Grade 8 – Unit 1 – The Number System
2016-2017
Subject: Mathematics
Unit: The Number System
Grade: 8
Pacing: 8.5 days Instruct/Assess
1.5 days ERI
Total:
10 days
Essential Question(s):
1. What is the relationship between natural, whole, integer, rational, and irrational numbers?
2. How can real numbers be compared on a number line?
3. How can a value that repeats as a decimal be written as a fraction?
Big Idea(s):
1. The real number system is comprised of natural, whole, integer, rational, and irrational numbers, each with
their own defining characteristics.
2. Irrational numbers can be compared within the real number system by using rational approximations or
placing them on a number line.
3. Numeric values can be represented using a variety of formats; rational numbers can be presented as fractions,
decimals, or percentages.
