P9 Metaphor and Simile
Build-a-Better-Metaphor [and Extend]
Part One—Build-a-Better-Metaphor
1. Create a chart with 3 columns labeled abstract, color, and concrete.
Abstract
Ex. Freedom
Color
Ex. Gold
Concrete
Ex. Horse
2. Write as many responses as you can for each column.
a. Abstract = nouns which cannot be seen or touched, such as feelings, concepts, beliefs
(ex. hate, time)
b. Colors = be specific (lavender, not just purple)
c. Concrete = nouns which can be seen (ex. desk, chair)
3. Create 3-5 metaphors and/or similes by combining 1 item from each column into a sentence (ex.
Freedom is a gold horse in full flight across a field.)
Part Two—Extend
1. Choose your favorite metaphor or simile and expand it into a poem of at least 10 lines.
