The functions of mitochondria
One of the organelles in our cells, the mitochondrion, has a very important function. It
carries out cellular respiration, which is the process through which the cell obtains all of
its energy.
Look at the ‘Cellular respiration’ presentation on the Anaya website and answer the following
questions:
1. What substances does the mitochondrion use to perform cellular respiration?
...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
2. What products result from the process?
...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
3. Where does the oxygen used by the mitochondrion come from?
...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
4. The carbon dioxide produced as a waste product in cellular respiration must be expelled
by the body since it is a toxic waste product. Explain how the body expels this substance.

5. Draw a diagram of the cellular respiration process and label the substances that the
mitochondrion uses, the resulting products and the waste products.

8. Using the scales found in each picture, calculate the size of the cells that you can see in
them and state whether they are similar in size (the size is similar if the difference is no
greater than 10 µm).
Approximate size of one of the cells in picture A: ........................................................................................................................
Approximate size of one of the cells in picture B: .........................................................................................................................
9. State the type of microscope that has been used to take each one of these
microphotographs. Explain your answer.
