Practically Picasso!

Why spend money on coloring books
when you can create your own? Mandalas
are the foundation of the popular coloring
books you can purchase at many retail
stores.
Join artist Joyce Nelson Shellhart from
Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts as she
teaches you a simple method to build your
own Mandalas to make a coloring book
with your personal style!
Newspapers:
Please keep in mind that the newspapers
that are delivered to the building are not
free. Each one has been paid for by someone in the building that has purchased a
personal subscription. Therefore, do not
take a paper that is left on the coffee table
in the lobby even, if it does not have an
apartment number on the paper. The office
purchases a paper each day for resident to
share and it will always be available in the
great room.

In addition, no animal feces, kitty litter, etc.
may be rinsed down any drains in the

NEWS
Always on October 9 th. Fire prevention
week is during the week in which October
9th falls.
According to legend, on October 8, 1871,
Mrs. O'Leary was in her barn, milking her
cow. The cow kicked over a lamp, which
started the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
The fire burned for over 27 hours. When it
was over, more than 300 people were
killed, 100,000 people were left homeless,
and over 17,000 structures were destroyed.
The Great Chicago fire sparked major efforts in fire prevention. Forty years later,
the Fire Marshall's Association of North
America (FMANA) held the first Fire Prevention Day. In 1920 , President Woodrow
Wilson proclaimed Fire Prevention Week.
The Saturday during Fire Prevention Week
is Fire Service Recognition Day.

Wonderful
German traditions now are woven into
the fabric of Upper Midwest life. In fact, 38
percent of Minnesotans reported German
ancestry.
When they crossed the ocean, they
brought hot dogs, potato salad and beer
gardens. Thanks to them, we have kindergartens, Christmas trees and fairy tales.
MN State Statutes does require that all
political candidates be provided access to
multi-unit dwellings. This means that we
must allow political candidates access to
our building. This also means candidates,
or their volunteers, have the right to go
door to door to visit with residents. We can
request that the candidates schedule a
time that they will be in the building so you
can be notified in advance of their visit;
however, candidates are not required to
schedule in advance.
In the event that a candidate does visit
Banfill Crossing during a campaign season
and you do not wish to have they visit your
apartment, we recommend that you place
a notice on the door stating “No political
candidate visitors please”.

The fall craft and product sale is
coming up on Oct 22. For those of
you who are new to Banfill, and as a
reminder to those who have been
here awhile, this is an annual event
that raises money for our Resident
Fund.
Banfill residents can reserve a table to
showcase their hand-made items, or a
product that may be selling, they can
contribute baked items to our fabulous
bake sake, or to our Made at Banfill
table which sells non-food items of
any kind. All donation help the contact Bob 763-270-0678
Directions
1. Heat oven to 400° F. On a rimmed baking sheet, toss the pumpkin with 3 tablespoons of the oil, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper. Roast, tossing once, until tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the leeks and cook, stirring frequently, until tender, 4 to 6 minutes.
Add the roasted pumpkin, 4 cups of the
broth, and ½ teaspoon salt and bring to a
boil; reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
In a blender, working in batches, puree the
soup until smooth, adjusting the consistency
with the remaining broth as necessary.
(Alternatively, use a handheld immersion
blender in the saucepan.) Top the soup with
the sour cream and croutons and sprinkle
with the paprika, if desired.
This year we are selling homemade
cookies or bars and coffee when the
sale opens at 8 am.
Those baking for the sale, please
meet in the great room on Thurs Oct
20th at 10 am to receive bags and full
information for wrapping you baked
items.
All baked items must be delivered to
the great room by Friday Oct 21 after
1 pm.
