READING to LEARN

Why does 3rd Grade reading
Proficiency matter?
Until third grade, you are “learning to read…”
after third grade, you are “READING to LEARN.”
Therefore if your child does not read at grade level by the end of
third grade, research shows he/she will continue to struggle with
reading, as well as reading of math, science and history materials.
“The level of reading skills children develop by third grade
may indicate their likelihood of graduating high school.”
“Up to half of the printed fourth-grade curriculum is
incomprehensible to students who read below that
grade level .”
“Three quarters of students who are poor readers in third
grade will remain poor readers in high school.”*
Reaching Higher means we need to prepare our children for the realities of life after
high school, and that starts today! Make reading a priority in your home.

Take a trip to the library.

Listen to your child read for 10 minutes after school.

Have your child read the menu options out loud the next time you go out to eat.

Spend 10 minutes before bed each night reading with your child.
Help your Child stay on track,
take 20 minutes to read with your child every day!
