ALL NIGHT GRADUATION
It's finally here! The time we've all been preparing for! IT'S GRADUATION!
We want to take this opportunity to provide you with the rules and guidelines for the ALL NIGHT
GRADUATION CELEBRATION. It is important that you discuss and understand this information to ensure a
successful event.
- Our celebration will be held on the night of June 14th beginning at 11:00pm and ending on June 15th at
5:00am. Students should arrive at Kempsville High School between 10 and 10:20pm for check-in. Buses
will begin loading at 10:30pm and will leave promptly at 10:40pm. Late arrivals will not be permitted to
drive to GameWorks. DO NOT BE LATE!
- Students must bring a photo ID, such as driver’s license or student ID, to check in at the school.
- No cash is required. All activities, entertainment, food, prizes and transportation are included in the
ticket price.
- DO NOT BRING ANY VALUABLES (such as yearbooks or electronic items), purses, backpacks, drawstring
bags, etc. There is no place to store items during the party, and they will not be allowed. KHS and
GameWorks are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Do not bring any food or drinks.
- Door prizes will be awarded during the celebration. Students must be present at the ANG celebration to
and claim their prizes.
- This is an alcohol/drug free lock-in event which is designed to keep our seniors safe on graduation night.
The use or possession of drugs or alcohol will not be permitted. If use is suspected or students are found
with drug or alcohol in their possession, parents will be notified to pick up those students immediately.
- At the conclusion of the ANG Celebration buses will load at GameWorks, and students will arrive back at
KHS between 5:30 and 6:00am on June 15th. Students are not allowed to leave the event early, unless
there is an emergency.

ATTENDANCE WAIVERS
Waivers for non-seniors will be available June 5 in the attendance, guidance and main offices, they must be
turned in by June 12 to be considered for the report cards. If you have 7 or more absences in any class, you
are required to apply for an attendance waiver. Please ensure you have appropriate documentation on file
for your waiver to be approved.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
Students interested in taking Behind-The-Wheel this summer may pick up a Summer School Early Bird
registration application from the Behind-The-Wheel instructor at your school. You must bring the signed
pre-registration form back to the instructor starting May 8, along with your learner’s permit, DEC-1 Green
Card, or a copy of each, and the $299.00 fee made payable to your school. Make sure you specify which
summer school site you want to attend and clearly select a 1st, 2nd, or, 3rd choice of the session dates and
times you prefer.
Regular summer school registration will be held at Bayside High and Green Run High Schools. Registration
will be held on June 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and June 21, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
CHROMEBOOK COLLECTION
All 9th, 10th, and 11th graders are required to turn in their Chromebooks for the summer. You must return
all the parts -- the charger, the case, and the device to prevent being assessed the cost of replacement.

ESSAY CONTEST
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit is pleased to announce an essay contest for high school
students in the five states within the circuit. The contest offers students an opportunity to learn about the
Constitution and Bill of Rights and a chance to win cash prizes. The theme, "Access to Justice," asks students
to consider and share their thoughts on the question: "What does access to justice mean to you and how do
the Constitution and Bill of Rights enable this access?"
The essay contest is open to high school students (grades 9 through 12) in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia,
North Carolina and South Carolina. Essays are limited to 1,000 words and must be emailed to
[email protected] by June 16, 2017.
Cash prizes of $2,000 (first place), $1,500 (second place), and $1,000 (third place) will be awarded for the

FINANCIAL AID ASSISTANCE & ACCESS SCHOLARSHIP
Seniors, the FAFSA deadlines are this month!! Do not lose out on money for college. Come see Ms. Ballard
in Guidance to get a FAFSA form. The forms will be in her box on her door.
Seniors, once you get your financial aid award letters from the colleges you have been accepted to, bring a
copy of the letter to Ms. Ballard and your name will be put in for a drawing for a gift card to either
Starbucks, Regal Cinemas, or Chick-fil-A.

