Our seniors, the Class of 2005, completed their stay with wonderful collective success. The graduation ceremonies went off without a hitch and, from all appearances, both graduates and parents were delighted. Academically, this class has performed very well in matching the successes of the previous SMCHS classes. The list of colleges to which our newly minted will be attending, to be found elsewhere in this newsletter, illustrates their successes. Our school was blessed with two National Merit Finalists among the latest group to matriculate and an extremely high success rate was garnered by those following the International Baccalaureate curriculum. What is most telling, of course, is that our students on all levels are consistently working at a challenging level, being successful in the academic realm, and realizing their potential. As we have come to expect, Santa Margarita athletes have enjoyed another banner year. We are happy with our eight Serra League Championships (Girls: Golf, Volleyball, Soccer, Water Polo, Swimming; Boys: Swimming, Track & Field, Volleyball) and we are proud of three CIF Championships (Girls Volleyball, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball) Our non-athletic activities were equally successful in their seasons. Band, Dance, Cheer, and, of course, Theatre garnered accolades galore. SANTA MARGARITA CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL During the course of this summer a large contingent of seniors will begin the cycle of participation in the Kairos retreat program. Last year, over 80 percent of the senior class made a Kairos retreat. What a huge undertaking! The Classes of 1995 and 2000 will be celebrating their ten year and five year reunions, respectively. Summer school and summer camps are ongoing as usual. Come visit our busy campus! Among the faculty and staff, we have a number of people moving to new opportunities. We wish them all a fond farewell with best wishes. They are: Carol Bender, Mike Borowski, Nick Braun, Ray Huntington, Sr. Anne Perrin, Michelle Sarkees, Brian Suchsland, and Cindy Wakefield. With best wishes for a pleasant summer, I remain, Sincerely in Christ, EAGLE ALUMNI SECTION PAGES 27-43 www.smhs.org CLASS OF 2005 news W H E R E A R E T H E Y G O I N G ? * all info as of 6/3/2005 students without college information did not report it to the Counseling Office. It is an academic honor bestowed upon the students who have made the greatest commitment to the very high level of academic curriculum at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Thomas Harward graduated number one in the class of 2005 on Saturday, June 4, 2005. Thomas, an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate, has challenged himself with the most rigorous curriculum at SMCHS. Thomas also received the honor of a National Merit Finalist, a life member in California Scholarship Federation and an AP Scholar with Distinction. However, Thomas not only excelled in the classroom, but was a vital member of the Men's Golf Team, an active volunteer at his church as well as Special Olympics. Amy Connelly, Thomas' Golf Coach, said that he was "an inspiration to others through his hard work, dedication and determination." Thomas will attend Duke University in the fall. Cristina Peleaz, of Rancho Santa Margarita, graduated number two in the class of 2005. In her four years at SMCHS, this outstanding scholar athlete has established a pattern of challenging herself both academically and athletically. Cristina graduated as an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate, AP Scholar and a life member in California Scholarship Federation. Athletically, Cristina has won recognition as being a 10 year member of the Irvine Novaquatics, a four-year member of the SMCHS Swim Team (three years as a Varsity swimmer) and being a member of CIF teams as well as recognition for numerous accomplishments, including SMCHS 2005 Scholar Athlete of the Year. Cristina was also named Orange County Register Scholar Athlete of the Week during the week of April 25-29, 2005. In addition to her success in the pool, Cristina has devoted a significant amount of time as a tutor at Robinson Ranch School and Thorman Elementary, as well as volunteering at the Modjeska Ranch Animal Rescue Program. Cristina will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. Both students were honored at SMCHS’ Commencement Ceremonies, held on Saturday, June 4, 2005 at the Bren Event Center on the University California - Irvine Campus. C A R I TA S AWA R D W I N N E R A SMCHS tradition is presenting the Caritas Award. The Caritas Award is unlike the other awards given in that it is awarded by the entire faculty. The award does not recognize achievement in one specific area, but rather recognizes success in all areas, especially in service to others. Matthew Steinbach was named the 2005 Caritas Award winner. Matthew received a standing ovation from his peers when his name was announced at the Class of 2005 Senior Awards Night. Matthew was recognized at the Graduation Ceremony and sat