you…just as we
welcome all others who have come to be with us today.
People are spiritually hungry and they truly
want to celebrate their faith in a meaningful and
purposeful way. If you are actively (or not so actively)
looking for a parish to call your own, please continue to
consider if we are the parish that can walk the journey
of faith with you.
Reconciliation: Saturdays, 3:30-4:00 p.m.

Pastor’s Note:
THE HEART OF SUMMER
Now is the time when you will start to
hear cicadas, see lightning bugs, observe
wheat fields being harvested, and
experience what summer days are meant to be. It is a
time for outdoor sights and sounds.
As we approach the middle of summer, we find
that we want to experience it all: swim in a farm pond,
explore a new part of a metro park, or canoe on the
river. And why not?
I am always happy when I see people using
local parks or going on picnics. They are taking
advantage of what is available and enjoying a slice of
nature and history. Sadly, some people have never even
been to some of our great parks.
Undoubtedly, there will come the great
temptation to complain about summer heat or to stay
inside in air conditioning. All I can write in response is:
REMEMBER LAST WINTER!
Henry David Thoreau once wrote, “Heaven is
under our feet as well as over our heads.” I think he
was referring to the renewal of spirit that takes place
when one is connected with the natural world. Getting
closer to God’s creation can bring us closer to God, the
Creator.
These are the days to enjoy what God has given
us.
WELCOME FR. AL
We are happy that Fr. Al Ceranowski is with us this
weekend while Fr. Herb is away. Fr. Al, it is always
good to have you here. Thank you for coming and
being with us for our liturgies.
Fr. Herb will be back in the office on Tuesday,
July 8.
WELCOME THE NEWLY BAPTIZED
We joyfully welcome the newly-Baptized into our
parish family: Oliver Thomas Laughlin, son of Daniel
and Magdalena. May God watch over Oliver and help
him grow in love and grace.
FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
FAITH ALIVE!
HOSPITALITY
TEAM EVENING CREW STILL
NEEDED
If you would like to help with the
hospitality team at Faith Alive! next
year, we still need a few more people at the evening
session. The evening crew would be responsible for
refreshing drinks and then the clean-up of the coffee,
juice, and snacks. The evening session begins at 5:30
p.m. and lasts until 7:30 p.m. During this two-hour
window the team would be responsible to make sure the
coffee, water and juice are filled. The team is invited to
attend the Faith Alive! adult session at around 7:00 p.m.,
then put food and drinks away after the event.
If you are able to give about 2 ½ hours of your
time, once a month September –April, this team is for
you. Please contact me if you have any questions or if
you would like to help out. Thanks, Marla
FAITH ALIVE! REGISTRATION
Registration for Faith Alive!, our intergenerational faith
formation program, is now available on the parish
website under Faith Formation.
Although Faith Alive! is targeted for families
with children pre-school through fifth grade, we
encourage all adults to attend to continue their life-long
faith development as well as walk with the parents of our
younger children.
Faith Formation for Students in Grades 6-7,
Grade 8 and High School takes place through our Youth
Ministries programs. Registration for Impact (Grades 67) and Fired Up! (Grade 8: Confirmation) can be found in
the Youth Ministry page of our website. There is no
registration for Teen Fuel (High School).
SUNDAY MORNING PRESCHOOL
We will be offering a Sunday Morning Preschool
program for ages 3-5 (not in Kindergarten) beginning in
this September (2014). This program will be by
registration for each 6-week session. We will be having 5
different sessions over the course of the year. If you are
interested in more information, check out your recent
Faith Formation mailing or contact Marla. Registration
for the first session, September 7-Oct. 19 during the 9:45
a.m. liturgy, is currently underway. Registration is limited
to 15 children per session.
We are presently writing the lessons for the
sessions. If you would be interested in teaching, writing
or just helping with cutting things out for crafts etc. let
Marla know.
SACRIFICIAL COMMITMENT
Our offering for last weekend, June 28-29, was $13,276.
Thank you. We are in the month of July and a new fiscal
year has begun. What we learned from our recent Capital
Campaign is that we have many, many who support our
parish regularly… and we don’t rely on just a few. Thank
you for keeping this parish fiscally healthy.
ACA REPORT
Thanks to all who have already made a pledge to ACA for
this year. The Annual Catholic Appeal is the primary
diocese-wide campaign each year to support the day-today running of this Diocese. It is important because it is
the only campaign that helps run our diocesan offices,
which offer ministries (like Catholic Charities or
formation of seminarians) that no single parish could.
Thank you.
Our first ACA Report this year:
Target Amount
$39,000
Pledges/Gifts to date 84
Total Pledges/Gifts
$12,285.70
Thank you.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN CORNER:
EVERY DAY WE HEAR FROM
MORE
Although the great number of
people who are going to pledge or make
a gift, have already done so, we continue
to hear from people joyfully making
their pledge. Thanks to all who have made a commitment
to the Threshold to Tomorrow Capital Campaign. And we
know there are still people who have every intention of
pledging. Please do so in the near future.
If you haven’t made your pledge yet, please take
a few moments
Don’t forget:
 Your pledge is over three years. So instead of a onetime gift, you will be able to extend yourself over
three years and be able to increase your potential gift.
 The very future of our parish is depending on the
success of this campaign and everyone wants to be on
a winning team. While we doubt we will have 100%
participation, we truly hope that everyone will
consider the value of this parish in their lives and
respond accordingly.

