A program of the CANADIAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION In this issue: WHO WE ARE LETTERS FROM Camp The Official Newsletter of D-Camps ISSUE #10 | MAY 2016 Getting your camper (and you!) prepared for camp D-CAMPS CHAMPS CAMP DAYS THE CAMP SEASON IS FAST APPROACHING AND WE’VE PUT TOGETHER SEVEN GREAT TIPS TO GET YOU CAMP READY! FAMILY CAMPS 1. Prepare together. Having your camper participate 2016 CAMP REGISTRATION CLOTHESLINE CONTEST D-CAMPS IN THE COMMUNITY in the preparation for camp; making decisions, filling out forms, packing and giving them as much detail as you can, will help build their confidence, and amp up the excitement for camp! 2. Pack light. Packing light is essential for camp. Pack together with your camper so they have a better idea of where their things are, and what exactly they brought! The Canadian Diabetes Association is proud to be the only national provider of summer camp programs for children and youth living with type 1 diabetes. FOLLOW US ON TWITTER: FIND US ON FACEBOOK: FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM: 3. Helping with homesickness. Encourage your child’s independence throughout the year: before camp, have your child try a sleepover at a family member or friend’s house and send your camper with a personal item from home – whether it’s a blanket or a stuffed animal, a little reminder of home is always nice to have! 4. Encourage them. Make sure your child knows how proud and excited you are for them to go to camp! Acknowledge that you’ll miss them but emphasize how much fun they’ll have at camp, and all the new experiences they’ll be able to share with you afterwards. 5. They’ll need time to adjust. All campers need time to adjust; sometimes it takes a few days to get into the camp groove. Don’t promise to pick them up, instead, give them a few days to adjust, and chances are they’ll be too busy having fun to remember they were ever homesick! 6. Release the unease. Sending your child off to camp can be stressful for parents raising someone with T1D. At D-Camps, your child is going to gain independence in their diabetes management, and develop confidence with their diabetes. Remember that no news is good news! 7. Welcoming them back. Remember – your camper will have grown and matured throughout this experience. Maybe they can draw their own insulin now? Keep this up! Are they confident in doing their own set changes? Keep this up! It can be easy to revert back to our old ways, but by encouraging campers to continue down the path they start at D-Camps, we’re all working to inspire independence together! dcamps.ca 1-800-BANTING LETTERS FROM Camp THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF D-CAMPS | ISSUE #10 | MAY 2016 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF D-CAMPS Who D-Camps Champs: We Are MEET ORIA! D-CAMP CHAMPS ARE MEMBERS OF OUR D-CAMPS FAMILY WHO HELP SUPPORT D-CAMPS AND THE CDA IN AN EXTRAORDINARY WAY! THIS SPRING’S D-CAMPS CHAMP IS ORIA JAMES, A D-CAMPER TURNED DIABETES ADVOCATE. READ BELOW TO SEE WHAT SHE HAS TO SAY ABOUT HER INVOLVEMENT IN D-CAMPS AND CDA ADVOCACY! The CDA changed my life long before I ever started volunteering. At age 10 I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. D-Camps helped me cope with my diagnosis and gave me the knowledge I needed to live the happy and active life I wanted. Last November, I gave a presentation about life as a teenager with type 1 diabetes at a symposium organized by the CDA. During the audience question period, a lady stood up to thank me for one of the points I had stressed during my presentation. She continued on to share a personal experience of her own that highlighted the same point. It was at this moment that I decided I wanted to continue giving presentations to audiences of people with diabetes. I love how it brought people together, and fostered a sense of community. Recently I was involved in a CDA outreach day at the Legislature where I attended an advocacy training session and had the opportunity to sit down with my local MLA to talk about coverage for insulin pumps. I am now looking at future spokesperson opportunities with the CDA. Most recently, I have been working with the CDA to partner with local charities in the Victoria area to fundraise for D-Camps. I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to the CDA, as D-Camps brought me to a life of confidence living with a chronic disease. dcamps.ca 1-800-BANTING ORIA LETTERS FROM Camp THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF D-CAMPS THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF D-CAMPS | ISSUE #10 | MAY 2016 Registration for all 2016 camp programs is open and filling up fast!