on stage along with the Valedictorian and Salutatorian, representing the Class of 2005. The season began with a revival of Rumors by Neil Simon. This production was significant because it was the first production that Mr. Stube directed at Santa Margarita when he began teaching. This year's production featured many talented actors and actresses and a beautiful two-story set. The production was performed in the Eagle Dome in November. December brought the second of three revivals for the 2004-2005 season, Up the Down Staircase by Bel Kaufman. The significance of this production is that it was the first production done under the name "Talon Theatre" with Mr. Nowlin as the Assistant Director. For this year's production, Mr. Nowlin co-directed with Mr. Stube. It was also the first time that the Winter Production was performed in the Eagle Dome as well. The production was comprised of a huge cast who did a wonderful job of bringing to life the students and faculty of an inner city high school. In January, senior Ryan Mac Kenzie directed his senior classmates in Ryan MacKenzie the first of two Workshop Productions. The Cover of Life, by R.T. Robinson, featured the talents of the senior theatre performing in Godspell. class and earned the "Best Workshop" award for the 2004-2005 season. The annual Children's Show was an adaptation of the book Suzuki Beane by Sandra Scoppettone. The adaptation was written by Kristina Finch and Jillian Gates and directed by Robyn Luttrell. It starred the advanced theatre class and was well received by all audiences. One of the best moments was Mr. Greg Rhodes' participation in the evening performances. April brought the third of our revivals with Godspell by John Michael Tebelak and Stephen Schwartz. This "Best Show" winner was significant because it was the first production that Ms. Wooley choreographed for Talon Theatre. She came back to choreograph "We Beseech Thee" for the revival production as well. We closed the season with our second Workshop Production, Mrs. California, by Doris Baizley, directed by senior Katie McNeil. This production featured the seniors of the Theatre Production class competing for the title of "Mrs. California." The topping on the cake was the 15th Annual Awards Banquet on Friday, May 27, 2005. Alumni hosts, Lauren Verbarg and Thomas Sabin kept the audience in stitches. In attendance were Brother The cast of Mrs. California. Lawrence Monroe, Mr. Tom Smith, Mr. Corey Lindabury, Ms. Lisa Gantz, Mrs. Nancy Shearon, Mrs. Nancy Keane, Mrs. Florence Del Folie, Mrs. Melany Armstrong, Mr. Stephen Speciale, and Mr. Brian Kretzmer, who all presented awards to the students in attendance. The 2005-2006 season should be just as spectacular, so visit the website in the September to find out more details: www.smhs.org/activities/clubs/theater SMCHS DANCE TEAM HAD ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON The 2004-2005 SMCHS Dance Team had another successful and rewarding season filled with numerous achievements and long lasting memories. Starting early in the summer, the dancers worked hard on improving their dance technique and style. The dancers traveled to Las Vegas in July where they took dance class from world renowned teachers and choreographers. Kicking off the school year, the dancers performed at the first home football game, as well as dancing to a Prince medley during halftime festivities at the Homecoming game. During the winter months, the Eagle Dancers geared up for competition season working with guest choreographers The 2004-2005 SMCHS Dance Team. on competition material. The team took seven team routines and seven solos to competition this season ranging in different styles of dance such as hip-hop, jazz, and lyrical. In early March, the SM Dance Team traveled to Orlando, Florida to compete in the Contest of Champions Dance Nationals. After two full days of competition, the dancers won two National Titles, one in the Ballet/Pointe Division and one in the Open Division. Judges even complemented the SM Dancers on their technical ability and presence! In addition, the team earned trophies in the hip-hop, jazz, and lyrical divisions earning them the prestigious Award of Excellence Cup. Sophomore Michelle Pellizzon and Junior Danielle Shultz both placed in the top 10 out of 150 other soloists in the Nation. Both ladies re-competed in the finals and were awarded scholarship money and medallions. After two months of competition, the Eagle Dance Team brought back over 50 trophies and awards to SMCHS. The Dance Team consisted of 20 members and was led by Captain Serena Chan, along with Co-captains Natasha Dadour and Trisha McNamara. The success this year of the team was due largely in part to the leadership and talent of the six seniors: Serena Chan, Natasha Dadour, Lexie Goldschmied, Trisha McNamara, Asia Viloria, and Adrienne Wright. Five of these talented individuals were three and four year members of the Dance Team. As they all move onto to four year universities next year, these bright and talented young women will continue to keep dance in their lives. We are forever grateful for the grace, talent, and leadership that they contributed to the SMCHS Dance Team. We will miss them! Do you enjoy the music played at the all-school Masses, prayer services and retreats? If you are interested in leading others in this type of worship music, please contact Mr. Tony Medeiros at [email protected] for more details on how to get involved with the Worship Band for next school year. We are looking for all types of musicians and vocals who have a passion for music and an interest in leading our school community in worship. 