Hope this helps!!!!
For those new to the school we have an outsourced canteen on Fridays. You just need to make sure
your lunch order is in the tub when you get into the room at 9.00am. We also have icy poles at Friday lunch&mes. The money and numbers from each grade comes to me and I then make sure that
the icy poles are delivered at lunch&me – however we do have a mantra from the prep’s last year
and that is “You get what you get and you don’t get upset” – because I don’t take orders for specific
flavours!
MONDAY and TUESDAY were great days for us. On Monday, staff undertook professional training on Jolly Phonics, which is a
Synthe&c Phonics program we are implemen&ng, in Founda&on this year. Over the next three years, all Founda&on – Year 2
students will learn literacy with this program. This program is supported by the implementa&on of the Soundwaves Spelling
Program in Years 1 – 6.
An excerpt from the website
What is Jolly Phonics?
Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children and teachers, who can see their students achieve. The letter sounds are split into seven groups as shown below.
Letter Sound Order
The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). This enables children to begin building
words as early as possible.
How does Jolly Phonics work?
Using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly Phonics teaches children the five key skills for reading and
writing. The programme continues through school enabling the teaching of essential grammar, spelling
and punctuation skills.
The five skills taught in Jolly Phonics
1. Learning the letter sounds
2. Learning letter formation
3. Blending
4. Identifying sounds in words (segmenting)
5. Tricky words.
Later in this semester, we will run a parent information night on Jolly Phonics
What is Soundwaves?
Soundwaves is a whole school phonemic approach to spelling. These are some of the notes I took at Tuesday’s professional
learning session.
Phoneme – sound we hear. Grapheme – leLers that represent the sounds.
We are oMen told how well the Finnish students do, when they have 24 sounds and 24 leLers that represent the sounds, it
may make learning to read and spell a lot easier. Have a look at how many sounds we can make with the phonemes that are
produced from our 26 leLer alphabet?

Now you may be thinking phonemes? Graphemes? Is she talking another language? No, I am not, these are the technical aspects of language that we need to teach the students from Founda&on – Year 6 to assist them to become highly proficient
readers and spellers.
Just to give you an example of how complex it can be think of the word ‘horse’. In horse you can hear the ‘or’ sound. Simple
enough? So let me add to this, the ‘or’ sound can also be made using the following combina&ons of leLers:Ore as in core, a as in ball, aw as in paw, au as in sauce, oor as in door, oar as in board, ough as in brought, augh as in
caught, our as in your, ar as in war, al as in talk, o as in story, ure as in sure, oa as in broad, ort as in mortgage and aul as
in baulk.
And this is why it can be difficult to spell!! When we are proficient in reading/wri&ng and spelling we are able to associate all
of these leLer combina&ons with the ‘or’ sound, but un&l we give students ‘the code’, they are unable to do so.
We will run some informal informa&on sessions on these two programs for parents this term, so if you want to know more,
make sure you come along.

Week 1, Term 1
This week we are getting back into the swing of school and enjoying hearing the exciting adventures and stories everyone has to share from their holidays. To document these, we are making posters where children can
draw and write about their favourite holiday moments, and making New Year’s Resolutions for the experiences we are excited about this year and goals we want to set.
Quick note from Tessa
It has been wonderful to see all the children again, and hearing all about their amazing holidays! I am very
excited to take on the Coordinator role at Wattleview OSHC program while Manisha is visiting her family in
India. She will be returning on the 27th of February and she is very excited to see all the children again. We will
continue to make children smile and provide a program full of excitement and fun.
PARENTS PLEASE NOTE:
It is of high importance that you cancel your child if they are NOT attending either before or after school care.
If any parents have any ideas of what they would like to see happen in before and after school care,
please drop in for a chat we are always looking for new ideas!
Does your child do any outer school activities? If so, we would love to have some brochures to put in our
community folder to help recruit any other children that are looking for outer school activities!
We’re here to make after school care visits the best experience possible – for you and your child.
If you have any questions about the program – please feel free to drop by, meet the team and see what happens in after school care first hand.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
