PTC+ introduces two new courses
The past few years the Agricultural sector faced a lot of changes: profits per unit decreased so farmers
were upscaling or looking for alternatives. In the course “Discover new income sources at your farm”
participants will get acquainted with a vide range of successful farmers’ initiatives.
In the course “Your farm shop” the partipants will acquire new attitudes, knowledge and skills about
direct selling from farm shops. One of the final topics will be to convert ideas into concrete plans for the
enterprises of the participants.

Afaf Elshereef from Egypt attended
the short course on Feedstuffs and
Feed formulation at PTC+ in Barneveld.
She says: “in this course I learned how
to prepare feed meals for ruminants,
poultry and pigs using software programmes, which are very helpful for
my future researches. Also visiting
poultry farms was very useful: it gave
me further insights and exciting ideas
for my future research.”

In June the 4 weeks course on Integrated Pest
Management took place at PTC+ in Ede. A course
which focuses on the practical aspects of crop
protection balancing biological and chemical
control. Participants learn how to upgrade their
managerial and technical skills.
This year’s group consists of people from Afghanistan, Kenya, Ghana, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan
and Zimbabwe. Very special is that three ladies,
junior trainers from the Desert Development Center (DDC)in Cairo joined this course as well in the
framework of a NICHE project called: Supporting
a best Practice National Centre for Agricultural
Technical Training in Egypt.
The project, which started in 2011, is aimed to
establish a sustainable and practice oriented
agricultural training centre at the DDC (part of
the American University Cairo) for skilled labor,
meeting the needs of employers and small farmers
in Egypt. By attaining this objective the project
will contribute to the delivery of adequate trained
human resources for the agricultural sector, which
will be beneficial for the whole agricultural sector
in Egypt.
In order to achieve the goals DDC senior trainers
were in the Netherlands for a Training for trainers
course, which consisted of one week preparation
and one week delivering training themselves.
They gave tractor driving lessons to the participants of the Integrated Pest Management course.
The Egyptian senior trainers were assisted by
Dutch students, professionals of Dutch agricultural mechanization companies who are studying
and working at the same time (a combination of
one day study and four days working). These Dutch
students were assessed on their command of technical English. In this way three courses were integrated. Of course all was supervised by the PTC+
trainers.

Saying goodbye...
Agreement on international training programmes
between John Deere and PTC+
On May the 30th the participants of the Animal Feed course, a 3
months course, which can be combined with the 6 months course
on Pigs and Poultry got their diplomas. The group was very diverse,
coming from nine different countries in Asia and Africa. The ceremony was attended by the mayor of Barneveld, representatives
of embassies, the Dutch Poultry Center, the World Poultry Science
association, contact families, guest farmers, PTC+ staff and guest
lecturers.
On the 25th of April Ms. Stefanie James (manager International
Training John Deere) and Ms. Jenny van den Bovenkamp (PTC+) signed an agreement on international training programmes.
With the signing of this agreement PTC+ arranges all training programmes for the John Deere dealers and importers in 47 countries. At the
same time new training the trainer programmes have been set up to
transfer the latest knowledge and technologies to the local trainers.
The Animal Feed course is designed to teach the participants in a very
short time frame how to set up and manage a feed mill. Topics such as
feed mill designs, technology, efficiency, working schedules, quality
control, calculations, marketing, relations management, HR management, etc. are being addressed.
In the last few weeks several training programmes have already been
conducted in Romania, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Subjects like
operation and adjustment, overview, diagnose interference play a
central role in training programmes.

Apart from practical and theoretical lectures at the PTC+ feed mill,
there was quite some input from the Dutch industry: Agrofeed Lunteren (visit to the poultry farm and feed mill), Selko (training about
mycotoxines in raw materials and feed), Nutreco (demonstration
toxinebinders), Nutrilab (training about the proximate or Weende
analysis), LEI (part of Wageningen UR – conducted a training about
business models).

Johan Brinks, trainer at PTC+ says: “An huge challenge! By uniting our
knowledge we can provide the best training programmes” For John
Deere it is very important to have the best technicians all over the
world. By working together with PTC+ they can take advantage of the
best practical trainers, have the expertise and execution united at one
place, have short and quick communication lines and on top of that
John Deere can easily integrate projects.
Now the medium of instruction is English, but in the future PTC+ would
like to conduct the training programmes also local languages. Therefore PTC+ is looking for trainers who speak the local languages and have
the right expertise.
Tagrid Eltahir Hassaballah Ali Dinar from Sudan was in the rare position to not only attend the 6 months course on Dairy Husbandry
and Milk Processing at PTC+ in Oenkerk, but consequently also attended the course on Poultry Husbandry and Animal Feed at PTC+
in Barneveld. During her 15 months stay in the Netherlands her
horizon was not only broadened by the lectures, the practical work
and the numerous excursions to farms and companies, but she also
made friends who came from different countries in Asia and Africa.
And so she learnt from them in a professional way as well, which
problems they encountered and how they dealt with them.
It is hard to believe that the goodbye
we said to Mrs. Eleen Naluai Seki was
the final goodbye, since she passed
away in a car accident in Kenya on
the 27th of June. She was warm and
caring and a proud member of the
Masai tribe.
She is very excited to go home to bring all knowledge gained into practice in her home area Darfur. As an extension officer her ambition is
to give local small scale farmers a better life by informing them both
about dairy as well as the poultry farming aspects.
The PTC+ staff wishes to express our
heartfelt condolences to her beloved
ones and her tribe.
Recently an alumni association of various Dutch institutions was founded in Sudan in cooperation with the Dutch embassy. They are using a
private Facebook group as their platform.