10 www.smhs.org SANTA MARGARITA CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL EAGLES SOAR FOR CAMPUS MINISTRY news CHARITY Santa Margarita Catholic High school students participated in the fourth annual Eagles Soar for Charity fundraising drive in support of the The Isaiah House (Orange County Catholic Worker) and raised $15,000. The drive was sponsored by the Freshmen Interdisciplinary Triad classes, and all of the money raised will go directly to feed and house the homeless of Orange County. Students, faculty, staff and parents at SMCHS donated money over a span of three weeks in donation boxes located all over the school. The drive culminated with a walk-a-thon on May 9th where students toured downtown Santa Ana to learn about the Mrs. Connelly and Mr. Debusk services available to the prepare the BBQ. homeless. The walk finished at the Catholic Worker house in Santa Ana where the SMCHS teachers, students, and parents cooked and served a barbecue lunch for nearly 50 homeless people in the backyard of the house. The Isaiah House gives food, shelter and a safe place to sleep to an average of 100-150 homeless people per night (mainly women and children). They are able to do all of this for less than $5 per person per day. The Isaiah House is only able to survive based on charitable donations made throughout the year. Kingdom fair is a "hands-on" learning project for junior social justice students based on the idea of a science fair. The goal of the Kingdom Fair is for students to become aware of organizations that, through their work on behalf of others, help to build the kingdom of God here on earth. The students began this project in December, selecting a partner and an agency that works for permanent societal structural change (through legislation, lobbying, education). Students then create a display board about their organization and its cause (homelessness, hunger, abortion, AIDS, etc), complete service hours for the organization, write a research paper incorporating scripture and Catholic social justice teaching and create an interactive educational tool to help students and parents learn about their cause. The junior students then teach the rest of the student body about their organization, cause and what they learned. This year 127 agencies were represented. Over 200 parents attended the Parent Night and were very impressed with the professional presentations of the students, the hard work, effort and passion that the students put into the project and the level of knowledge that the students displayed. Special thanks to junior teachers Mr. John Wood and Ms. Lisa Gantz for their time and hard work. All are to be congratulated! Sixteen students prepared for two years for the examination under the guidance of Lucia Wooley, SM Dance Program Director. Santa Margarita Dance has now successfully prepared 50 students for the IB Examinations in Dance, more than any other school world-wide. This year, six dancers were members of the Full-Diploma Class of 2005. The examination consisted of a World Dance Studies research paper, as well as composition, analysis and performance. Serena Chan (center) undergoing the examination. Ms. Gillette conducted the composition and analysis and performance assessment of the course work. Dancers also participated in a personal interview with Ms. Gillette, where they discussed the creative process and behind their dances choreographed during the composition component of the class. Many of these works were featured in the Spring Concert. The creativity and ingenuity of these works is most impressive. Congratulations to all of the students for their hard work and dedication to this outstanding program, and on the successful completion of the assessment process. IB STUDENTS ATTEND CALIFORNIA REPUBLICAN YOUTH CONFERENCE IN SACRAMENTO IB Certificate Candidates Paul Miszkowicz and Michael Pikula were chosen to attend the 30th Annual Republican Youth Advocacy Workshop in Sacramento this spring. Selected by the Orange County Republican Women's Federation, the boys were guests at the three-day event along with student representatives from across the state. Highlights of the conference included a steamboat sunset dinner cruise on the Sacramento River, VIP tours of the State Capital building, sitting in on Assembly sessions, discussions of pertinent state topics with legislators and meeting several top California government officials including State Senator Dick Ackerman from the 33rd District and