The White House MRSWALKER KNOLLYS KNOLLYS FROM MRS Thursday 30th April 2015 NEXT WEEK’S EVENTS & FIXTURES Dear Parents, MONDAY We have been delighted this year to have had several ‘Gap Students’ join the Glendower staff for one or two terms each, several of whom have been old Glendower girls. Gap students, as the name suggests, have usually just left school following completion of their A’ levels and are taking a gap year to explore new experiences prior to taking up a place at university. They therefore offer to our school a breadth of interests and skills and our girls have certainly been the beneficiaries of their enthusiasm and willingness to get stuck into school life. Our latest gap student, Miss Clemmie Bache joined us this week and we hope she will have a wonderful time here at Glendower this term. I would like to remind you that you should purchase a new dress/dresses for your daughter if you know that she is wearing one which is far too small for her. We are still seeing girls around school with dresses that are very short indeed. Please ensure that the length of your daughter’s dress is on or just above the knee. The dress should be worn with either a gingham belt around the waist or a purse belt (Upper School only). We met the pupils in the park for a picnic and later walked to the Buddhist church where we started our debate. Orchard House hosted and so they introduced the motion for our debate: “This House believes social media and apps do more harm than good.” We began by completing a pre-debate vote where people could vote whether they were for or against the motion. The ‘against’ side were in the lead. The proposing and opposing sides each had a turn to deliver their arguments and the speakers from Orchard House summed up their main points. Sophie Wisden spoke for the proposing side and Isabelle Samuels spoke for the opposing side. The teams then had to face questions from the floor and both parties debated their points articulately. After everyone had spoken we voted again to see if anyone had changed their mind. The ‘against’ team were again in the lead and they had increased their number of voters, proving that they had convinced more people than the ‘for’ team. Therefore, more people believe that social media does more good than harm. Orchard House declared that the final result was a draw, as all parties argued their case beautifully, and the teachers were incredibly impressed with how well the speakers debated when put on the spot. Everyone had a really lovely afternoon and a big well done to all the Y6 girls! Isabelle Samuels and Sophie Wisden www.glendowerprep.org 2 popularise the graphical presentation of statistical data. HOUSE ASSEMBLY For our fourth House Assembly, the girls in the different Houses met to vote for a role model. The House Captains and Vice Captains presented several role models and all the girls then voted. Gordon will be associated with Rosa Parks. Marlborough will be associated with Amelia Earhart. Wellington will be associated with Florence Nightingale. Rosa Parks (1913 –2005) was an African-American Civil Rights activist, whom the United States Congress called “the first lady of civil rights” and “the mother of the freedom movement”. She resisted bus segregation and was arrested for civil disobedience in violating Alabama segregation laws, but won her case. Parks’ act of defiance and the Montgomery Bus Boycott became important symbols of the modern Civil Rights Movement. She became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation. She organised and collaborated with civil rights leaders. Amelia Earhart (1897 –1937) was an American aviation pioneer and author. She was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She received the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for this record. She wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences and helped to create an organisation for female pilots. She was a member of the National Woman’s Party, and an early supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment. During an attempt to make a flight of the globe in 1937, she disappeared. Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was an English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She served as a manager of nurses trained by her during the Crimean War, where she organised the tending to wounded soldiers. She gave nursing a highly favourable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture. Much of her published work was concerned with spreading medical knowledge. She also helped The White House Well done to Marlborough House Captain and Vice-Captain, Tessa Watherston and Eva CarmonaSelfin, Wellington House Captain and Vice-Captain, Alexandra Hewett and Saskia Zilkha, and Gordon House Captain and Vice-Captain, Sara Varma and Dilia Thovez, for leading the presentations. After the vote, the House Captains announced the total House Points for the Spring Term. Below you will find an overview of the results since last year. Well done girls for your hard work! This was a superb opportunity for the girls to hear first-hand about what life was like and to ask questions about this fascinating time in history. Lotte told us all about how scary life was for her as a child during the war. She had to always carry a gas mask with her and she had to hide in underground caves when an air raid siren went off. Life was difficult as there was a constant threat of invasion. Lotte remembers being very scared of Hitler and being worried that he was hiding in the caves! The girls learnt all about rationing – a concept very strange to us today as we are often very lucky to have plenty of food. Lotte desperately wanted sweets during times of rationing. Later in the war, she was evacuated to the country and she said this was lots of fun as she got to make lots of new friends. Everyone really worked together during the war. Lotte ended the session by showing us a real gas mask and her father’s hip flask, complete with a dent that showed how it had saved him from a bullet! The girls were amazed. We would like to say a big thank you to Lotte for giving up her time to teach the girls about this incredible part of our history. It was so valuable to hear all about it from someone who had lived through the war and, with the 70th anniversary of VE Day approaching on 8th May, it was so interesting for the girls to get the opportunity to talk to her. Miss Mellor The White House Thank you to all those who have responded. This event is oversubscribed, and we are working on solutions to enable access to as many in the community as possible. Please don’t forget to submit your questions for the Heads by Thursday, 7th May, VIA PAPERLESS POST.
