Timothy 2:8
Try to make it a habit to give God the first few minutes of
each day by simply praying, “Lord, what do You
want me to do today with all the gifts You have given me?”
Then be sure to listen for His response throughout each day.

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 22, 2013
TODAY WE BEGIN OUR TIME of reflection on Stewardship. I hope that you had a chance to take some time
to review and to reflect upon the information found in our 2013 Yearend Report which, I trust, arrived at your
homes in the mail this week. What a great testimony to the spirit of giving by so many folks in our parish! If you
have not taken the time yet to examine it, please do so this week, and you will see what I mean. It is indeed a
wonderful tribute to the people who comprise the Church of St. Cletus. As we examine our Stewardship Commitments of Time, Talent, and Treasure this year, please think about the questions immediately below, Archbishop Carlson’s letter, the Steward’s Prayer found below, as well as the words of today’s video and the link for it found on the other
side of the Time and Talent form in today’s bulletin. You will find the link there too if you wish to view it again.
Please note: This year’s Stewardship Renewal process will be a little different in that, as of tomorrow, I’ll be away
from St. Cletus until next Wednesday, Oct. 2. Today, parishioner Dawn Baker and I focused on Stewardship of Time
and Talent. Next Sunday, because I will be away and because of the visiting priest who will be here, we are taking a
week off with regard to the Stewardship theme at Mass. The following weekend, Oct. 6, parishioner Mark Riordan and
I will focus on the Stewardship of Treasure. Then the following weekend, Oct. 13, will be Commitment Sunday.
STEWARDSHIP IS A SPIRITUALITY, a way of living. It centers on three basic principles.
1. Everything we have is a gift from God. We can take credit for nothing. Everything we have and are is the
result of some gift God gave to us.
2. We need to take more time to be grateful for what we have. Society teaches us to always want more rather
than to appreciate what we already have.
3. When we start counting our blessings and being more grateful we begin to realize that not only has God
given us enough of everything that we need, but God also gives us all something to share. God wants us to
know the joy of giving.
A LETTER FROM ARCHBISHOP CARLSON ON THE TOPIC OF STEWARDSHIP:
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On Sunday, September 22, parishes throughout the Archdiocese will celebrate our 13th annual Stewardship
Awareness Sunday. Thank you for your continued generosity by sharing your gifts of time, talent and treasure.
This year’s theme – Stewardship: The Path of Faith – reminds us that the goal of Stewardship is to strengthen our
relationship with God and ultimately, get to Heaven!
Stewardship isn’t for an exclusive club limited to a few people with significant resources. Stewardship is for all
of us. We are all stewards of the many gifts we have been given by God. He expects us to develop and share our
gifts with others. No gift is small or insignificant! All gifts, given freely and with love, have immeasurable value.
Our new shepherd, Pope Francis, has invited the whole world to join him in a “journey of fraternity, of love and
trust.” This, my brothers and sisters, is a call to action. As (St. James writes), “Faith without works is dead.”
So, I encourage you to spend time in prayer, talking and listening to God. Take time to find out what He is calling
you to do. Be a good steward of your day-to-day life, your work and home life, living it in a manner that is consistent with being a follower of Christ. Be active in the parish ministries and organizations where you can provide the
most help. Finally, be generous with your financial gifts. You are responsible not only for your life, but the lives of
others as well. Your gift of treasure is important because it allows the Church to continue Her mission – spreading
the Word of God, caring for the homeless, hungry and poor and educating our children.
Stewardship is not easy, but it has tremendous rewards – Love, Peace and Joy while we are on earth and, most
importantly eternal life in Heaven! Join me on the Path of Faith in this journey of Stewardship.
May God continue to bless you and your family for all that you do. Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis
THE STEWARD’S PRAYER: Lord, make me a steward of your bounty. Where there is need, let me see it; where
there is abundance, let me share it; where there is time, let me use it wisely; and where there is treasure, let me
spend it for your glory! Oh, Divine Master, grant that I may seek not so much to have, as to give; to want, as to
share; to acquire, as to find joy and appreciation in the gifts that you have already bestowed on me. For it is in giving, that we receive. It is in serving, that we follow you, and it is in gratitude, that we find peace.
CROSS CATHOLIC OUTREACH HERE NEXT WEEKEND: In my absence, Father Ron Mzrozinski will be visiting our parish next weekend to speak at all the Masses on behalf of Cross Catholic Outreach which was founded to create a meaningful link between parishes in America and the priests and nuns working in the Church overseas in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia,
Central and South America. Cross Catholic Outreach describes Father Ron in this way: "Father Ron," as he is called by
most people, is a priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint Georges in the Caribbean island nation of Grenada.
Inspired by the life of Saint Francis of Assisi to work with the poor, Father Ron joined Cross Catholic Outreach in
2002. His life prior to working with Cross was in post-secondary education as a teacher and administrator. As an
Outreach Priest he is able to see the difference Cross Catholic makes in serving the poor in our own hemisphere.
