It predates the Preakness by six years and the Kentucky Derby by eight. The last Kentucky Derby winner to win the Belmont was Thunder Gulch in 1995. The last Preakness winner to win the Belmont was Afleet Alex in 2005. The 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 Belmont winners all were making their debuts in the Triple Crown series. 6 of the last 7 Belmont winners prepped most recently at Churchill Downs or Pimlico, but not necessarily in the Kentucky Derby and/or Preakness. Three fillies have won the Belmont: Rags to Riches (2007), Tanya (1905) and Ruthless (1867). The length of the stretch run for the Belmont Stakes is just 1,097 feet, the shortest of the three Triple Crown races – a fact many fans misinterpret given the 1-1/2 mile circumference of the expansive Belmont oval. The largest Belmont crowd when a Triple Crown was not on the line at the time of entries was 73,857 in 2001 to see Point Given dominate – among those in attendance the former President and First Lady, Bill and Hillary Clinton.