Governor Arnold Schwarzeneggar. The boys attended a reception the final evening where the Governor spoke; they commented afterwards that the Governor is quite an impressive and inspirational speaker but at only 5'10" tall he is much shorter than he appears in the movies. SANTA MARGARITA CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER 2005 19 EAGLES IN THE NEWS FUN WITH CHALK Recent graduate, Brianna Cunha, participated in the Fun with Chalk Festival. The event is held annually in May at the Mission Viejo Norman Murray Senior Center. It is often referred to as spectator art. Over a period of two-three days from dawn until dusk artists work to turn the street into their personal canvas. In addition to the time spent at the festivals, many hours go into preparation for the events. The artists work on the blacktop and end up sore, dirty and completely happy. Fun with Chalk was brought to Mission Viejo by Dr. Frank Lieberman following a visit he made to Italy. While in Italy, he came upon artists working with chalk on the street (this began in the 16th century and is know as IMandonnari - relates to renditions of the Virgin Mary - see www.chalkpainting.com) Dr. Lieberman was so enthralled that he decided to bring this art form to Mission Viejo. This was Brianna's fifth year of participation in the Fun with Chalk event. It is a fundraising event for the visual and performing arts programs in Orange County schools. Participants in the event include professional artists, adults with a passion for art, college students, high school students and even elementary age youths. Artists are sponsored by community businesses and individuals. Each artist selects their own subject matter. Subjects range from renditions of the masters, to original creations, to renditions of children's works (Sponge Bob, Madagascar, and Mercer Mayer's Just Go to Bed). Fun with Chalk is a two-day event that is free to the public. Art, craft & food vendors, children's art workshops, art demos, and musical performances by groups and individuals add to the event. Brianna also participates in other chalk festivals throughout the year. Chalk La Strada in San Diego supports a high school for underprivileged and homeless students; Long Beach Haute Dog supports animal protection; Salt Lake City's festival supports the Utah Foster Care Foundation. Brianna plans to fly back to California (from the University of Utah) for the various festivals and needless to say, she is thrilled to be going to college in a city that hosts a chalk festival. 20 www.smhs.org S M CH S G I R L S R E C E I V E T O P G I R L S C O U T A WA R D S On April 10, 2005 Jordan Pefley was awarded the Juliette Low Spirit of Girl Scouting Award at an awards ceremony at the Doubletree Hotel in Orange. Cristin O'Connor was awarded the Girl Scout Distinguished Service Award for her work at Santiago de Compostela Catholic Church. Both girls were unaware they would be receiving any awards for their service. Congratulations to both girls for all of their hard work. In addition to winning the Juliette Low Spirit of Girl Scouting Award, Jordan also completed her Gold Award Project by working with Ms. Hanley and the Corazon Club of SMCHS. Jordan planned and implemented the Dia de los Ninos (Day of the Child) Fiesta for the children of Pedregal, Mexico. Jordan along with Ms. Hanley and many members of the Corazon Club ventured to Mexico on April 16, 2005 where the party was to be held. They played games, did crafts and face painting, made lunch and the best part was the water balloon toss. The project was the final part of the Gold Award. She had previously completed all of the badge work and other awards necessary for the Gold Award. Jordan received her Gold Award at a Ceremony in June. SUMMER 2005 23 GUILD news T H E S A N T A M A R G A R I T A G U I L D Dear Santa Margarita Family: The Santa Margarita Guild is comprised of parents, faculty, staff and administration of Santa Margarita Catholic High School. The Guild sponsors several events throughout the school year in an effort to support and carry out the mission of the high school. For parents who are new to Santa Margarita in the fall of 2005, we are sponsoring our annual Welcome Parent Barbeque on Saturday September 10, 2005. The Parent Barbeque offers those who are new to the Santa Margarita Family, the opportunity to meet other incoming families and learn more about what makes Santa Margarita so very special. The Gift Wrap program is a fundraiser that we use to support all the Guild sponsored events and programs throughout the school year. Information will be mailed out to all incoming families this summer and we certainly appreciate your support. Our third annual Eagle Classic 100 Golf Marathon will take place in the spring of 2006. All proceeds from the Golf Marathon provide Christmas bonuses for our fabulous faculty, administration and staff. We strongly encourage you to become involved in this wonderful event by participating as a sponsor or by playing a leisurely 100 holes of golf and supporting our school. Our Safe