Class Policies
Class attendance is imperative. In order to make the most progress in English you must be one time and ready to
participate. You are fully responsible for all the material that was covered in that class.
The eight classes and your marks will be divided into the following categories:
● Pronunciation
● Listening comprehension
● Writing expression
● Grammar
● Vocabulary
● Reading comprehension
● Speaking
● Final Exam
In this class you will receive 8 marks.
Mark 1: Pronunciation (executed on March 25th, results given on April 1st) - 10%
Mark 2: Listening Comprehension (excuted on April 1st, results given on April 8th) - 10%
Mark 3: Written Expression (executed on April 8th, results given on April 15th) - 10%
Mark 4: Vocabulary and Idiom translation (executed on between April 8th and 15th results given on April 29th - 10%
Mark 5: Grammar and Vocabulary review Quiz (executed on April 29th, results given on May 6th) - 10%
Mark 6: Participation and Teamwork (executed on May 6th, results given on May 13th)- 10%
Mark 7: Speaking (Executed on Mar 13th, results given on May 20th)- 10%
Mark 8: Final Exam (executed on May 20th, results given on May 27th) . - 30%
Total: 100%
All documents given in class are also available online on the day of the class, after the lesson. No
documents will be available before the date of the class.

March 25th Class 1: Pronunciation: Long and short vowels; /h/; /th/; syllable stress
● Pronunciation class pair work. Using a short scene, the students will be given a short script from the film Tootsie to
prepare in class and preform it in pairs. (script will also be available on my website for students to download)
● Mark 1 for in-class work: Students are marked on their pronunciation as they deliver the scene in the second half
of this class.
April 1st Class 2: Listening Comprehension
● Mark 2 for in-class work: Listening comprehension questions on NPR 100 Radio Report: The Doors. Answers are
collected to be marked.
● In-class groups-of-three discussion: What is the soundtrack of your life? Brainstorm for next week's in-class
writing assignment. Students can request songs from my Ipod to listen to and comment on, if they wish.
● Pronunciation marks from previous class are given at the end.
● Homework: Prepare to come to the next class to write an essay on the soundtrack of your life. (handout with main
points from the listening exercise and the soundtrack assignment will also be available on my website for students
to download)
April 8th Class 3: Written Expression; Listening/speed reading Comprehension
● Mark 3 for in-class work: writing assignment: What is the soundtrack of your life? A 20-minute essay. Essays are
collected to be marked. Students are marked on Content (5 points), Grammar (5 points), Vocabulary (5 points)
Organization (5 points) for a total of 20 points.
● Watch an episode of the Apprentice (a famous competition in the US) to prepare for the speaking work next week.
● Listening Comprehension marks from previous class are given at the end.
● Homework: Translate the list of vocabulary and idioms from the Apprentice handout. (Vocabulary handout will
also be available on my website for students to download)
April 15th Class 4: Reading/listening comprehension / Vocabulary and speaking
● Mark 4: Vocabulary homework collected to be given marks next class
● A second episode of the Apprentice with English subtitles.
● Pairs speaking exercise – student debate on the who will be the winner on the show. and vote.
● Watching the rest of the episode to find out the results of the competition.
● In-class writing assignment from last class marks given at the end.
● Homework: handout given on important grammar and vocabulary points to study for the quiz on April 29th.
(handout will also be available on my website for students to download)
April 22nd: Vacation. Homework: study for the quiz using the handout available online.
April 29th: Class 5: Grammar and Vocabulary / Reading comprehension and discussion using lyrics
● Mark 5: Grammar and Vocabulary quiz collected and marks given next week.
● Music Lesson – gaining vocabulary from the lyrics. Inferring meaning through song lyrics.
● In groups of three: a questionnaire is handed out for which the groups to discuss and interpret the lyrics of
different songs. The teacher goes around to each group to hear their opinions. Students will not be asked to speak
individually, but in groups (workshop style). This will prepare them for the larger speaking exercise next week.
May 6th: Class 6: Speaking
● Group Speaking activity. Debating on a real American scandal. Class is divided into 4 teams.
● Mark 6: Marks are given on participation, and teamwork.
● Homework: choose a quotation from a famous musician (quotes provided in class) and come prepared to speak for
5 minutes max, on that quote. (quotations will also be available on my website for students to download)
May 13th Class 7: Speaking
● Mark 7: Speaking on a quotation. Students have 5 minutes each and are marked on Content (5 points), Grammar
(5 points), Vocabulary (5 points) Organization (5 points) for a total of 20 points.
May 20th: Class 8: Final Exam. Short Questions and Essay Questions.
● Mark 8: Final Exam