"When peoples' lives are touched by the plight of the poor, then the cross of Christ begins to make sense in their
lives," he says. An inspiring and compassionate orator. Cross Catholic Outreach is proud to have Father Ron
preach on behalf of those we serve — the poorest of the poor.
25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today's Gospel we see that prudent
decisiveness means that we recognize
that all our choices in daily living are
really choices for eternal life. Admission
into heaven is something money cannot
buy. The only currency that has any
value to secure our entrance is that of love. As you
place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor
Box, know that your are a sign of God's love to those
who are suffering.
Eucharistic Adoration
Jesus has made Himself
the Bread of Life to give us
life. Night and day, He is
there. If you really want to
grow in love, come back to
the Eucharist, come back
to Adoration.
We need your help with the following hours: Friday
1am, 2am. Please call Jennifer @ 940-9858 or Jan @

2013 St. Cletus Ministry Descriptions
Below you will find a sampling of ministries and groups through which you can serve the Lord and His Church.
Adult Formation Committee: Members look for ways to enhance the faith life of our adult parishioners.
CRHP (Christ Renews His Parish) is a spiritual renewal experience that brings adult parishioners together in
small groups to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ and each other. You are invited to take time out to discover,
in a casual, relaxed atmosphere, how to connect more deeply your Catholic Faith with your daily life. Men and women
retreats are held here at St. Cletus.
Environment & Art Committee: Members are responsible for decorating our church. People with creative and artistic abilities are needed, along with people who have the time to set up and take down the seasonal decorations.
Eucharistic Ministry: Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are special ministers of Communion who have
the privilege of assisting the presider in the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass. Some of these ministers bring Holy Communion to the homebound. Training and practice are provided.
Funeral Luncheons: This parish service provides a funeral luncheon for friends and families of deceased parish
members. The luncheon is served in the Parish Center which can accommodate up to 150 people. Volunteers are
needed to donate food and/or work the luncheons.
Job Search Ministry provides our brothers and sisters in the greater St Charles area with the resources to conduct an
effective job search. As a chapter of Catholic Employment Network (CEN), we provide workshops on resumes, networking, interviewing, etc., and we share information on job leads and employment seminars. Our Support Group
meets monthly in the Parish Hall.
Lectors participate in a ministry of public proclamation of the Word of God in the Readings at Mass. In addition,
these ministers lead the Prayers of the Faithful when a deacon is not present and read the announcements. Training and
practice are provided. Workbooks are available to help lectors.
Legion of Mary strives to spread the Good News of Jesus and increase devotion to the Blessed Mother in our parish.
Life Teen: Life Teen® is our youth ministry program geared toward our high school teens. The teens participate in
Noon Mass on Sunday. The program also includes opportunities throughout the year for retreats, service projects, play
n' pray in the gym, building friendships, spiritual direction, leadership development and fun. Volunteers (college age
students in particular) are needed for the Core Team. Volunteers (adults/parents of teens) are also needed for Life Support, which assists our youth minister in implementing Life Teen®.
Liturgy Committee: This committee is responsible for planning the liturgical seasons of the year, the weekly liturgical celebrations and other liturgical services throughout the year. This committee also recruits and trains the various
ministers for these celebrations and assists the music director in planning the liturgical music. Interested persons are
encouraged to make a two to three year commitment.
Marriage Preparation: Trained married couples work one-to-one with engaged couples in usually four sessions
covering various aspects of Christian marriage and family life to help them be ready for this life-long commitment.
Meals in Crisis is a program to help our parishioners who are in need of meals on a temporary basis, usually two
weeks duration. Those who benefit from the service are the homebound, those recovering from illness and surgery, or
when the "meal provider" is temporarily not available.
Men's Club is open to all men of the parish. The Men's Club sponsors the Parish Athletic Program, which includes
boys and girls soccer, T-ball, basketball & volleyball. They provide a free family breakfast in the Spring and Winter.
In addition, the club provides funding for school equipment and scholarships to Duchesne High School.
Music Ministry: We welcome all those who are interested in sharing their musical and/or vocal talents with our parish community by either playing or singing at our parish's liturgies.
Nursing Home Ministry: These volunteers prepare one of the dining rooms at the Grand River Nursing Home for Mass
each Thursday morning. They also help to bring the residents to Mass and return them back to their rooms after Mass.
Peace & Justice: Our social justice committee's goal is to educate the parish concerning justice issues in our community and society at large. Members of this committee attempt to address injustices in concrete ways.
(cont’d on next page)
25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 22, 2013
(continued from the other side)
Prayer and Study: Prayer opportunities at St. Cletus range from individual prayer in front of the Eucharist (Eucharistic
Adoration) to parishioners gathering for prayer and sharing their faith at various times during the week (Charismatic Prayer
Group, Centering Prayer Group, and Our Lady's Prayer Group). There is also a Men’s Bible Study Group.