Homes program is designed to encourage parents to work together to support and strengthen our students against the pressures of alcohol and drug use. We feel that it is extremely important that we know where students are going. If we work together and achieve 100 percent participation, we can do our best to fight the temptations of alcohol and drugs. Information regarding this important program will be mailed to all parents at the beginning of the school year. We are in the process of designing a Guild brochure which will detail our purpose and the events that we sponsor for Santa Margarita. This brochure will be available for all parents in the fall of 2005. We also would like to thank Isabel and Mark Bloom for their spiritual leadership and endless hours of time and support as Co-Presidents of the Executive Board during this past school year. Your four years at Santa Margarita will pass by very quickly and we encourage all of you to become involved from the beginning to support a very special school. Please visit the Guild web page at www.smhs.org for updated information. Have a wonderful summer. SANTA MARGARITA CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER 2005 25 DEVELOPMENT & BUSINESS news BUSINESS OFFICE & DEVELOPMENT NEWS Dear Santa Margarita Family and Alumni, Throughout its history, Santa Margarita Catholic High School has endeavored to keep tuition at an affordable rate. It is our continued goal that all qualified students be able to attend SMCHS. Our Financial Aid Grant Program was established so that we could enable SMCHS to welcome students from varying backgrounds and talents to our campus. In order to do this we need your help. Year after year, the families who apply for Financial Aid exceed the expected amount that was budgeted. Therefore, many families may not receive a much needed Financial Aid Grant. Currently we are assisting close to 200 Santa Margarita families with tuition assistance. However, with an increase in funds, we could help so many more. There are so many of you who I'm sure would like to help a student whose family may have endured the loss of a job or who have had a member of their family become ill or disabled. You can help by contributing to our Financial Aid Grant Program. If you would like to contribute to this special program, in any amount you feel that you can afford, it would be greatly appreciated. By making your donation, you too can be an integral part of this program and help a family realize their dream of a Catholic education, regardless of their ability to pay. Please send your tax deductible donation for the Financial Aid Grant Program to the SMCHS Development Office and please mark your check 'Financial Aid' so that you can help a worthy student be a part of the Santa Margarita family. With Thanks! Br. SANTA MARGARITA CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER 2005 27 ALUMNI news S A L U T E T O T H E M I L I TA R Y The 4th of July is a fun day of decorated bicycles, parades, barbecues and more. However, the reason for the celebration is our great country and our freedom as Americans. We reflect on all that has contributed to that freedom and we are thankful for those who step up and defend all of us everyday by serving in the armed forces. We have so much to be thankful for…we are thankful for our families and friends, our faith and our country. We are thankful to our Alumni who have answered the call to serve. Below are just a few of our Alumni who are serving in the military. Matt Cottonaro '91 has been serving in the Army Infantry since 1996. Matt was enlisted for a number of years, finished college (BS) Psychology and became an officer, branched Infantry. He has been stationed at a number of places, but some of the more recognized units he has served under are: 101st Airborne Division (1/187 Infantry Battalion, and LRSD), 53rd SIB (1/124 Infantry, National Guard) and 1st Infantry Division: Germany (1/18 Infantry Battalion). Matt has had the honor of serving in Iraq, Saudi Arabia and with the 1st Infantry Division and will once again be deploying to Iraq. In reference to serving in the military, Matt said, "Those who knew me, remembered how much I didn’t agree with all of the rules/regulations that SMCHS instilled those years in attendance. Failure to conform resulted in endless yards of bear crawls and countless hours of detention. In the end, the dichotomy is that I am in one of the most rigid institutions in the United States and enjoy it. If you can believe it, we do bear crawls here, so I am always grounded in my past. Thank you for supporting us, SMCHS, and good luck in all of your endeavors. Our Lady Queen of Victory, Pray for Us." Mike Coppock '99 graduated from the US Naval Academy on May 28, 2004. Mike earned a BS degree in Political Science and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy. He chose aviation and attended Flight School in Pensacola, Florida. He will serve his country as a Naval Aviator. Mike was married on June 12, 2004 to Jocelyn Voss of Ohio at St. Timothy Catholic Church in Laguna