A VERY WARM
WELCOME
Welcome to Bradfield Festival, a celebration of culture, creativity and
community in the stunning setting of Bradfield College. The festival
is proud to be a BBC Get Creative champion organisation – one
of a network of over 63,000 arts groups running cultural
events and activities in the UK.
Bradfield Festival brings together the best of music, art, literature, theatre and
dance in an ambitious week of creativity, combining educational workshops
and an extensive outreach programme with world-class professional
performances in the magical setting of Bradfield’s iconic Greek Theatre.
I am very proud to be Artistic Director of this inaugural festival. I hope
your visit inspires you – to go to an
opera, to sing in a choir, to write a
review, to paint, to learn a new craft, to take up a musical instrument,
to dance, to...
After all, education is the business of inspiring people. So go on, Get

Dr Tim Coker, Artistic Director, Bradfield Festival 2015
It is a great pleasure to write a message of
Dr Tim Coker,

Bradfield Festival
support for this inaugural Bradfield Festival
and to wish all the acts, participants, and
theatre goers an inspiring week within the
beautiful College grounds.
The Festival is built upon two key aspects. Firstly a variety of creative daytime
workshops offering pupils from across Berkshire the opportunity to try something
new, be creative and develop those additional skills so important to their future. Secondly
the evening programme of well-known acts, based around the newly restored Greek Theatre,
provides a unique and dramatic venue for performer and audience alike. It is a beautiful setting for

any event and we as a College never forget how lucky we are to have such an inspiring venue on our
doorstep. In welcoming so many acts to the festival I have no doubt that visitors, parents, old Bradfieldians and
pupils will experience something spectacular over the next few days.
I would also like to make special mention of all our supporters, not only the official sponsors and advertisers, without whose generous support this
festival would not be possible, but also to thank the efforts seen and unseen of the whole Bradfield team and community – it has been a huge collective
by all. Thank you for joining us today and I am sure that this inaugural festival will be a memorable week for all concerned.

effort and ensures that the restoration of the Greek Theatre, made possible by generous supporters of the College, is seen and experienced

WHAT IS
GET CREATIVE?
Get Creative is a major celebration of the nation’s arts, culture and creativity. Led
by BBC ARTS and What Next? in collaboration with a huge range of arts, cultural
Supporting
Supporting
and voluntary organisations, everyone is invited to get involved and share their
creative talents.
Hundreds of organisations across the UK including Culture at King’s, Voluntary Arts,
64 Million Artists, Fun Palaces, Cultural Learning Alliance and Arts Council England
are involved.
The campaign aims to highlight the central role that creativity plays in people’s
lives, to celebrate the millions of people who are already doing something creative
and encourage others to take part.
From a graffiti event in Cardiff and an upcycle demo in Belfast to a huge Paint by Numbers scene in Cumbria, the ‘Get Creative’ year opens with a day of
activities across the UK arranged by Voluntary Arts where the public can ‘get creative’ and find out more about local activities in their area, helping enrich
and inspire local communities across the UK.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Arts and creativity are for everyone. But statistics in the Warwick Commission report suggest there are currently underserved demographics in Great
Britain and that there may be a decline in arts participation in schools.
Get Creative is designed to increase access to and participation with the arts. This is important not only for individuals and communities, but it can ultimately
have impact on the creativity of our businesses, the economy and our global reputation as a cultural powerhouse.
OUR FREE
WORKSHOPS
Our workshop programme has over 250 hours of free activities for young people to experience something new – from learning to play the steel drums
to Flamenco dancing, Body Percussion to sculpture, stained glass to learning to DJ on our festival radio station. All of our workshops are completely free
of charge, not only to every single Bradfield pupil, but also to hundreds of children from schools and colleges all over Berkshire – workshops funded by
ticket sales from our public shows, the Old Bradfieldian Society and the generosity of our festival sponsors.
Educational enrichment and outreach are at the heart of the festival. Every day of the festival, Bradfield College pupils will be joining young people from
schools and colleges across the county in workshops with some of the world’s leading artists, musicians, writers and performers.
And many of these world-class visiting artists will actually be performing alongside the students they have been workshopping with in public evening
shows. Unique, once in a lifetime experiences – playing with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, stomping with members of the cast of Stomp,
singing with G4, jamming with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra – litter the festival and help to make this one of the very best educational arts festivals
in the country.