GRADUATION
Mandatory Graduation Practice: Monday, June 12th at 3:30 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center
Graduation: Wednesday, June 14th at 1:30PM at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Students should
arrive at 12:30 PM. Graduates are allowed 8 tickets. More detailed ticket information will follow later this
year. Cellphones are not allowed at graduation. There is a strict dress code for graduation. Boys should
wear a dress shirt, tie, dress slacks, dress shoes and dark socks. Girls should wear a dress or dress slacks,
dress shirt and dress shoes. Students wearing jeans, shorts, tennis shoes, flip-flops or vans will not be
allowed to participate in the graduation exercises.

LEAD HAMPTON ROADS’ EXCEL LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
LEAD Hampton Roads is proud to announce the 2017 eXcel Leadership Academy, a summer youth
leadership program designed to develop critical career and life skills while building an appreciation of our
region and its many opportunities. Modeled after LEAD's widely known executive leadership program of the
Hampton Roads Chamber, eXcel has set the stage for future success in both college and the "real world" for
more than 300 students over the past 9 years. The experience provides training and connections that assist
students in accelerating their high school success and in building strong resumes and college applications.
For the Class of 2017, we are seeking 40-50 rising juniors and seniors from high schools across Hampton
Roads who are passionate about preparing for their future and providing service to their community.

LIBRARY NEWS
If you have overdue books or fines you need to pay, this is a great week to do so! Seniors need to pay their
fines before graduation.
The Library is closed for SOL testing on Monday. Students, please do not interrupt the testing location by
walking in when the test is still going on. There have been numerous students attempting to come in, but if
the sign is on the door, don’t come in.
LOCKER CLEANOUT
Students, all lockers should have been cleaned out by the end of the day last Friday. All articles left in the
lockers will be thrown away or donated.

Parents, did you know you could receive an instant email notification if your child is marked absent in class?
Did you also know that you can receive a notification on your student’s grades? Go to your Parent Portal
account, click on the My Account tab and choose the Auto Notify tab, choose attendance, grades or both
and type in the email addresses that you wish to receive these notifications.
SAT
The College Board is now offering a SAT administration in August. If you're planning to apply to college in
the fall, it is recommended that you take the SAT before your senior year begins. See your counselor for
more information!

Board Meeting (Monday, June 12th at 6:30pm in KHS Library) to learn more too. These meetings last just an
hour and are very informative, and you get to interact directly with Principal Bill Harris and other PTSA board

STEM CAMP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The STEM Camp for Elementary school students is looking for high school volunteers. If interested, please
apply by June 16. Applications can be completed online or paper copies are available in Guidance.
STEM TRIFECTA CHALLENGE
The KHS STEM Robotics Team and Cyber Security Team both competed in last Thursday’s STEM Trifecta
(Robotics, Maker, & Cyber Security) Challenge at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Both teams
advanced to the second round and did a fantastic job representing Kempsville for the first time ever! Way
to go, Chiefs!
SUMMER SCHOOL
Summer school registration for online courses has already begun. Registration for on-site courses begins
May 22. Online summer school registration can be done by clicking the following link:

On-site summer school registration for high schools will be held on Tuesday, June 20 from 5:30-8:30 pm and
Wednesday, June 21, from 8-12 pm. The High School Summer School sites are Green Run High School and

school site and transportation are based on your home school cluster site, not your enrollment at Kempsville
High School.

TCC WOMEN’S CENTER STEM PROMISE PROGRAM
Tidewater Community College's Educational Foundation recently announced a new scholarship program
designed to boost the number of women and minorities graduating with degrees in science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The TCC Women’s Center STEM Promise Program, a philanthropic effort, will start with the 2017-18
academic year. Initially, 30 scholarships covering 100 percent of tuition and fees will be awarded to highperforming students. (Please see the attached flyer for additional information.)
The six degrees covered by the scholarship can take students directly into a high-paying career or to a fouryear college to complete a bachelor’s degree. Eligible programs include:
