Alternative Sentencing Unit Officer
The Alternative Sentencing Unit Officer Interviews and coordinates with the Courts to approve or deny
alternative sentencing; Keeps all data entry up-to-date for monitoring DWI misdemeanor and court
compliance; Explains in details all the rules and regulations as outlined in the Judgment and Sentence to the
offenders, probationer and their families; Collects, handles and reads drug screens; Provides “good time”
forms to courts in a timely manner; Understands proper procedures for reclassifying individuals who have
violated the program; Submits appropriate documentation to request bench warrant for failure of probationer
to comply with terms of their Judgment and Sentence. Employee may perform a wide range of detention
duties to insure proper booking, incarceration and safety of persons committed to the Detention Center
including those on alternative sentencing. Employee will be a backup for the Court Compliance Manager for;
Scheduling hook-up appointments for JEHD; Setting up and meeting with the offenders and reviewing their
behavior; Supervising and monitoring behavior of offenders on Jail Electronic Home Detention, as well as
probationers on the compliance monitoring program. Coordinates and cooperates with law enforcement
agencies and judiciary agencies as necessary. MINIMUM QUALIFICAITONS: High School diploma or GED
certificate is required; One (1) year experience as a Detention Officer is required; Must have, or ability to
obtain, a valid NM driver’s license with no DWI convictions or more than two (2) moving violations in the past
three (3) years, and be insurable by the County Insurance Authority. MUST PROVIDE A CURRENT
DRIVING RECORD. Must be able to pass a rigid background investigation including work history, character,
honesty, integrity, criminal record, driving record; Must have NO felony convictions or misdemeanors
involving moral turpitude or domestic violence. Eligibility to work in the U.S. is verified thru E-Verify; Must
successful pass a pre-employment physical examination; drug screen, and polygraph test; Vision correctable
to 20/20; Must have NO illegal drug use within the past three (3) years; Must be able to type accurately 25
words per minute; MUST PROVIDE A CURRENT TYPING TEST and able to use clerical skills to develop
documents, correspondence, letters and reports; Must be certified within (1) one month in CPR and First Aid
and maintain certification; Must successfully pass ECDC 40-hour Detention Officer Certification course within
six (6) months of hire. Must pass a Defensive Tactics course or a similar course upon hire; Must have the
ability to understand and apply the appropriate use of force and learn to use restraint techniques; Must have
excellent computers skills, including data entry; Must be knowledgeable of all rules, regulations, policies and
procedures and guidelines for Detention Officers, Transportation Officers and for all Alternative Sentencing;
Must be knowledgeable of all traffic laws and regulations; Must be able to work independently: to analyze
and evaluate; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prioritize workload; to work in a
stressful environment; operate a computer; be persuasive, assertive and empathetic to people from various
populations; and maintain confidentiality. Must be able to handle stress and respond appropriately in
stressful situation. Employee must perform all duties with minimal supervision. Employee will be required to
work irregular hours, attend job-related meetings in and out of town, and perform other duties as assigned,
including being called out to check on offenders during off hours. Starting Salary $17.25 - $ 19.03 per hour

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

Essential Functions
Overtime and attendance are Essential Duties of this position
This employee will be responsible for insuring that offenders meet the criteria for
alternative sentencing in accordance with rules and regulations set forth by each
program. Please review each item and determine if you are capable of performing that
duty.
Input all data entry for court compliance, DWI and alternative sentencing programs.
Under the supervision of the Court Compliance Supervisor, will do some interviewing to
insure that the offender meets the criteria for the alternative sentencing program and/or
compliance-monitoring program. Correspond and communicate with courts regarding
each alternative sentenced offender and the compliance-monitored probationer.
Determine the extent to which referred offenders are in compliance with their
sentences for attending and completing court-ordered programs and treatments,
through interaction with magistrate and district courts, including but not limited to
payment of fines, fees and restitution. May perform periodic and/or random testing of
the offenders for alcohol and/or drug compliance.
Will insure that the Judgment and Sentence form is received on each DWI offender
that has been referred to the program. Will review what the offender will need to
complete. This officer will then determine and document the offender’s compliance
Back up the Court Compliance Manager to meet with the alternative sentenced
offenders or compliance monitored probationers on a weekly basis to encourage and
motivate compliance with their sentences from the courts, including but not limited to
payment of fines, fees and restitution. Make random visits to bars and clubs. Monitor
offender’s use of an ignition interlock device.
Assist in the supervision of all alternative sentenced offenders and compliancemonitored probationers including periodic phone checks, and alcohol breath tests and
drug testing.
Maintain payment ledgers for alternative sentenced offenders and probationers.
Provide periodic offender non-compliance reports to the courts, district attorney’s office
and defense attorneys.
Coordinate and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies and judiciary agencies
as necessary.
Work independently: to analyze and evaluate; to communicate; to prioritize workload;
to work in a stressful environment; operate a computer; be persuasive, assertive and
empathetic to people from various populations; and maintain confidentiality.
Performs duties alone, while in the JEHD office or during hook- up at the offender’s
home and sometimes performs as part of a selected team during duties that call for
more than one officer.

minimum qualifications on a job posting, and has completed and passed any testing procedures
required by the department for employment qualification, the applicant shall be identified by the
Human Resources Department. Office on the list of eligible applicant for the department seeking to fill a
position that the applicant is a “veteran.”
The purpose of this form is to allow job applicants the opportunity to identify and certify that they are a
veteran who has an honorable discharge from the military or to verify that the job applicant is a
member of the National Guard or Reserve who has successfully completed basic training.
Once verified and/or certified a s a veteran AND if it is determined that the veteran applicant meets or
exceeds the minimum qualifications on a job posting, the Human Resources Department Office will
identify the veteran applicant on the list of eligible applicants for the department seeking to fill the
position. Once certified and identified by the Human Resources Department Office, the department
shall interview the identified veteran.
In further accordance with the County of Eddy Resolution #R-14-73 , the Governing Body does not
guarantee that a veteran shall be hired for the position being applied for, only that the veteran will be
given an interview.