THANK YOU TO
OUR SPONSORS
A THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS
FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
Bradfield Festival’s huge range of cultural and creative opportunities for young
people and the wider community to engage meaningfully with the arts could only
be possible thanks to the generous support from our sponsors.
Our sponsors are investing in the arts at a crucial time, when culture and creativity
is at risk of being driven out of many children’s lives in this country by a narrowing
of the national curriculum with the introduction of the EBacc. At Bradfield we
THE WAY TO GET YOUNG PEOPLE
INVOLVED AND INTERESTED IN
THE THEATRE AND THE ARTS IS
TO PROVIDE EXCITING WORKS
FOR THEM TO SEE.
Dame Judi Dench, Festival Patron.
believe in the transformative power of the arts on young people – to allow them
to become more expressive, confident and imaginative, better communicators,
more sensitive, balanced and, ultimately, happier human beings. Investment in the arts is a serious business. Creative industries contribute almost £77bn to the
economy each year according to the Warwick Commission Report. We need to nurture creative talent in our schools, widening access to the arts not narrowing it.
Our sponsors’ generosity will mean that this week over 800 children from Bradfield and neighbouring schools and colleges will have a chance to try something new
and Get Creative – by stomping with Stomp, playing in an orchestra with the Royal Opera House, making stained glass, dancing Flamenco and much more. And not
only will children have the chance to play, act, sing, dance and make all week but they and thousands of adults alongside them will also have a chance to see worldclass artists perform right here in Bradfield’s famous Greek Theatre. Unique opportunities only made possible by our sponsors’ generous support.Thank you.

ARTS AND CULTURE BEING
‘SYSTEMATICALLY REMOVED
FROM UK EDUCATION SYSTEM’.
The Guardian 17 February 2015
Some of the country’s leading theatre experts come together to discuss the
role theatre plays in modern society in the light of the Warwick Commission
Report on the future of cultural value. If the arts are ‘systematically removed’
from our education systems in a drive for higher standards in literacy and
numeracy, what lies in store for the future of British theatre?

HYPNOTISM WITHOUT
MARTIN TAYLOR
Martin S Taylor is the first and only stage hypnotist not to use a hypnotic trance. In his show Hypnotism Without Hypnosis,
the volunteers stay wide awake and fully aware. Yet they perform all the ingenious and unforgettable routines for
which Martin is famous.
The show starts with a light-hearted lecture about the modern psychology of hypnosis. Combining science with
jokes and anecdotes from his thirty-years’ experience, Martin debunks the notion of a hypnotic trance. Then
volunteers are welcomed on stage, the demonstration starts, and within minutes people are stuck to their chairs,
forget their names, and find they can no longer speak English – all through the power of suggestion.
Martin’s interest in hypnosis was kindled when he worked as a magician back in the 1980s. He gave his first show
to fellow students at Imperial College, to enormous acclaim. (The headline in the student
newspaper was “Lecture Success! Audience Falls Asleep!”) His fame spread, and soon he was
working regularly at schools and universities around the country, including at Bristol where
a young undergraduate named Derren Brown was so impressed he decided then and there
to become a hypnotist himself.
“THE REACTIONS TO MARTIN’S SHOW ARE
OVERWHELMINGLY ONES OF AMAZEMENT
AND FASCINATION: HE’S EASILY THE BEST ON
THE CIRCUIT”
Derren Brown
TUESD
What will happen in tonight’s show? Martin himself doesn’t know – the show entirely depends
on the personalities of the volunteers. One thing is certain, though: at the end of the show, they
will confirm that they weren’t hypnotised, asleep, or in a trance – yet they will have no idea
why they performed such amazing and hysterical antics.

PERMANENT RED PRESENT
“You whose charm is easy and graceful. You for who beauty comes effortlessly.
You in whom hope is placed. You whose skin is without flaw.Welcome...”
Travesty is an intimate, stupid, funny, tender, sad (drag of a) drag show about
patriarchy and privilege. Probably she’ll make a scene. There’ll be some dancing
of sorts. An ugly, punky, beautiful dance around Man’s inhumanity to Woman
– Travesty is the most/least fun you can have with one angry straight hurt
white man, a wig, a guitar and the overwhelming, ever-present, all-defining
oppressive structures of patriarchy. And a boxing glove.
As best we can, let us meet without our weapons
“In a moment I will do a play. Probably it won’t be very nice. But
perhaps it will feel... necessary...”
Alex Swift is a performer, director and theatre-maker. He trained at École Philippe Gaulier in Paris and
his work has won Best Ensemble in the Stage Awards for Acting Excellence, The Bush Theatre Directing

PROGRAMME
INTERVAL
St Louis Blues (Handy arr. Armstrong)
This started life as a double big band piece for NYJO and the German
equivalent, the BuJazzO, which I wrote for our trip to Germany in
September 2014. St Louis Blues by W.C. Handy is one of the pieces that is
often regarded as signalling the birth of jazz, and as it was written in 1914
it seemed a worthy centennial piece of repertoire to play, celebrating 100
years (or so) of our music.
Sub Hub Hubbub (Yarde)
This is a real “concerto for orchestra” for the whole of NYJO and a 2010
commission by the orchestra. Jason features all the sections and a number
of soloists in a piece that combines Afrocentric and Hip-Hop style grooves
and lines with jazz.
JAZZ ORCHESTRA
Dreams (Whiter)
A beautiful original ballad by saxophonist Chris Whiter, featuring flugelhorn.
It is inspired by a classical composition by Russian Composer Yury
Chugunov, from his Suite of Moods for Alto Saxophone and Piano.
Rush Hour (Ferrante arr. Dewhurst)
This is an exciting fusion piece originally written for the Yellowjackets, a
New York based supergroup that included such luminaries as Bob Mintzer,
Robben Ford and Russell Ferrante. The arrangement is by ex-NYJO
trumpeter Nick Dewhurst.
He’s Just My Bill (Nightingale)
Drawn from the song Bill from the musical Showboat, this is an “in-thepocket” Basie-style swinger with Billy May-inspired touches that features the
trombone section.
My Romance (Rodgers/Hart arr. Au)
A timeless American Songbook classic re-imagined by ex-NYJO trombonist
Callum Au as a Bossa Nova, featuring vocalist and flugelhorn solo.
Lullaby of Broadway (Warren/Dubin arr. Armstrong).
Originally from the film The Gold Diggers of 1935 this song is a salute to the
wild nightlife of Jazz Era New York, but with the wine of the song poured
into the more modern swing bottle of my arrangement.
TUESD
AY 23
p18
Mama Badgers (Seigel)
A dark and dangerous modern funk piece by saxophone
supremo Julian Seigel.
Ballad for Loos (Tracey arr. Melling)
From Stan Tracey’s final album this haunting ballad pays tribute to the first
battle of World War 1, in which Stan’s Tommy father was injured. The
arrangement is by Steve Melling, one of NYJO’s first pianists back in the day.
Never The Twain (Wates)
A rip-roaring alto saxophone battle, sometimes preceded by a piano solo
to heat things up. Ding Ding - round one!
No Pau de Acucar (Dawson)
By current NYJO trombonist Owen Dawson this translates as “On
Sugarloaf Mountain”, referring to the landmark in Rio de Janeiro. This is an
impressionistic Bossa Nova
Finding My Feet (Ashton arr. Hart)
Bill Ashton’s legacy of songs for the band is celebrated here in a fresh
arrangement by Paul Hart
What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?
(Legrand/Bergman/Bergman arr. Armstrong)
A beautiful song from the film Les Parapluies de Cherbourg with English lyrics
by the husband-and-wife team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman. The film blends
the optimism of young love with the reality of French society and along with
the (very French) desperate romantic sadness has the most extraordinary
score by Michel Legrand.
Going Dutch (Smith)
Round 2: this time for the tenor saxophones to slug it out in Chris Smith’s
punningly-titled piece, based on the chord sequence for jazz standard Just
Friends by John Klenner and Sam Lewis. If fast-paced bebop is your food of
choice by the time you split the bill you are sure to be satisfied!