PSR: Our Parish School of Religion (P.S.R.) offers parishioners the opportunity to serve as Catechists for the 1st
through 8th year in grade school. Substitutes and aides are also needed at times. Previous experience is valued but not
required. Training, certification and on-going support are provided.
PTO: The Parent Teacher Organization (P.T.O.) strives to promote unity between home and school as well as to
support the principal, teachers, and parents in their efforts to provide quality education and formation in our
Catholic Faith at St. Cletus School. Throughout the year, the P.T.O. sponsors fundraisers primarily the Share the Profit
certificates sales and fish fries on the Fridays of Lent.
Respect Life Apostolate coordinates within our parish the respect life programs and activities of our Archdiocese.
If you're concerned about strengthening the value of human life within our society for the sake of children, including
the unborn, the elderly, the disabled, and all persons, you may want to consider joining this committee.
RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process designed to initiate and welcome new adult members into the Catholic Church and our parish community. Our emphasis is on prayer, scriptures, study and sharing the
experience of our faith. Adult initiation in the Catholic Church normally takes place each year during the Easter Vigil.
Members of the parish are invited to participate as catechists and sponsors or to assist with hospitality.
Room at the Inn: One evening a month, St. Cletus houses homeless women and children as part of an area wide
ministry called "Room at the Inn." We need volunteers to transport our guests to our parish center and back to the
Room at the Inn facility, to prepare the parish center to serve as dining and sleeping quarters, to prepare and serve a
nutritious meal, and to spend the night with them. Most importantly we welcome them as brothers and sisters in Christ.
School Volunteer: Our parish's day school is always in need of volunteers to help fill all sorts of roles, for example,
playground monitor, lunch room helper, teacher's aide, office assistant, etc.
Senior Cletes: This organization welcomes all of our retired parishioners. The meeting begins with a delicious
lunch and continues with a guest speaker or some form of entertainment.
Single Again: This regional ministry covering the St. Charles Deanery meets here at St. Cletus. Its mission is to help
those who are separated, divorced, and widowed to heal and to move on in a healthy way with their lives.
Service Sprouts provides an outlet for young children (and their parents) to participate in charitable service.
Small Church Communities: Small Church Communities provides Catholics an opportunity to experience a sense
of community within our larger parish community. These groups consist of 8-10 people who reflect together on the
readings for Sunday Mass. There are currently several Small Church Communities at St. Cletus meeting regularly.
During the Lenten Season, a wider group of parishioners are encouraged to experience Small Church Communities.
St. Vincent de Paul: The St. Vincent de Paul Society assists the poor in our community. Members care for individuals and families needing emergency assistance with food, shelter, utilities, clothing, or help with other basic needs.
Stephen Ministry: Stephen Ministry is a system through which parishioners are trained and organized to help provide Christian care-giving to members of our congregation and community. Stephen ministers bring Christ’s healing
love to people who are grieving, in crisis, or experiencing various life stresses.
St. Dorothy's Society: The primary purpose of the St. Dorothy Society is to beautify the grounds of St. Cletus by
planting and maintaining the trees, shrubbery and flowers. Cutting the grass and trimming the trees and shrubs are also
part of the society's responsibilities.
Stitches for Life: relies on fabric/yarn donated by parishioners. With this our members make various items for the
El Salvador mission, Foster/Adoption group and nursing home. We also make Prayer Shawls.
Additional opportunities to work with children: Sunday Preschool of Religion and Children's Liturgy
of the Word: These Sunday morning programs bring our faith alive for children from preschool to grade 3. The
groups meet with their age level during or after the 10:00 AM Mass to do age-appropriate, faith-based activities.

this important ministry please contact Mary Howle at

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 22, 2013
TODAY, September 22, St. Cletus will host Father
Laurence Kriegshauser, OSB, who will speak to us
about his new book, Praying the Psalms in Christ.
Today, Sept 22, 7:00, in St. Cletus Church, 2705 Zumbehl, Fr. Laurence, a
Benedictine monk, will review his book and offer signed copies afterward. In
the book, he examines the Christian praying of the Psalms, including contemporary research on the Psalms. Working from the Hebrew text, he offers
a verse by verse commentary on each of the one hundred fifty Psalms. The
book combines modern scholarship on the Psalms with the act of prayer and
helps Christians pray the Psalms with greater understanding of their Christological meaning. One of many reviews stated: “In this book, Fr. Kriegshauser has given us a form of reading the Psalms that runs very close
to that practice of prayer and meditation, where the Bible is read
prayerfully, as a form of prayer. His prayerful study is made all the more
rich by the abundant cross references to places in both the Old and the
New Testaments that add richness to the text. The result is an informative and spiritually nourishing companion to reading the Psalms” --Lawrence S. Cunningham, University of Notre Dame. Fr. Laurence, native St. Louis, retired from teaching
in the Priory, is now an assistant professor of the Old Testament teaching at Kenrick–Glennon Seminary.
