MDP Honors Mexican-Americans, Celebrates
Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo Marks Mexicans’ Defeat of French in 1862
LANSING – The Michigan Democratic Party today is encouraging all Michiganders to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and
honor the accomplishments and traditions of Mexican-Americans.
“Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of hard work and determination,” MDP Chair Mark Brewer said. “Today, we celebrate
the Mexican victory nearly 150 years ago and we honor the rich traditions of Mexican-Americans not only in Michigan,
but throughout the nation.”
Cinco de Mayo, which translates to the ‘Fifth of May’, is a remembrance of one of the most remarkable underdog
victories in world history. In 1862, French Emperor Napoleon III commanded the greatest military power of his era and
sent an invading force of approximately 6,000 into the Battle of Puebla. Mexican soldiers, severely out-numbered and
out-gunned, were able to defeat the French troops under the brilliant leadership of Gen. Ignacio Zaragosa. The “Batella
de Puebla” came to represent Mexican unity and patriotism. Cinco de Mayo has become a powerful symbol of
overcoming overwhelming odds. It is analogous to the United States’ Independence Day in its role of celebrating
Mexico’s origin.