MARK
ARMSTRONG
Mark Armstrong was born in
Newcastle-Upon-Tyne but brought up
in Amersham where he attended Dr Challoner’s Grammar School. He took a
degree in Music at Oxford University and attended the postgraduate course in jazz and
studio music at the Guildhall School of Music, gaining an LGSM in Jazz.
Mark’s playing career has included a wide variety of styles and genres. He was a
member of Clark Tracey’s Quintet for seven years, recording two albums, The
Calling (2003) and The Mighty Sas (2006) and played regularly with Clark’s
father Stan Tracey, recording with Stan on his final quintet album The
Flying Pig (2013) and with Stan’s big band live from the 2006 Appleby
jazz festival as well as performing with the big band at the 2009 BBC
Proms. Mark’s work as a sideman has also seen him playing Latin Jazz
with Robin Jones’s Sextet, Mainstream and traditional jazz with the
Pasadena Roof Orchestra and bebop with Peter Long’s Gillespiana in
which the Times’s Alyn Shipton described his playing as “pirouetting
through Gillespie’s breaks quicker than a hummingbird’s wings” and
John Fordham of the Guardian described him as “the solo star of
the outfit”. Mark was nominated in the best trumpet category of the
2007 Ronnie Scott Jazz Awards. Mark still performs regularly as a jazz
trumpet player: as a member of the Ronnie Scott Jazz Orchestra and in
his own quartet, which released the Album Coastbound in 2010. Recent
projects include a tribute to Stan Tracey at the 2014 Brecon Jazz Festival.

ART IN SOCIETY
SAM JONES, THE TATE
Tate Galleries’ Head of Director’s Office, Samuel Jones’ primary interests are culture, the arts and international
and intercultural communication and he has written widely on the subject of cultural literacy and the
importance of creativity and visual development in young people’s education. Today, Sam talks to
us about the significant role art has to play in education and society as a whole.
This is a timely opportunity to consider the value of the arts - when educational
policy threatens to remove the arts entirely from the curriculum and the lives of a
generation of children in schools up and down the country.
Sam is Head of the Director’s Office at Tate and supports the Director and Deputy
Director on corporate governance, strategy and policy across the organisation. He is
also responsible for Tate’s relationship with Trustees and public sector bodies.
Prior to this, he was a policy fellow at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport,
and spent five years at the thinktank Demos where he published work on culture
and international relations, conservation and heritage, cultural management and
conversation in the public realm.

FONTANELLA
Since its formation in 2001, the ensemble Fontanella has performed for
festivals, music clubs and radio and television networks across Britain and
Europe including appearances in Italy, Iceland and Finland. In 2012 the
ensemble appeared in an episode of the BBC’s flagship music show for
children, ZingZillas, which has since been repeated many times both in the
UK and across the world. In 2013 the ensemble also had the privilege for
performing live for Dame Judi Dench in concert at the Ardingly ArtsFest and
will later this year be releasing a new album of renaissance recorder music,

REVISIONING SHAKESPEARE
THE REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY ®
Shakespeare PhD student and English teacher Alix Scott-Martin
invites us to look at Shakespeare with fresh eyes through the
ground-breaking work of one of the world’s most influential
Shakespearean Theatre Companies.
The Reduced Shakespeare Company is a three-man comedy troupe that
takes long, serious subjects and reduces them to short, sharp comedies.
Of course, we have heard this all before. In fact, we are told repeatedly how very
good Shakespeare’s plays are, and there’s the rub. There is a very real danger that our
experiences of these great works in the classroom can make us feel stupid rather than
intellectually stimulated. Written in an intimidating language we no longer speak, plays such
as Timon of Athens, Troilus and Cressida and The Tempest can seem impenetrable on the
page.
The Reduced Shakespeare Company has an important role here and not just as London’s
longest running comedy. By revisioning The Histories as a game of American football, Othello
as a rap and Titus Andronicus as a cookery programme, by knocking Shakespeare off his
high culture pedestal and making us laugh, this trio of actors succeed in bringing the bard
to the appealing realm of popular culture. We can learn a great deal from their irreverent
take on these 37 plays – characteristics shared by the Comedies, the key elements of
plot, gory details from the Tragedies. Yet most importantly, the pace and energy of their
performance reminds us that these plays were not written for readers, but for the stage.
If you have enjoyed The Reduced Shakespeare Company at this year’s Bradfield Festival, we
hope you are now inspired to book yourself tickets for a full-length production. Try
Raz Shaw’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Bodleian Library Quad, Iqbal Khan’s Othello
in Stratford-Upon-Avon or Kenneth Branagh’s Romeo and Juliet
at The Garrick Theatre...
The company’s first three shows, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
(abridged), The Complete History of America (abridged) and The Bible: The
Complete Word of God (abridged) enjoyed a nine-year run at the Criterion
Theatre in Piccadilly Circus during the nineties and noughties. Not only were
they London’s longest-running comedies, but at one point the Reduced
Shakespeare Company had more shows running in the West End than
Andrew Lloyd Webber. Some of them were funnier too...
The company have just completed a critically acclaimed season at the
Edinburgh Fringe 2014 with The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) and
were last seen on a four month tour of the UK and Ireland with The Bible:
The Complete Word of God (abridged) at the start of 2014. Before that a
whirlwind, eight month tour of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
(abridged) played to packed houses throughout the UK and London’s West
End throughout 2013. Prior to this the “other RSC” were last seen in the UK
with their highly successful Complete World of Sports (abridged), which toured
the country before completing a season in London’s West End during the
2012 Olympics.

Next year, it will be 400 years since our national playwright died and yet his plays still
resonate across the centuries. The vast emotional, social and spatial range of Shakespeare’s
works provide a rewarding challenge for students and audiences alike and the insight these
plays offer into the human condition is astonishing.
Since 1981, ‘The Bad Boys of Abridgement’ have created nine stage shows,

which have been performed, seen, heard and translated into Klingon the

Since 2005, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups and sketch acts
from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children (aged 6+) and
their families… but without the rude bits! A decade later, the company has expanded
from one London residency to being countrywide, running shows and workshops all
over the UK from Peebles to Portsmouth, even producing a book on how to write and
perform stand-up.The show is family friendly, but without any patronising idiocy. In fact, it’s
just like a normal comedy club, but it’s on in the day, kids are allowed in, and thus there is
a higher than usual chance of heckles like “why is that your face!?”
The show will be hosted by Tiernan Douieb, described by The Scotsman as “a perennial
contender for the title of most affable person in comedy”’:

LOST
Lost explores the limits of what it is to be both physically and emotionally lost. The
visceral and thought-provoking choreography of this male-female duet combines
Motionhouse’s characteristic contact work, complex lifts and athletic precision
with emotionally charged fluidity. Sensual connection between the two dancers is
fused with raw emotion as one desperately fights to pull the other back from the
precipice. The breath-taking lifts and instinctive quality of the dance make Lost an
intimate, dramatic and passionate work.
Dancers: Ariadna Gironès Mata and Daniel Connor
Founded in 1988, Motionhouse tours to theatres and festivals at home and across
the globe. The company’s trademark style integrates elements of circus and
acrobatics with contact choreography and breath-taking dance, producing shows of
outstanding quality that are exciting, accessible and enjoyable for all.
Motionhouse’s Artistic Director Kevin Finnan MBE was Choreographer and
Movement Director for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic
Games. His questioning of the traditional use of space has led to the creation of
extraordinary dance spectacles including the acclaimed Machine Dance for JCB
diggers and dancers, site-based performances at heritage sites, on beaches and in
disused buildings, and outdoor shows that tour the UK and Europe.
Motionhouse also runs a wide-ranging education and participatory programme.
Perfect (2005/6) is a set piece on the GCSE Dance curriculum in England and Wales
and Driven (2007/08) is on the A Level Performance Studies syllabus. Motionhouse
offers workshops to support students and teachers in their study of both shows.
MEMORIES OF SUBURBIA
WILL DICKIE
“In the last years of her life Nan and I spoke about our home, Hampton - a town in
deepest suburbia. She said people move here to start a family or meet their maker.
I imagine this setting as a threshold. At night I danced in the shadows cast by
Hampton’s well organised street lights, searching for something beneath the suburb’s
comfort and shelter.
As I drifted outside Nan was indoors, drifting through the thoughts and feelings of her
inner space. This work weaves those two movements together, invoking Hampton’s
quiet mood and channeling the emotions found there.”
Will Dickie is an artist who uses his experience of theatre, dance and live art to
create his own performances. He uses martial arts and meditative practices as his
creative tools, devising experiences from the sensations of the body, the space and
the present moment. For the last 3 years his solo work has been travelling around the
UK, including the Latitude, In Between Time and Buzzcut Festivals.

