Fishfingers out, Squid and Lobster in for UK kids!
Gone are the days when fishfingers and chips were the
only seafood children in the
UK ate! According to research
unveiled by Seafish, more
and more children aged
between seven and eleven
are trying new types of seafood- 40% have tried crab,
33% have tried squid and
20% have tasted lobster.
That’s not to say that the
more commonly eaten fish is
forgotten - 86% of children
still eat cod and 80% tuna as
a favourite fish dish, with
salmon and haddock not far
behind, so the traditional fish
meals are still in abundance.
Interestingly despite the increase in tasting new types of
seafood, it is still of some
concern that the recommended two portions of
seafood a week are only
eaten by 24.3% of children in
the 7-11 age bracket. Also
amazingly 30% of children in
the UK have never once indulged in fish and chips at the
seaside.
Seafish launched the release
of this research in conjunction with the start of their
student chef-led education
programme which will bring
50 groups of young chefs
from around the UK to
Billingsgate
fish
market
where they will learn about
the processes involved in
bringing seafood to the plate
from catching, filleting, trans-
Page 2
porting to cooking, it is hoped
the young chefs will be
inspired to champion seafood
in their upcoming careers. Mel
Groundsell Corporate Relations
Director at Seafish had this to
say,
"It's fantastic to see kids consuming different varieties of
fish. The health benefits of
eating more fish are welldocumented - and each type of
fish provides a different culinary experience and a unique
flavour. We'd like to help grow
that enthusiasm and get more
people eating more fish more
often.
"Through
our
education
programme we're aiming to
motivate both parents and
children by celebrating and
exploring the variety of fish
available and inspiring the next
generation of chefs to broaden
their culinary horizons and help
expand family tea time
menus."
There is more information
about this and other children’s
seafood programmes on the
Fish is the Dish website.
Seafish’s
education
programme also comes as Youngs
announce the launch of their
Funky Fish Kitchen range of
seven new fish dishes four of
which are frozen, to be sold at
ASDA. Until now the Funky Fish
Kitchen range has only been
available in refrigerated option
so the hope from Youngs is
that the frozen fish will open
up even more possibilities to
encourage consumers to eat
the two recommended portions of fish per week.
Marina Richardson, Marketing
Controller at Youngs Seafood
Ltd said ‘“We’re delighted to
be launching the Funky Fish
Kitchen into Frozen. These
new fishcakes and fish fingers
give a Funky Fish twist to
freezer staples, with exciting
and innovative flavour combinations. The range has been
successful in attracting new
consumers to try different fish,
and now is the natural time to
take what we’ve learnt in
chilled and expand the range
into frozen too. We’re excited
to be bringing funky flavours
and fun, using natural fish, to
the freezer with ASDA.”
The NHS have issued official
guidance that two portions of
fish should be eaten by everyone per week, one of those
portions being oily fish. There
is comprehensive guidance
and advice on their website.
Support for eating more fish
per week, and big name
brands taking opportunities to
showcase different ways to
eat seafood will surely only
serve to positively affect the
fishing industry, especially in
light of the various festivals
and programmes which further highlight the benefits and
variety available from eating
seafood. Which leads us neatly on to Seafood Week on
page three!

Funding Awarded by SDFID to Local Businesses!
Ten businesses have been
awarded money by the
new South Devon Fishing
Industry
Development
Fund. The grant funding
was available for fishing
industry projects between
Plymouthand Brixham to
help
grow
business
turnover, promote local
fishing, increase sales of
seafood and sustain local
jobs.
The awarded applicants
have been diverse and exciting. The Nathan brothers
who have until now fished
for pollock, bass and skate
using line and rod and
selling through Brixham
market, now have match
funding to grow the business by adding line caught
squid. They are using their
money to assist with the
purchase of radar equipment for their vessel the
23ft Aquafish.
Mark Taylor, a one day a
week fisherman will now
fish full time from October
2015 thanks to the funding
match which will help him
to buy the lobster pots,
backlines, net haulers, nets
and shooting rail that he
needs.
Justin Weeks is using his
awarded funding to help
him purchase a net flaker
so that he can expand his
business into catching dover sole on top of the bass,
Pollock and mackerel who
currently catches by line
and rod.
A scallop nursery project
based in Torbay has
received funding thanks to
SDFID. Full size Torbay
caught scallops are sent to
a hatchery in Norway
where they are bred from
and when the young have
reached 40mm they are
placed on the Torbay
seabed and harvested by
local fishers.
Experienced diver Frazer
Pugh has returned to Devon from Australia to start
new business The Hand
Picked Scallop Company,
based at Brixham harbour.
His funding will go towards
obtaining a fishing licence
and equipment for the
boat.
Dartmouth based Dean
Corbett is a line and rod
fisherman who sells direct
to Brixham Market. He has
received funding to increase the chilled storage
facility on his boat the Deborah Jane.
Mary Roberts of Everam
Fish and Shellfish in East
Prawle received funding to
create
a
new
fish
processing unit so that she
can offer the fish her
husband and other boats
catch, either filleted or
whole, to the local commu-
nity.
Retiring
Navy
Officer
Anthony Heinemann has
decided to spend his retirement starting a new rod
and line fishing business in
Plymouth. The SDFID funding he has been awarded
will allow him to purchase a
line hauler and other
equipment for his boat the
Sally Rose.
Newly awarded are applicants Thomas Mills with
the Crab Start Up Business,
and Christopher Puncher
who has been given money
for the development of a
Commercial Fishing Operation.
Articles about each of these
businesses will be released
in the coming weeks on
social media and on the
South Devon Fish website
www.southdevonfish.net.
The funding awarded has
been for 50% of the project
costs match funded, and
with free business advice
available to each applicant
to help them with the pro-
cess and their enterprise.
This funding has been
made available for the
South Devon Fishing Industry Development Project
from the Coastal Communities Fund.
