MEDIA INQUIRIES:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In Manitoba, three quarters drink, one half gamble, one
fifth smoke pot
Pot smokers indulge most often, many daily. Gamblers play least often
TORONTO May 11 , 2016 - In a random sampling of public opinion taken by the
Forum Poll™ among 1140 Manitoba residents, three quarters have drunk alcohol in
the past year (76%), one half have gambled (53%) and about one fifth have used
marijuana or cannabis (18%).
th
One quarter of Manitobans do not drink (24%) and, among those who do, frequency
of drinking is, on average, 1.7 times a week. Most drinkers consume wine (37%)
followed by beer (29%) and mixed drinks or cocktails (15%). The most commonly
cited reason for drinking is “for special occasions” (25%), followed by “relaxing”
(16%), “being sociable” (15%) and “it goes with a meal” (12%). About one tenth
drink because it’s fun (9%), they like the taste or feel of alcohol (10%) or it’s what
they do with friends (10%).
In total, about one half of Manitobans don’t gamble (47%), and those who do,
indulge, on average, about once a week (0.9 times per week). Most commonly cited
form of gaming is lotteries, instant wins and scratch tickets (53%), followed distantly
by charity raffle or fundraising tickets (13%) and slot machines at a casino (11%).
Other forms of gaming include VLTs (6%), bingo (4%), playing cards with friends (4%)
and playing sports lotteries (3%). The most common reason cited for gaming and
gambling is “fun” (43%), followed by “getting rich” (19%) and supporting charitable
activities (14%). Other reasons include the thrill (9%), being part of a lottery buying
group (6%) or having won significant money in the past (2%).

HIGHLIGHTS:
 Three quarters have drunk
alcohol in the past year
(76%), one half have gambled
(53%) and about one fifth
have used marijuana or
cannabis (18%).
 One quarter of Manitobans
do not drink (24%).
 About one half of
Manitobans don’t gamble
(47%).
 The vast majority do not
smoke marijuana or use
cannabis (or haven’t in the
past year - 82%).
The vast majority do not smoke marijuana or use cannabis (or haven’t in the past
year - 82%), but, among those who do, toking is more frequent than drinking (1.7
times a week on average) or gaming (0.9 times a week, on average) at an average of
2.3 times per week., including one twenty fifth of adult Manitobans who smoke pot
daily (4%). Most commonly mentioned is smoking dried marijuana (57%), and no
other form of using cannabis comes close (vapourizing marijuana - 9%, smoking or
vaping oil - 8%, smoking or vaping hashish - 6%, consuming edibles - 6%).
There is little discrimination in where marijuana should be sold if legalized; just
more than one fifth say through a government agency like MLL (22%) and just fewer
suggest it should be the private sector (17%). About twice this proportion think both
public and private sector sales are appropriate (43%).

“It is interesting to note that, although 4 times as many drink in Manitoba as
smoke marijuana, the same proportion of Manitobans, about one twentieth, do
either one or the other daily," said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne Bozinoff.