ROCK CHOIR
Rock Choir is the UK’s largest and most popular
contemporary choir, with more than 17,000
members in over 300 local communities
nationwide. It offers adults and teenagers the
chance to sing and perform popular contemporary
songs, with no auditions and no requirements to
read music or have any previous singing experience.
Rock Choir’s popularity is phenomenal and its
achievements are extraordinary. It’s released two
top twenty albums and performed en-masse at the
02 Arena, London and The Liverpool Echo Arena,
Wembley Arena, Hammersmith Apollo and the
Royal Albert Hall. In 2011 Rock Choir was the subject of popular 3-part ITV1 documentary ‘The
Choir That Rocks’, and has made numerous other TV appearances, including BBC Breakfast,The
One Show,The Paul O’Grady Show and The Alan Titchmarsh Show. Rock Choir are currently
celebrating their 10th Anniversary year and will be holding a special event at the Genting Arena
at the NEC, Birmingham in June 2015.
Rock Choir was started in Farnham, Surrey in 2005 by musician and singer, Caroline Redman
Lusher, pioneering the contemporary choir movement in the UK. Rock Choir’s uplifting ethos
of fun, friendship and community spirit is a huge part of its attraction. At an individual level, it
helps improve people’s self-confidence, enables them to develop new singing skills, and enjoy a
dynamic new social life. Singing together and achieving such a great sound gives members a huge
sense of fulfilment. Added to this is the glamour and excitement of performing in public, which
for many is a truly liberating experience.
GIVING
SOMETHING
BACK
Since its very beginning, Rock Choir has helped raise over £1.5
million for local and National charities. In March 2012, thousands
of Rock Choir members across the UK raised thousands of pounds
by carrying out a series of Flash-Mobs and performances in aid of
Sport Relief. In June, almost 8,000 members and their families and
friends gave a synchronised UK-wide performance of the Bryan Adams
hit ‘When You’re Gone’ winning its 3rd Guinness World Record ‘The
Largest Song and Dance Routine held at Multiple Locations’. The
event raised thousands of pounds for Refuge. In 2013, Rock Choir
held a similar National event this time for Comic Relief where each
choir ‘dared’ a local celebrity to sing solo with the choir. Hundreds
of celebrities and local VIPs accepted the challenge and over £30,000
was raised.
In 2012, Rock Choir Founder and Director, Caroline Redman Lusher
was honoured for her ‘exceptional contribution to British Music’ by
BASCA and the PRS who awarded her the coveted music industry
Gold Badge Award. She shred this honour with other individuals who
also received the Gold Badge that day such as Sir George Martin,
Paul Carrack and Nick Mason. The PRS Chairman, Guy Fletcher
said, “Caroline has created a cultural musical movement in this
country with Rock Choir. Her story is inspirational!” Caroline was
also appointed Ambassador for charity, Missing People by Sir Trevor
Macdonald.

