Summary Lesson 1.2 Opposite of Integers and Absolute Value

Summary Lesson 1.2
Opposite of Integers and Absolute Value
I.
Two integers are opposites if they are each the same distance away from zero, but
on opposite sides of the number line.
1) Opposite of 8 is -8
2 ) Opposite of 1 is -1
3 ) Opposite of -2 is 2
4 ) Opposite of -a is a
Another notation that you will see for "opposite" is another negative sign!
The "opposite of -4" can also be written as
-(-4)
5)
So,
-(-4 ) = 4
-(-12) = 12
6)
“Means the opposite of -12”
–(10) = -10
“Means the opposite of 10”
II.
Absolute Value means “how far” a number is from zero, so the answer MUST be
positive.
6 is 6 units away from zero and
-6 is 6 units away from zero
SO, |−6| = 6 and |6| = 6
The symbol for Absolute Value is | |
1) |−5| = 5
2) |−10| = 10
3) |10| = 10
4) − |−5| = -5
5) |8 − 2| = 6
6) |−𝑥| = x
