Naval History
During the American Revolutionary War, among the members of the
Continental Congress, was an argument about establishing a navy. Supporters argued
that a navy would protect the coast from invasion, imports and exports, and would help
get support from foreign countries. Detractors said that challenging the British Royal
Navy, the world's strongest naval power at that time, would be a foolish and suicidal act.
While Congress deliberated, two unarmed British supply ships from England were
heading towards Quebec without escort. A plan was then created to intercept the ships,
by using two ships operated by Congress to take over the British supply transports.
However the armed vessels used, were owned by individual colonies, not Congress. The
plan did not initiate until October 13, 1775, when George Washington had taken
command of three armed schooners under Continental authority, to intercept any
British supply ships near Massachusetts. With the news that the vessels were already
sent under Continental control, they decided to send two more.
From that point on October 13 become known as the United States Navy's official
birthday. Later with the passing by Congress of the Naval Act of 1794 six frigates were
constructed, the USS Constitution, USS President, USS United States,USS Congress,
USS Chesapeake, and USS Constellation. Then with the help of our involvement in
World War II the U.S. Navy came into international prominence in the 20th century.
Now in the 21st Century the U.S. Navy currently has over 340,000 personnel on active
duty and nearly 128,000 in the Navy Reserve. It operates 279 ships in active service and
more than 4,000 aircrafts.
Captain Walter Migrala. USN, (Ret.)

Commanding Officer of Naval Weapons Station Earle, in Colts Neck,
New Jersey.
While on active duty Captain Migrala taught at the NROTC Unit at the
Illinois Institute of Technology, in Chicago. During that tour he also
earned an MBA. It was during that tour that he developed a strong

Perth Amboy High School, he taught at the NJROTC Unit at Manchester
Township High School, a unit which he started. He has also taught at

Manhattan.
Captain Migrala believes that the NJROTC unit here at Perth Amboy is
one of the best in the state, due in large part to the dedication of the