G4 are excited to be headlining Bradfield Festival, following the huge
success of their Reunion Tour, inspired by the overwhelming response
to their One Night Only reunion concert at London’s Barbican Centre on
November 17th 2014.
G4 set an exciting trend by bringing classical music to British reality TV
screens for the first time in 2004 with their performance of Nessun Dorma.
However, it was their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody that became their
signature tune, storming the charts in 2005. Their eponymous debut album
went straight to No.1, selling more than 245,000 in the first week, making
it the fastest-selling album of the year.
G4 subsequently released three albums, selling over 2 million copies
in the UK. They also released a Live at The Royal Albert Hall DVD, an
autobiographical book G4: Our Way and completed five sell-out tours
across the UK and Ireland, including a Cathedral Tour where they sang
acoustically. Other G4 highlights included collaborating with Lesley Garrett,
Robin Gibb, Stephen Gately and Sir Cliff Richard, performing in the The
Royal Albert Hall more than a dozen times, and having the roller-coaster
ride G-Force named after them, which they opened at Drayton Manor
Theme Park. In 2007, after three albums, over 2 million album sales and
five sell-out tours with performances in many of the UK’s iconic venues,
the band decided to disband to follow individual interests.

Frontman Jonathan Ansell says, “You can expect the classic G4 treatment:
lots of classic songs given the traditional G4 twist, and there’ll definitely be
a surprise or two along the way!”.
Experience G4’s trademark sound: expect to hear the tunes that helped
make them famous, such as My Way, Nessun Dorma and Bohemian Rhapsody,
alongside some fresh takes on music of more recent years. It’s sure to be
an evening to live long in the memory: not to be missed!
Future plans for G4 include; 14 UK concert dates in September as part

A HISTORY OF THE
GREEK THEATRE
It was in 1882 that the first Greek play, Alcestis, was performed in classical Greek at Bradfield. This
production took place in the College’s Dining Hall and it was not until 1888 that Dr Herbert Gray,
the Headmaster and inspiration behind the play, decided to transform a disused chalk pit in the
school grounds into a replica of a Greek theatre.
With the help of pupils, and later of professional workmen, he cut ten tiers of seats
into the solid chalk, and shaped an orchestra on the model of that at Epidaurus. In
1897 the number of tiers was further increased to its current size.
The first play in the current setting, Antigone, was performed in 1890.
Thereafter, plays were performed triennially (except during the two
World Wars) and were selected from the classical repertoire of works
by the three great tragedians: Sophocles, Aeschylus and Euripides.
Shakespearean productions were added in 1932.
With the advent of girls within the College in the late 1980s, this
repertoire was further extended to include a wider range of Greek
plays and musical productions. Over the years the fame of the
Bradfield Greek Play has spread far and wide. Prime ministers, poets,
generals, archbishops, writers and actors, have all supported this
unique event. T S Eliot, Sybil Thorndyke, Agatha Christie, Lord Asquith,
Field Marshal Lord Montgomery, Sir Peter Hall and Enoch Powell were
all faithful pilgrims.
Despite regular maintenance, in 2009 modern safety and access
requirements dictated the closure of the Theatre. In May 2011 the Trustees
of the Bradfield Foundation launched a campaign to restore the Theatre. The
appeal was met with an overwhelming response from Old Bradfieldians, members
of staff, current and past parents of the college, pupils and members of the public
which enabled the restoration and rebuilding of the Theatre which exists today.
Such rebuilding gave important opportunity to review purpose and ensure relevance to the
needs of the future. The modern Theatre incorporates refurbished tiered seating, an extended
stage and a skene which can be adapted to accommodate scenery for Greek, Shakespearean and
musical productions as well as making it possible to accommodate world-class acts such as those hosted
by the Bradfield Festival.
A Gala was held in May 2014 to mark the reopening of the Theatre and to celebrate the £1.2m face-lift, featuring a star-studded
variety performance hosted by former pupils Mark Nicholas (G 71-76), Claudia Harrison (I 92-94) and Jonny Saunders (F 88-93). A full house enjoyed
performances by a mixture of current and past pupils, including Downton Abbey’s Andrew Alexander, jazz guitar maestro John Etheridge and VOCES8.
In June 2014 the College returned to the triennial Greek play tradition staging Sophocles’ Antigone, performed in Ancient Greek and watched by

Singers, Culture Mix, Inspire Works, Reading University, Readipop, the RPO, Southern Sinfonia and
many more. It is these strong connections which provide our young people with the unique and
exciting opportunities to work with groups and individuals at the very top of the profession. The
work done within this partnership is vital, providing opportunities across genres, ages and abilities
which allows for an inclusive music experience for all. www.berkshiremaestros.org.uk
