Guide to downloading e-books using Freading: Getting Started! Freading Ebook service is a program used by the New Haven Free Public Library to provide downloadable e-books to library patrons. Freading uses a token system that patrons can exchange for e-books. Patrons are given a certain number of tokens per week. Unused tokens roll over each week for a four week period. Book downloads cost 4, 2, or 1 token(s), depending on the value assigned by the publisher. In order to access the e-books, users need a library card and an Adobe ID. An Adobe ID can be created here: Adobe ID Compatible Devices: Computer running Windows or Mac OS iPhone and iPad Most Android Tablets or Phones: Kindle Fire Nook Computer running Windows or Mac OS: Using a computer running Windows or Mac, books can be downloaded directly from the Freading website. click “Login” and enter New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL). Enter your library card number. You will then see the number of tokens available to you and you can begin downloading books. iPhone and iPad: In order to download books for their iPhone or iPad, users need to access the Freading App. It is available through the Apple App Store for the iPhone and iPad. Once the App is downloaded, find your library using the “Store” feature. You then click “Login” and enter New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL). Enter your library card number. You will then see the number of tokens available to you and you can begin downloading books. Android Tablets or Phones: Most Android devices are compatible with Freading. Some examples include: HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy, Toshiba, Acer, Asus and Xoom. Android device users will need to download the Freading App through the Android App Market. Once the App is downloaded, find your library using the “Store” feature. You then click “Login” and enter New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL). Enter your library card number. You will then see the number of tokens available to you and you can begin downloading books. Kindle Fire: Users can also download the Freading app for Kindle fire. Go to the browser on your Kindle Fire and type in m.getjar.com. After you find the GetJar app, tap to download it to your Kindle Fire. Tap the back arrow on the screen to go back to browse the GetJar store. Search for and download the Freading app. Install. The Freading app will show up on the home page of the Fire now. You may need to press the sync/refresh button, which is in the first menu after pressing the settings gear icon. Use Freading through the browser (go back to your library's Freading site) and download into the Freading app, or from within the app itself by tapping the 'store' icon. Once the App is downloaded, find your library using the “Store” feature. You then click “Login” and enter New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL). Enter your library card number. You will then see the number of tokens available to you and you can begin downloading books. *For more detailed instructions, please go to: NHFPL Freading Nook: Nook devices that support Freading include the Nook eReader and the Nook color. Nook users will need to have Adobe Digital Editions installed in their computer and authorized with an Adobe ID. Open the Digital Editions on the computer and connect the Nook to the computer using the USB cable that came with the Nook. Digital editions will recognize the device and ask if you would like to authorize the device with the same Adobe ID as the computer. Select Yes and the Nook will appear as a bookshelf in Digital Editions. You will now be able to drag books downloaded from Freading, opened in Digital Editions to the Nook.
