I. Reading Journal Assignment
Directions: As you read, you must complete a journal entry for each of the 6 sections in The Scarlet
Letter. Each journal entry must provide an analytic overview of one section, including a set of notes
taken during reading and a brief essay written after reading the section:

Characterization and character development (inc. moral/spiritual development)

Key images, motifs, and symbols (address both literal and figurative purposes)

Write an essay of approximately 1-2 typed pages in which you discuss the main purpose of this
section of the novel.
Discussion Question Responses
The questions are not required, but may help you focus your reading. You may answer as many
or as few of the questions as you wish. If you incorporate these responses into your journals, it
is better to err on the side of answering fewer questions more thoughtfully than answering more
questions superficially.
Extra Credit: Students may submit an annotated copy of the text for extra credit. Texts submitted for
extra credit must be thoroughly and meaningfully annotated; books that are superficially marked or
incompletely annotated will not be considered for extra credit.

Completion Check 2: All 6 entries will be due on Wednesday, December 21
Final Submission: The journal will be collected for full assessment on Friday, January 6
II. Group Presentation Assignment
Working in groups as assigned, plan and present a critical overview of one section of The Scarlet Letter.
The presentation should use some kind of visual aid—this can take the form of a handout, a powerpoint
presentation, or notes written on the chalkboard before class. Presentations will occur after the class has
finished reading and discussing each section of the novel, so you should be dealing with an informed
audience who can be involved in discussion. Presentations should include the following elements:
1) Summary: Quickly review the setting of the section and its significance, as well as the basic order of
events, making special note of conflict development and plot shifts.
2) Character Analysis: Review the ways in which this chapter develops our knowledge of individual
characters and expands their role within the story. Remember to pay close attention not only to
inter/intrapersonal development, but to moral and spiritual development, as well.
3) Key motifs and images: Review any items that are given special significance, either through
repetition or narrative emphasis of some kind. If your section further develops a motif from another
section, be sure to avoid mere repetition of someone else’s presentation.
4) Narratorial tone: Offer an interpretation of the narrator’s tone toward the people, events, and objects
you have already addressed. Use specific textual material to illustrate your interpretation.
5) Close Reading Exercise: Select a sentence from the text that is particularly illustrative of a key
motif, tone, or situation in your section of the novel. Discuss both the content and the structure of this
sentence as they relate to the larger issues in this section of the novel. Class discussion is especially
encouraged in this part of the presentation.

Final Essay – Close Reading of a Passage
Due Dates: Thursday, January 5 (rough draft); Monday, January 9 (Final Draft)
What is a close reading essay?
A close reading essay is a detailed study of an entire short work (such as a short poem) or a passage
of prose or verse that is part of a longer work. This type of essay takes only the selected passage as
material for analysis.
The content of a close reading essay is determined by the content of the passage—if the passage
describes a person, for example, you must discuss character, with an emphasis on what techniques
within the passage develop the character. The passage might also develop an idea, introduce or
develop a conflict, or introduce the reader to a significant symbol; it is up to you to focus on the
textual matters that seem most significant. In short, the content of a close-reading essay is
variable; your passage dictates your argument.
Purpose of a Close Reading
The general idea is simple: If you can analyze a paragraph in a book, you can analyze the entire
book. But the challenge of a close reading essay goes beyond simply dealing with the content of
the text. It requires you, as a writer, to control your desire to discuss the “big picture” and to
maintain a focus on the small details of the text. References to the world of the novel beyond your
selected passage must be few, brief, and highly purposeful.

o Print out a copy of the passage for close reading. Number the lines and create a formal
annotation that will be submitted with the essay.
o Use MLA in-text citation style

o Length should be about 2-3 pages; material past 4 pages will not be read
