About This Directory
The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture
publishes the Saskatchewan Organic
Marketing and Processor Guide to profile
and promote Saskatchewan’s organic
industry to an international audience.
Saskatchewan is a prairie province located in the heartland of
Canada. The province’s farmland covers more than 65 million
acres (26 million hectares) and accounts for more than 40 per cent
of Canada’s arable land. This pristine environment boasts more
than 100,000 freshwater lakes.
An abundance of fertile agricultural soils and a clean, natural
environment with plenty of sunshine make Saskatchewan an
ideal region for organic production. With the lowest land costs of
any province in Canada, farmers in Saskatchewan are
well-positioned to produce and market organic products. The
current value of the Canadian organic retail market is estimated at
more than $3 billion and continues to grow.
According to the 2011 Census of Agriculture, Saskatchewan is
home to 1,064 certified organic farms. In addition, it is estimated
that Saskatchewan has more than half of Canada’s organic land.
Currently, Saskatchewan has more than 50 organic processors
and handlers, including seed cleaners, packers, brokers and
manufacturers who process products from flour and flax oil to
packaged products such as bread, cereal mixtures and oatmeal.
Saskatchewan’s organic processors are capturing market demand
for organic food.

More than half of the organic grains and oilseeds produced
in Canada are from Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan also has
organic livestock, vegetable and fruit operations. The province
is a leading Canadian exporter of organic grain and oilseed
products and cereal-based food ingredients. The majority of
Saskatchewan’s exports are destined for the United States, the
European Union and Japan.
