Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle UK Junior Maths Challenge On Monday 19th May, in the spirit of the forthcoming World Cup football tournament, St Margaret Ward hosted a Brazil Arts ‘Samba’ Day. The event was located at both the Floral Hall and St Wilfrid’s Catholic Academy. 180 Year 3 pupils from 6 of the partner primary schools had a great time taking part in the Samba drumming, singing and dance workshops, even learning some Portuguese phrases too! Some of our Year 10 students helped at the event as ambassadors of our school, they were: Mahek Bukhari, Courtney Chell, Oilvia Crozier, Jack Higgs, Amie Leese, Greg Platt, Dani Smith and Sanna Nawaz. This May, our top Year 8 students and a selection of Year 7 students, took part in a Maths Challenge run by the University of Leeds. The questions were designed to be different from the main curriculum but test mathematical understanding and logic. We have been delighted with the results and would particularly like to praise the following students: Certificate: Jacob Baskeyfield (Y8) GOLD Madison Licata (Y8) SILVER Ahmed Bilal (Y7) Year 8 BRONZE George Lamb Jessica Weatherby Dannielle Farr Rebekah Sexton Daniel Hymus Max Healey Georgia Lobley-Holland Harry Brittain Year 7 BRONZE Leon Hassall Lewis Edwards Alyssa Barnett FAREWELLweThissayhalf-term farewell TO STAFF to members of staff who are leaving for pastures new and retirement. We would like to wish them well in their new ventures and wish Mr Barber a very happy retirement. Police Award for students Two SMW students, Daniel French and Jordan Burton, have been presented with Chief Officer Commendation awards following an incident where they helped an old lady after she had experienced a nasty fall. They stayed with the lady until the paramedics arrived. Talking about the incident, Paramedic, George Shakeshaft said, “I would like to take the opportunity to thank both of the boys for all their help. My crew mate and I were extremely grateful to the boys, not only for their assistance to us on that day, but for the help and compassion shown to the lady and her husband in such difficult circumstances.” Well done to all the SMW staff who completed the 50 mile Dougie Mac bike ride on 18th May. The ICT department and the school deliver lessons to students to help them understand how being safe online is important, whether in class or at home. Year 7 pupils have been designing E-safety posters to be displayed in every classroom in the school to remind other students about staying safe. Year 9 pupils are currently creating movies to show the dangers if pupils don’t follow simple rules to keep themselves safe. Remember when using the internet; Don’t give out your details online Any information you give out may be accessible for years to come Keep your anti-virus software up to date Ensure when using social media that your settings are set to private. Don’t meet up with strangers you’ve met online without an adult you can trust. People can easily lie and pretend to be someone they are not.
