MEMO:
Question 1:
1.1
Answer the following questions:
Define ‘history’ in your own words.
(2)
History is about people and places and things that happened in the past. History helps people to
understand the things that happened in the past. Sometimes history helps people to solve problems
in the present, using information learned from the past. History gives people a sense of belonging.
1.2
How does local history differ from national and international history?
(3)
Local history gives information about the people, places and events that happened in the past in the
area where these people live. National history includes the whole country and international history, the
whole world.
1.3
List four ways in which people can find facts about what happened in the past.
(4)
Pictures (visual evidence)
Writing (written evidence)
Stories and interviews with people (oral evidence)
Objects and artefacts (archaeological evidence)
1.4
Why do you think that it is important for people to know from where the information on
historical events came?
(2)
If there is no evidence, it cannot be documented as a fact. Evidence is needed to prove that an event
really occurred before it can be classified officially as part of an area’s history or a country’s history.
1.5
Identify the type of evidence in each of the following:
A.
B.
objects (archaeological evidence)
written evidence
C.
D.

Grade 4
Application
Read the following extract from “Diaz and DaGama” published on www.classroom.co.zay, then
answer the questions which follow:
2.1
Why did Bartholomew Diaz sail to the west coast of Africa?
(2)
King João II commanded Diaz to find a sea route to India from Portugal and he then set off with two
sailings ships to find a route around Africa.
2.2
Explain why people are not sure what happened when Diaz and his crew sailed around the
Cape of Good Hope.
(2)
There is very little evidence or historical writings to prove what happened exactly and historians
therefore had to make assumptions about (guess) what happened.
2.3
What is a person called who studies history?
(1)
A person who studies history is called a historian.
2.4
What are the two opinions on what happened during Diaz’s trip around the Cape of Good
Hope?
(2)
The one group of historians thought that the storms drove Diaz and his crew further south and when
they then turned north, they reached Mossel Bay. More recently, historians believed he sailed
southwest to avoid the storms. He then sailed northeast (the opposite direction) and reached land at
Mossel Bay.
2.5
This is a picture of the Stone Cross that Diaz erected at Kwaaihoek in March 1488. This is an
example of information from an object.
(3)
2.6
(2)
Why could Diaz not complete his journey to India?
His crew were very ill and refused to sail further.
2.7
Explain in your own words what ‘scurvy’ is and why sailors often suffered from this illness.(2)
Scurvy is an illness caused by not having enough Vitamin C in your diet. Fruits and vegetables
provide our bodies with Vitamin C. Explorers and sailors in the past did not have access to fresh fruits
and vegetables on their ships as they were out at sea for months at a time.
2.8
This image is an example of information from pictures.
(1)
What information can you gain about Bartholomew Diaz’s trip around the Cape of Good Hope
from this?
(3)
Diaz set out with two ships, called caravels. These ships are sailing ships with three or four masts.
I can see that the seas are rough and that these ships are not really suited for very rough seas and
strong winds.

MEMO:
2.9
Why was the southern most tip of Africa named the Cape of Storms by Diaz?
(2)
Diaz and his men nearly died on their first voyage around the tip of Africa as a result of the severe
storms around the Cape. The seas around here are very rough as the cold current from the Atlantic
ocean, collides here with the warm current from the Indian ocean. The Cape is famous for its strong
winds, which further contributes to extreme storms at sea.
2.10
The information given on Diaz and his exploration of the Cape is an example of information
from writing.
2.11
(1)
Pretend you were a historian living in the 1400’s. You have been asked to document the first
trip of Bartholomew Diaz around the Cape of Good Hope. Write down four questions that you
will ask him in your interview. Remember that the purpose of the interview is to get historical
facts on the event.
Own answer. Example:
Why did the Portuguese government decide to explore a route around the Cape of Good Hope?
When did you first land on African soil?
Did you see or speak to any native people?
Why did you not continue with your journey to India?
Tell me about the conditions aboard the caravels.
Why did you name it the Cape of Storms?
When did you start your return journey?