SUMMER SPIRITUALITY: REFLECTION
(This is the first of three articles about ‘summer
spirituality.’ As we change gears during the summer, we
find it is a good time to pray more and differently. Fr.
Herb)
This first article on summer-time spirituality I call
“The Art of Reflection.” With this I want to suggest
praying while looking at stars, studying flowers, or
watching water flow down a stream.
People often say they can pray in nature. Often
they use this as a way of justifying not going to church.
For me it is not an either-or but a bothand. Praying in nature is a form of
prayer that can actually help someone
connect better while being part of
communal, formal prayer at Mass.
The first step is to open your
eyes and ears. Observe and listen. You
might also want to incorporate your
other senses as well: feeling the breeze
or raindrops, smelling blossoms and fresh-cut grass, and
even tasting carrots right out of the ground or berries off
the bush.
With heightened senses, we immerse ourselves
into what we are sensing. And then we stand/sit in that
observation, cherishing what it means to us. There is a
richness in walking a trail early in the morning or hearing
a nighthawk from afar. We need to savor what we are
noticing, taking it all in.
The next step is to simply bring that experience to
prayer. More often than not, I find myself in a prayer of
gratitude.
Almost everyone says he or she likes the outdoors.
Many of those seldom bother to go out. And of those who
do venture out, way too few really immerse themselves in
what they see or hear. And, sadly, of those who do get in
touch with their senses, many miss the prayer that can
flow from the experience.
During these summer days, spend some time
discovering or re-discovering the world around you.
(Next week: ‘Journaling’) – Fr. Herb

We are looking for someone
who can help clear away the
weeds that grow at the edge of
the rocks near our ponds (both the front and the back).
This may need to be done only once or twice all summer.
Please stop by and assist us…and keep the place looking
good.

SUMMER GOSPEL READINGS
People sometimes want to see the ‘big picture.’ Now that
we are back into Ordinary Time, with Lent and Easter
Seasons behind us, the Gospel readings for each Sunday
continue through the Gospel of Matthew. Here are the
upcoming readings. You will find it helpful to grab your
Bible and do a quick reading of each of these passages –
all in one sitting – to get the flow of the readings for the
next couple months. I do this often myself, and it puts
everything into perspective. -Fr. Herb

HOLIDAY WEEKEND
This past Friday was the
celebration of our country’s
Independence Day. It is a happy
time for all in this country. As we
observe this holiday weekend,
please remember to take some time
to think about what this holiday is
all about. And please remember to reflect on the real
meaning of freedom and how it is not simply license to do
whatever we want. While we rejoice that our country has
some incredible freedoms, we also accept the
responsibility that comes with freedom.
And we pray for the rights of people throughout
the world, including those in other lands where people are
often limited in many ways.
Finally, as citizens of the world, we pray that all
of us will find a new sense of community with those of
other lands and other backgrounds. We share this planet
with them. We want to grow in respect for each other .
IMMIGRATION REPORT

please remember that the United States Conference of

important
topic.

