PAW PRINTS www.clintoncountyspca.org [email protected] CLINTON COUNTY S.P.C.A 33 Mill Hill Road, Lock Haven, PA 570-748-4756 Summer Happenings at the Shelter Animal Spotlight Release the Beast Walking Program In its second year, the Release the Beast Walking Program pairs community volunteers with shelter dogs. The group meets once a week for a community walk. This allows the shelter dogs to get exercise and interact with other dogs and people. With your help, these dogs will become better socialized, more manageable, and more likely to be adopted. In turn, the volunteers meet some pretty awesome dogs, make new friends and get some exercise themselves. The Feline Ambassador Program New to the shelter this year is the Feline Ambassador Program. Clinton County SPCA staff and volunteers regularly visit area nursing homes with some very special felines! The cats - "Carl" and "Betty" - have a pretty good time visiting with the residents and they bring a lot of smiles to all of the people they visit with. Chica Spayed Female, current on shots and microchipped The Clinton County SPCA Animal Sponsorship Program From the time an animal enters the Clinton County SPCA until the time it is ready for adoption, a good deal of money is spent on veterinary costs: spays, neuters, tests and vaccinations. We typically spend an average of $140 on each cat, and an average of $275 on each dog. In some cases, the cost is much more. By sponsoring an animal you can help offset the veterinary expenses for an animal of your choice. These funds will be used expressly for medical costs – not toward the adoption fee. When you sponsor an animal you will receive weekly updates and pictures via email while the animal is here at the SPCA until the time the animal is adopted. Our goal is to receive a number of sponsors for each of our animals. This will help reduce the tens of thousands of dollars that we spend every year on costly, yet necessary, medical fees. This is a one time payment of either $20 to sponsor a cat, or $30 to sponsor a dog. These are the minimum amounts, but donating more than that amount is permissible and would, of course, be greatly appreciated! Our duty is to enforce the portion of Pennsylvania Criminal Law known as Title 18 Section 5511. These are the laws that attempt to prevent animal cruelty. With regards to these 5511 laws, Humane Officers have the ability to initiate criminal proceedings (issue citations) and obtain search and seizure warrants as well as arrest warrants. Though employed by the SPCA, training and certification is done through the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Our office receives three or four calls each week. In 2015 we investigated 173 reports of abuse or neglect. 2016 is following at about the same pace with 71 investigations as of June 1st. The well-being of an animal is always the primary goal. Often, simply educating a pet owner can resolve a problem. Other times, it is necessary to inform the pet owner that certain standards of care are required by law. The majority of the time, pet owners see that it is much less costly and troublesome to comply with the law (and take proper care of their animal) rather than to receive a citation and pay a fine. Please report animal neglect or abuse to the Clinton County SPCA. You can call: (570) 748 – 4756. Or email [email protected]. We are required to keep your name confidential. Thank you. Kevin Cierpilowski HSPO Clinton County SPCA TNR Report 2016 Spring is here and so are the kittens and pregnant cats. We have been trapping since January due to the soft winter. A good thing and a bad thing. The warm winter has allowed the cats to come into heat early. So far this year our volunteers have trapped 210 cats. 210 cats spay/neutered. Without this program the overpopulation increases by leaps and bounds. Their life becomes harder, the caregivers have the burden of providing more food which puts a dent in the family budget. In our third year CCSPCA-TNR has spay/neutered over 1,100 cats in Clinton County. We spend $55.00 on each cat which includes a Rabies vaccination. A food drive was held to collect and distribute dry food to the caregivers feeding over 8 cats. The response was overwhelming and yielded over 500 pounds of dry food. A Vera Bradley Bingo event was held in March to raise funds. The event was a great success filling the Elks to full capacity. We raised over 12,500.00. We helped two other local organizations (Lock Haven Elks & Leo-Only) by splitting the profits with them. Local helping local to continue all the good work that benefits Clinton County. Please remember this is a community problem and we need community support by adding more volunteers to help trap and transport, or a donation of dry adult and kitten food. Attend a monthly meeting to find out what we are all about. For more information, please call the shelter at 570-748-4756.