Niguel. Craig Coppock '00 was the Best Man and Eric Coppock '04 was an usher in the wedding. The reception was held at the Surf & Sand Resort in Laguna Beach. The couple honeymooned in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and now live in Pensacola, Florida while Mike completes his Naval Flight Training. The Coppock brothers: Eric Coppock ‘04, Mike Coppock ‘99 and Craig Coppock ‘00. Craig Coppock '00 graduated from the United States Military Academy of West Point on May 29, 2004. He earned a BS degree in Management and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army. He branched Infantry and has completed Infantry Officers Basic Course at Ft. Benning, GA. Upon completion of Ranger School, he will serve his country as an Infantry Officer. Craig also served as Best Man at his brother's wedding, Mike Coppock '99 in June 2004. We now have over 50 SMCHS Alumni in all branches of the military services. Those listed above are just a few of them…for more names, please see the list below and also more are featured in our Class Updates section. We are so proud of all of them! Over the past several years, Brett has been involved with the creation of several NBC, FOX and CBS productions and through his contacts he invited several Disney legends to join with Santa Clara alumni and families to help raise money for Santa Clara's Alumni Family Scholarship. Some of the Disney greats who Megan Meihaus and Michele Papay with were there were Jason Alexander, David Ogden Stiers, Margaret Kerry who Jason Alexander. acted the part of Tinkerbell in Peter Pan; Brad Bird, the Director of The Brett Tomberlin SMCHS Class of 1999. Incredibles; Glen Keane, Executive Director of The Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin and Tarzan, and several other Disney greats. When not coordinating special events, Brett is working for NBC Studios with Jay Leno and The Tonight Show and also Executive Directing an untitled project for the Walt Disney Studios in Los Angeles. SMCHS ALUMNI GIVE A D A Y O F A GIFT OF THE HEART… SMCHS current and alumni parents, Bob and Mary Kay Bader spearheaded an incredible outreach this past fall on Friday, November 26, 2004. The 2004 Gift of the Heart Flag Football Tournament was held on the SMCHS campus to benefit a former student and athlete, Damien Minna '97. The tournament brought together hundreds of alumni, alumni parents, current football families and coaches in order to raise funds to help Damien with rehabilitation costs following his spinal cord injury last August. Although Damien was at the "heart" of the event, the day fostered something more. It brought an incredible amount of alumni back to campus as volunteers, participants and spectators, many for the first time since they graduated from SMCHS. The participants played not to compete, but rather to benefit one of their own. They recognized that Damien provided the catalyst for so many to come together and make a difference. Spirits were high and the feeling of camaraderie was amazing as alumni from all SMCHS classes came together under a united cause. Through the efforts of everyone involved in the Gift of the Heart tournament, over $37,500 was raised for Damien. These funds will help Damien and his family on his long road to recovery. Damien has been making progress on this road and he hopes to attend some SM events during the 2005-2006 school year. To track Damien's progress, visit www.damienminna.com. For information about future Gift of the Heart tournaments, contact the SMCHS Football Office at 949-766-6000 x 2205. In the last issue of Wings, we asked for the stories of our Santa Margarita Sweethearts who have gotten married. Below we want to share a couple of those with you, as well as the list of alums who have married other alums, that we know about! There are probably more of you out there, so we apologize if we overlooked you this time. Send us your story or just let us know so we can add you to the list. We are at 24 couples and growing! They are all going to be seniors in college next year with five of them at USC, one at Arizona State University, one at UCLA and three at Saddleback. These girls have their own reunions every winter and spring break, as well as each summer. They wanted to share this picture as a great example of the bonds they made through pep squad and classes at Santa Margarita. They all are still best friends, keeping in touch with each other on a daily and weekly basis. They all wanted to say "Thank you to Santa Margarita for the friendships that we've made and we share; a lot of us would be very different people without them. Our parents used to tell us that our college relationships would be the ones that lasted...but we have found our high school bonds are the strongest, and disregarding the cliché will truly last a lifetime!” Top Row: Kristi Demorest, Marilee Schreiber, Kristin Gatfield, Renee Christensen, Brittany Gotschall, and Malia Bowman. SMCHS Alumni Help Students become 'Future Focused' In 2003, Santa Margarita graduates, Jennifer Connellan ('95) and Anne Luke ('96) teamed up to create Future Focused - a business that offers motivational coaching and tutoring programs for students in Orange County. Located in San Juan Capistrano, the Future Focused program was developed by Connellan and Luke to help students set goals and learn the academic skills that will lead them to future success. After successful academic and athletic careers at UCSD and UCLA, Connellan and Luke each went on to pursue a Master of Counseling and Clinical Psychology. The two SMCHS alumni reconnected in 2003, and realized their mutual passion for helping high school students. They came together to create Future Focused-a program that helps students stay motivated and empowers them to reach their fullest potential. Recently, Connellan and Luke returned to SMCHS to offer the Future Focused eight-week coaching program to ten current students who were selected by teachers and the administration because of their high potential for improvement. The results and feedback were quite impressive. Nine out of the ten students significantly improved their GPAs and reported a higher level of interest in school. In addition, parents, teachers and students gave very positive feedback. One student said, "Future Focused helped me improve my grades and figure out what I want to do in the future. And it was fun!" Connellan and Luke are pleased to be working with Santa Margarita, and look forward to continuing to help SMCHS students. To get in touch with Future Focused, please call (949)276-4077 or visit their website: www.FutureFocused.com. They met before the show in the "Drama Room" for a reception hosted by Jeff Stube, Director of Talon Theatre and SMCHS Class of 1992. After socializing, they excitedly made their way to the "Dome" to see the revival of the musical that some of them had starred in during their time at SMCHS. This marked the final production of the 2004-2005 Talon Theatre Season, which had celebrated the 15th Anniversary of Talon Theatre. Thanks to Jeff Stube for encouraging our former Eagles to come back on campus for many fun events this year! ALUMNI "PUTT AROUND" AT EAGLE CLASSIC We love to see our Alums participating in SM events and they have been seen enjoying various Santa Margarita events such as the Homecoming football games, class reunions, Valentasia and now even the 2nd Annual SMCHS Eagle Classic golf marathon that was held on June 8, 2005 at Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point on an absolutely perfect southern California day. Three of our alumni, Jeff Harris '91, Adam Hopp '04 and Tim Pierce '98 as well as some alumni parents, took part in this fun and unique event which raises money for the Christmas bonuses for all of the teachers and staff at Santa Margarita. The money was raised by the participants having sponsors who would pay a flat donation of anywhere from $1 to $10 per hole as the golfers tried to complete 100 holes during the day. The event was an incredible success. One of the best things about the day was having everyone join together to support our faculty and staff and seeing our alumni come back and be a part of our Eagle family! Eagle Spirit lives on long after graduation. 32 www.smhs.org Mr. Steve Sellwood and Adam Hopp ‘04. Tim Pierce ‘98 and Jeff Harris ‘91. EAGLE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS Each year since 2001, the SMCHS Alumni Office has presented two deserving seniors with the Eagle Alumni Association (EAA) Scholarship at Senior Awards Night in May. The EAA scholarships are "scholarships of the heart" as they are not only based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community service but the winners also possess that special "Eagle spirit" which makes our students so unique. All of the 2005 applicants were outstanding but five finalists were chosen. These five students went through an interview process and they were all amazing. Each year's group of finalists is a little different. This year's finalists were a very happy group! During the interviews, they made us smile and laugh quite a bit. They were filled with so much Santa Margarita pride that they definitely were perfect finalists. We wish we could give scholarships to all of them but we had to select three runner ups and two winners. As a special memento of their Santa Margarita years, the runner ups receive a Cross Pen with our Eagle logo. Our 2005 runner ups were: Brianna Cunha, attending University of Utah; Jessy Jones, attending Chapman University; and Adam Stout, attending Marquette University. The winners each receive $1,000 to be used towards college expenses. Also, their names are engraved onto the Scholarship Perpetual Plaque which hangs in the Alumni Office and they each receive an individual plaque and the Eagle logo cross pen. We are very proud of our 2005 winners! They are: Jessica De Filippo who will be attending the University of San Diego in the fall and Deirdre Dolan who will be attending Boston University. Congratulations Jessica and Deirdre! Dierdre Dolan and Jessica De Filippo with their plaques at Senior Awards Night.