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
HIKING WITH FR. HERB
RCIA
High School students, you have only one week left to
register for the outing of the summer:
Hiking at Mohican with Fr. Herb.
(Deadline is Sunday, July 13) We
will depart at 9:00 a.m. and return at
8:00 p.m. , Wednesday, July 23.
Enjoy the hills, ravines, rock
formations, waterfalls and wildlife of
Mohican State Park! Discover God
through the lens of nature, build
friendships, and learn how to travel
the Christian path.
Plan to pack a light brown-bag lunch. The
evening meal will be a cook-out at Mohican. Besides
hiking, there will be a chance for interaction and enjoying
‘back-to-earth’ spirituality.
The fall will be here very soon (sorry if
that is not what you want to hear). And
our RCIA for those interested in
Catholicism and possibly becoming
Catholic, will be forming. If you are considering joining
the church – or even wondering what that would entail –
plan to talk with Fr. Herb. Simply set up an informal
appointment with him by calling the church or emailing
him.
GOLF OUTING FOR PARISH
The St. John XXIII golf outing will
be held on Saturday, July 26, at
Riverby. It will begin with a 1:00
p.m. shotgun start, followed by a
chicken and ribs dinner. Cost is $75
per golfer. Please plan to get a team
together. Our Knights of Columbus is
sponsoring this event for all
parishioners and non-parishioners.
There is a sign-up sheet
available after all Masses in the
atrium. There is also to be on-line registration. If you are
not a golfer and you would like to sponsor a hold, please
ENJOY THE CHURCH
PROPERTY
We want you to enjoy the church
property. Some families have
discovered the prayer area near the
east pond. Please stop by the
bench to pray or sit and read.
(Enjoy the new benches, courtesy
of a recent Eagle Scout project.)
Also we invite you to walk through and stop for a
rest in the flower garden immediately east of our building.
Enjoy the beautiful flowers there. Make a note of how
there are different flowers in bloom each week.
BEST DAY OF THE SUMMER
Each summer we have hundreds
of parishioners join us for the
Parish Picnic. You can expect:
good food, plenty of food, a
variety of food, and great
outdoor food. There will also be
swimming (with lifeguards),
yard games, music, conversations, snow cones, face
painting, and more food.
It will take place on Sunday, August 17, once
again at the wonderful backyard of Fred and Ann Eberly.
CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER
AT ST. JOHN XXIII
Join a group of pray-ers at 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Tuesday, July 8 in Roncalli Hall. Come
earlier if you wish and enjoy the quiet
time. Sr. Anne Mary will facilitate the
prayer beginning with relaxation of the
body and mind. When the body and mind are at rest, the
movement of the spirit of God can more easily be
sensed.
PRAYER GARDEN HELP
NEEDED
Perhaps you can offer one hour of help
in our Parish Prayer Garden (located just
east of the building between the two
church doors). This is totally managed by
parishioners and every bit of help can make a huge
difference.
What would you be doing? Mostly pulling weeds
or cutting dead flowers. But if you want to know more or
work along with the Garden Coordinator, please come on
Tuesday or Thursday evenings after 6:00 p.m. Sign-up
can be done online and can be found at
SAINT JOHN XXIII

HABITAT:
A FEW MORE WORKERS
NEEDED
Our parish will be participating in a Habitat for Humanity
project
this
summer,
celebrating the one hundredth
anniversary
of
Catholic
Charities in our diocese. Our
work day is planned for August 9.
Our parish is involved in two projects: 5 persons
are signed up to help with putting up siding. The other
project requires 15 workers and involves converting a sun
room into a bedroom for a grandmother who will be
taking in her grandchildren. That means we need 9
more people to sign up. If interested, please contact
Jeannie ([email protected]).
BLUE ENVELOPES
If you have received your July Sunday
offering packets, you will see there is a
new ‘blue’ envelope included. This is for
you to make your monthly commitment to
the Threshold to Tomorrow Capital
Campaign. Please use them regularly.
Of course, for those who have not
yet made their pledge, those envelopes raise more
questions than provide answers. Please respond to the
campaign at your earliest opportunity. (Pledge cards have
been mailed; there are also some available at the church
doors.) Thank you.
WHAT A DEAL!
Individuals with disabilities and special needs, their
families and caretakers are invited to a FREE event
exclusively for you. Each guest will enjoy: 1) Movie free
of charge; 2) One free popcorn; and 3) One free drink.
The movie to be shown is ‘Frozen’ (rated PG). Time and
date: Doors open at 5:45 with the movie at about 6:45,
Thursday, August 14, at Maumee Indoor Theater. You
must RSVP for this event; PRE-REGISTRATION IS
REQUIRED. RSVP with your name and number of

SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM
FOR CHILDREN
With so many families struggling to make ends meet,
many Ohio children are living in “food insecure”
households, where parents don’t always have the
resources to provide enough healthy food for their
families. During the 2012-2013 school year, 630,000
Ohio children daily received free or reduced-priced school
lunches through the National
School Lunch Program, ensuring
their healthy development and
easing the burden on their families.
When schools close for summer,
however, these families are left
wondering how to continue to
provide meals for their children. Fortunately, through the
Summer Food Service Program, children can receive
breakfast, lunch, or a snack at sites across Ohio.
To find a Summer Food Service Program in your
county call the National Hunger Hotline at 1-8663HUNGRY for assistance in English and 1-8778HAMBRE for assistance in Spanish.
LEARNING CENTER; MATERIALS ON LOSS
Please check out the items on the rack on the wall near
Room 105. These materials are there for continued
learning.
There is a section of Care Notes to help those
dealing with the loss of a loved one. In the other section
are materials for advanced learning on seasonal topics.
Please help yourself to these materials; they are FREE
and there for the taking.
FAMILIES ANONYMOUS
Are you struggling with how you
can support a loved one who is
affected by mental illness or
addictions?
If
so,
Families

Anonymous is a Twelve-Step
Program to help parents and friends to work on
themselves so that they can be better helpers to their
loved one without enabling mental illness or addiction. If
you are feeling all alone in your struggle, join us 6:00
p.m. on Wednesday nights in Room 105. The south door
of the building is open for easy entrance into the building.
