Season 2016-2017 EMOTIONS IN THE SPOTLIGHT The Opera and Ballet Season 2016-2017 2016 2017 will open with a symbolic title for the Teatro Regio: La Bohème,, of which we celebrate the 120th anniversary of the first performance, which took place on our stage. For the occasion, we have commissioned a new production to Àlex Ollé of La Fura dels Baus, Baus, the collective that has revolutionized the very way of understanding anding the work, confident that this staging will create a reflection on the contemporary world. New business brings us into the Paris suburbs, contemporary melting pot, a place of encounter and clash of cultures as well as today's refuge of bohemian. Irina Lungu and Giorgio Berrugi will be a Mimi and Rodolfo-day; Rodolfo to conduct the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Regio will be the musical director of the Theatre Gianandrea Noseda,, now globally recognized interpreter of the Italian musical heritage and beyond. d. The show attracts the participation of the “Friends of the Regio”, the Association that the first example in Italy, contributed to out the stand. Always Noseda will continue its investigation with Puccini’s Manon Lescaut,, another title closely linked to our ur theater which hosted the world premiere. Tradition and modernity have always been important values for the Regio, a belief that in this season we practice working on two titles Puccini. So, in a contemporary Bohème and almost expressionist, we draw near ne our elegant and classical Manon,, directed by Jean Reno,, with two major singers on the international scene: María José Siri and Gregory Kunde.. The two titles also emphasize the profound link between Puccini and Turin, the city in which he chose to debut two of his most important works, and where he collected his first successes. In a season that has many dialectical ideas, we propose another comparison: exoticism and realism, France and Italy. By Camille Saint-Saëns Saint Saëns we present Samson et Dalila in a new and d exciting stage that we have co-produced co produced with the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing, directed by Hugo de Ana and conducted by Pinchas Steinberg. Samson et Dalila is the first Italian-Chinese co-production production of an opera and it is part of the international protocol that the Regio has signed with NCPA. The sensuality and exoticism translated into music by the genius of the French composer, serve as the backdrop to the true passion that ignites jealousy, in the masterpiece of Ruggero Leoncavallo: Pagliacci.. For this title director Gabriele Lavia, for the first time at the Regio, presents a setting in Italy, during the 40’s . The conductor for this production is Nicola Luisotti,, joined by a cast of exceptional soloists such as: Erika Grimaldi, Grimal Fabio Sartori, Roberto Frontali and Juan José de León. León. Stage, costumes and video by Paolo Ventura, one of the most important photographer in the contemporary art. In the 2016-2017 2016 Season the three thematic strands inaugurated in the current season will come to the fore: the Baroque Opera, the Janáček-Carsen Carsen trilogy, and the Musical. The Regio aims to recovery the ancient musical heritage and to do so, this year, the focus is on the greatest Baroque composer that Italy has had: Antonio Vivaldi, Venetian by birth but ‘adopted’ by Turin (maybe not everyone knows that in the National Library of Turin is kept the largest collection of music autographs of the “Red Priest”). In this season, one of his operas will be on stage for the first time in Turin: The Coronation of Darius, 300 years after its first performance. Ottavio Dantone conducts the Orchestra of the Regio. Dantone is a harpsichord player and internationally renowned director, who will lead a cast of exceptionally talented players of the baroque repertoire such as: Carlo Allemano, Delphine Galou, Sara Mingardo, Roberta Mameli, Veronica Cangemi. This production also relies on the collaboration with the Accademia Albertina of Turin. The direction is by Leo Muscato, winner of the Premio Abbiati 2013. For the second part of the Janáček-Carsen project, we are staging, for the first time at the Regio, Katja Kabanova, an extraordinarily interesting female character, rebellious against petty social conventions, bigots and authoritarianism. Janáček has created an opera of deep musical depth. The tragedy of Katja’s loneliness is outlined with almost expressionistic music that leaves glimpses of intense lyricism when it comes to penetrating the beauty of the soul of the protagonist. The subject has deeply affected the director Robert Carsen who has created scenes with deep poetic value, in which water, a pure and transparent element that pervades the whole scene, is a metaphor for the protagonist. The Orchestra and Chorus of the Regio will be conducted by Marco Angius , reference manager for the contemporary repertoire, who will lead a cast of specialists in the interpretation of the work of Janáček. After the Musical Cats, we will stage the famous West Side Story, Leonard Bernstein’s masterpiece, eight performances with original choreography and direction by Jerome Robbins. These are the only Italian date of the international tour. The rich and engaging score Bernstein will be performed by the Orchestra of the Teatro Regio conducted by Donald Chan: conductor, pianist and composer, among the best of Bernstein’s opera performers. The musical was first staged in 1957. The ‘West Side Story’ is the “Romeo and Juliet” of the twentieth century, coloured with jazz rhythms and memorable melodies such as Maria, America, Tonight, Somewhere. The famous film version, with the wonderful Natalie Wood, of 1961 won 10 Oscars. Another pair of lovers, Aurora and her Prince, will take the stage of the Regio in one of the most famous and romantic ballets of Tchaikovsky: The Sleeping Beauty, choreographed, for the Italian premiere by Nacho Duato for Staattsballett Berlin. It is a company whose origins date back to 1742 and which, over the centuries, has been able to innovate by offering masterpieces by Van Manen, Bejart, and Panov. From fairy tale we then turn to the fabulous The Magic Flute by Mozart with the Regio’s own settings and directed by Roberto Andò. The Magic Flute is the relationship between the sacred and the profane, it is the metaphor of a journey of initiation to reach universal love, an opera to be appreciated, which is why we have scheduled ten performances, in order to offer to as many potential viewers the opportunity to discover or rediscover it. The title is given to the director Asher Fisch, an expert connoisseur of german repertoir. The cast has: Markus Werba, Ekaterina Bakanova, Antonio Poli and Olga Pudova. The delicate balance between good and evil present in Mozart takes a different turn in the hands of Verdi, who, with Macbeth, delves for the first time in the dramatic power of Shakespeare, touching new heights of his musical theatre. Macbeth will close the Opera Season in a new production, co-produced with the Teatro Massimo of Palermo. The show is entrusted to Emma Dante, director with a strong Mediterranean temperament - for the first time at the Regio - who will offer a visceral, dense and deep exhibition. The Orchestra and Choir, key elements in the whole Opera Season as well as in the concerts, will be conducted by Gianandrea Noseda who continues his journey of research and deepening of Verdi’s opera. Our ‘Lady’ will have the deep sound and haunting timbre of Anna Pirozzi. As for the significant international events, we have received important invitations: from Lugano to Geneve, from Edinburgh to Muscat The work has an essential role in breaking down boundaries of a world that is often called upon to represent. It will therefore be a season in the sign of the dialectic, in balance between innovation and repertoire, including classical fare together with other by the acute contemporary analysis; ten titles, half of which are new productions created by Theatre. This wealth of calls between a title and the other, will transform the theater into a large and exciting stage in the world in which, from Vivaldi to Bernstein through Mozart, Verdi and Puccini, every spectator will be able to dialogue with the great masterpieces of the Opera and Ballet.
